6 Great Spring Break Activities for Kids on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head spring break

We finally made it to spring break! Say goodbye to the bad winter weather and hello to warm sunny South Carolina skies. If you’re headed down our way for spring break, we’ve got some great suggestions for kids to enjoy here at the resort. From golf to swimming to fishing and more, there’s no time for video games or for getting bored here on Hilton Head Island.

Here’s our list of top spring break activities for kids on the island:

1)      Swim -- What child doesn’t love to jump in the water and splash away? We figure that’s probably the first thing they’re going to want to do when they arrive, so we put it first on the list. Depending on the weather, if the ocean waters are a little too cool yet, hit the pool at your Hilton Head vacation rental, some of which are heated, and should be plenty warm in the sun.

2)      Ride a bike – Our next suggestion that kids will love is riding their bike. We’re sure they’re already used to it at home and now they’ve got an entirely new area to explore. We recently replaced most of our bike paths, which number 5 miles within the resort alone. Instead of driving your car, ride your bike to the beach, to lunch, to golf, you name it! Get your Hilton Head bike rentals and all the gear you need at Hilton Head Outfitters.

3)      Learn a new skill – Palmetto Dunes offers wonderful junior programs for both golf and tennis. Not only will kids and teens stay active and keep their minds firing, they’ll come home from Hilton Head Island proud to show their friends what they’ve learned. Watch these fun videos about our Little Swingers golf class and junior tennis clinics.

4)      Explore nature – Nature is all around you on Hilton Head Island from the moss-draped live oak trees and colorful azaleas to shore birds and plentiful fish. Rent double kayaks and put an adult with each child for a peaceful kayak through our calm 11-mile lagoon system. See who can spot the most birds!

5)      Reel in a big one – We have lots of great fishing around Palmetto Dunes, including our fair share of “monster” fish. Take a Hilton Head fishing charter on our lagoon and see if you can reel in Elvis, the giant red fish, or head out into the ocean for some exciting shark fishing for the whole family.

6)      Go crabbing – This one may surprise you, but crabbing in Hilton Head is one of our favorite activities for families because everyone can get involved. Our charter, the Crabber J, teaches you how to catch a crab and then awards their world-famous Crabber J T-shirt to the person who catches the most!

What do you think your kids will enjoy the most on their Hilton Head Island spring break?

Dunes House Oceanfront Hilton Head Restaurant Open for the Spring and Summer Season

Oceanfront restaurant Hilton Head Island

As we finally – and gratefully – wave goodbye to the weather we all experienced this winter, it’s time to welcome back to the fold our Dunes House restaurant, which is now open (weather permitting) for lunch and dinner for guests of the resort and Palmetto Dunes homeowners.

If you’ve never been to this classic establishment, it’s an absolute must-do when you stay with us here at Palmetto Dunes. Our favorite way to arrive at the Dunes House is by bike (get your Hilton Head bike rentals from our own Hilton Head Outfitters) fresh from a tennis match, a swim at the beach, a round of golf or a kayak through the lagoon. You can also catch the free Dunes Buggy shuttle during the summer months.

Head on in and grab a seat at one of our outdoor tables, all of which come with an oceanfront view, for a quick lunch or dinner until you’re off to your next resort activity. On the menu, you’ll find our specialty fish tacos, as well as peel ‘n eat shrimp, salads, hamburgers and hotdogs, sandwiches, wraps and more. Kids can choose from PB&J, mini cheeseburgers, grilled cheese or turkey sandwiches. The Dunes House also offers a range of drinks from beer and wine to sodas and frozen drinks.

Beginning April 1, live music will be back at the Dunes House on select evenings, including all Mondays and Wednesdays in April. Visit our monthly calendar to see when live music is scheduled.

Keep in mind the Dunes House is open weather permitting, so on those rare stormy days, head instead to Big Jim’s BBQ, Burgers & Pizza over at the Robert Trent Jones golf course. They also close occasionally for private events, like weddings. So be sure to check our website for the monthly calendar before you stop by for a visit.

Did you know you can always visit the Dunes House even though you’re not on Hilton Head Island? Just click on our Dunes House webcam to get your beach fix anytime!

We’re holding a table for you here at the Dunes House Hilton Head restaurant, so stop by and visit us next time you’re on the island. If we can help you with accommodations or other resort activities, just give us a call at 866-744-7558.

