Is the Grass Greener?
Constributed by Doug Weaver, Director of Golf Instruction

Few of us pay attention to the grass we’re playing on, but we should. In the South, you’re likely to encounter Bermuda grass, which is thicker and more apt to grab and twist your club if contact is made early en route to the ball. In northern regions, grass is typically softer and more yielding, and therefore more forgiving. This contrast perplexes players after hammering one straight drive after another off practice range mats, only to hit one errant shot after another once they step onto the course. A better approach is to hit your practice shots off the grass when at the range. It’s like driving a car in various weather conditions. It pays to be sensitive to changes in course conditions.

Golf at Palmetto Dunes
Please Meet: Sammy Mulrain
Contributed by Clark Sinclair, Head Professional, Arthur Hills Golf Course

At 94, Sammy Mulrain has been working at Palmetto Dunes for nearly 30 years, working every Thursday as a starter. With an impeccable work ethic, he has never arrived late or missed one of his shifts for three decades. Sammy’s friendly demeanor, detail-oriented personality and generous spirit keep him involved with many different fundraisers and charitable events around Hilton Head Island. He even makes it a habit to search for lost golf balls on his own time, donating them to a local church for their use in fundraising events. Honored as the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association’s 2009 Employee of the Year, Sammy is truly an inspiration to everyone who knows him. Stop by and say hello to Sammy the next time you’re teeing off at Palmetto Dunes!