Shelter Cove Marina’s Harbourmaster Dave Harris Retires After 30 Years

Shelter Cove MarinaNo one knows Shelter Cove Marina like Dave Harris. When he started working at Shelter Cove Harbour in 1983, it was just an idea in progress. By the time it opened to the public in June of that year, Dave found himself overseeing the marina itself, which at the time was just 5 docks, and later its retail operations and charter tours. Now, more than 30 years later, after watching Shelter Harbour grow into a popular shopping, dining, boating and entertainment destination year round, he’s decided to retire, handing over the reins to Captain Kyle MacDaniel at the end of March.

Affectionately known as Harbourmaster Dave around Shelter Cove, he’s the leader of all operations out of the marina. His fondest memories of his time at Shelter Cove are the people, both those he works with and those who come in and out of the marina every day. “We’ve had some real characters come here throughout the years,” says Harris, also remembering fondly the regulars who dock at the marina every year whom he’s gotten to know over the years.

He’s also indebted to his staff, including his two managers, a married couple,  Pam and Tommy Perkins, who’ve worked for him for 20 years. “I’ve been very fortunate with the people I’ve had working with me,” he says. “It’s really gotten to be a family operation and they are wonderful folks to be around. Between Pam and Tommy, all I have to do is pick up the trash and make the coffee.”

He says his favorite times of year are probably spring and fall at the marina. “The weather is just beautiful,” he says. “To step out there in the morning, it’s dead calm and you can see the boats reflected in the water. If you have to go to work, that’s a good setting to go to work in.” He also says he loves how the whole island hums in the summertime.

Before taking the job at Shelter Cove, Dave was in the Marine Corps, and afterward, he and his wife spent four years sailing around the world together before starting their family. While he says he’s not planning to sail the world again in retirement, he does plan to spend some time in his home state of Wyoming where he has a cabin. “I’ll be shaking the salty sea air off and getting some of that mountain crispness,” he says, but there are no plans to stop working. Says Harris, “I may become a brain surgeon or a fry cook, not sure which I’d be better at.”

Those of us here at Palmetto Dune and Shelter Cove are so grateful for Dave’s years of service to our company, literally helping build it from the ground up, and we’ll miss seeing his friendly smiling face over at the marina. Hopefully, that sea air will call him back for a regular visit!

Be sure to also read this recent article by David Lauderdale in the Hilton Head Island Packet recounting Dave’s years with us.

Player ‘Lobbers’ from Brian Kiggans, Head Tennis Professional at Palmetto Dunes

Brian KiggansWhen playing a doubles opponent who often lobs the ball, it can be frustrating due to minimal offensive threats and impatience might cause unforced errors. Many times the losing team does not have a good enough offense to overcome the defensive “lobbers.”

There are some tactics to try if you run up against these types of teams. When you get an overhead, don’t try to pound it through them. Attempt softer, shorter angles to move them out of position and force them react to the different pace of the ball. Make sure you are playing overheads when balls are high and volleys if they are low. Too many teams attempt overheads when the ball is not high and they should be playing a volley, which is more accurate.

Not every overhead is meant to be a put away. Mix in a variety of angles and spin. Missed overheads are the number one reason people lose to teams that lob well. Use a drop shot to return a serve or on shorter shots. Hitting deep, powerful shots feeds the frenzy of more lobs. When you do get a volley, try to use more drop or touch around the net, when possible. Hard, firm volleys invite a better lob.

Whenever possible, play to the weaker player or lobber which will frustrate the stronger team member. Try playing your team’s best overhead player, if right-handed, in the ad court or, if lefty, in the deuce court. Anything up the middle will play into that player’s smash return.

>When serving, move your partner further from the net to take away the lob return. Lobbing teams love to do so off the serve. You may choose to play a designed poach off the serve so the server is already covering for their partner, if the return of serve lob is causing problems.

Lastly, don’t take it for granted you are a superior team. These teams are tough to beat. Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves to end points quickly.

In summary:

  • Don’t beat yourself by giving away free points. Remember this team has little offense and relies on your errors to win.
  • Remember hitting the ball hard feels great but usually will bring on a better lob from your opponent. Lobbers love pace so use softer shots whenever possible. You have to “dink-and-dunk” the lobbers.
  • Never underestimate lobbing teams. Respect their abilities so that you don’t put too much pressure on yourselves.
