The Golf Bike is Coming to Hilton Head Island

      golf bike

We’ve got an exciting new “green” way to get around all three of our Hilton Head golf courses this spring: the golf bike! Our staff just returned from the PGA Golf Show in Orlando in February where they got a firsthand look at the bike, which will be available at Palmetto Dunes in 2015.

The golf bike is a bike specially designed to be used on the golf course with minimal impact to the course (in fact, less impact than a cart). It’s has a “step through” frame to make it easy to get on and off quickly and has places to hold 12 clubs, along with some supplies. The club holder is integrated into the frame so it’s not difficult to balance the bike and the “Turfstand” makes sure your bike stands up wherever it is -- fairway, rough or cart path. The golf bike also features a gel seat and riser handlebar that puts the rider in an upright and natural position for maximum comfort.

When it comes to course etiquette when using this cool new golf bike, just as on carts, stay on the cart paths when possible and enter the fairways at 90 degrees. Don’t ride up onto greens or on the tee boxes.

If you play a round using a golf bike, it averages about an hour and 15 minutes to complete 9 holes, much faster than walking and with the best fitness benefits. Of course, you can enjoy a more relaxed pace of play or ride your bike even faster if you desire.

Who wants to rent a golf bike on their spring round of golf at Palmetto Dunes?! We’re excited to get these new items in and hope you are too!

      See you on the greens!

To book your Hilton Head tee time at Palmetto Dunes, visit www.palmettodunes.com or call 866-650-4130 and remember, you save when you book multiple rounds!

10 Places to Kiss at Hilton Head Island’s Palmetto Dunes

Best Places to Kiss on Hilton Head

While any beach is romantic, we think there’s something extra special here on the South Carolina coast of Hilton Head Island when it comes to lighting a spark, especially here within our beautiful beach resort. We’ve collected our top 10 places to steal a smooch on your next visit to Palmetto Dunes:

      1. Robert Trent Jones Course No. 10 - With its fantastic ocean views this is a great place to pucker up, especially if you or your sweetheart beat par! This gorgeous spot is also a popular location to get engaged and say I do!

      2. Neptune Statue - An iconic landmark on Hilton Head Island, we highly recommend getting a selfie of the pair of you in a liplock while this famous figurative sundial stands in the background.

      3. In a canoe - Head out on our peaceful 11-mile inland lagoon system for some precious alone time together by renting a canoe from Hilton Head Outfitters. Marvel at the natural beauty of the lowcountry and lean in for a kiss just when it couldn’t get any quieter.

      4. On a sunset dinner cruise - Hop aboard a romantic Hilton Head sunset dinner cruise leaving from Shelter Cove Harbour and enjoy a gourmet meal as the sun sets over the marsh. That’s sure to start some loving feelings!

      5. Ocean view villa - Rent one of our Hilton Head ocean view villas and prepare a romantic dinner for two (Dunes Catering can assist if you need a little help in this department). Then step out on to the balcony as the winds sweeps through your hair to make your move!

      6. At the beach - It’s tough to beat kissing at the beach with the sound of the ocean waves crashing in the background. Kick off your shoes and head for a barefoot walk down our 3-mile stretch of beach. Why not make it a game and kiss every time you see a dolphin?! Collect some shells as mementos of your romantic vacation.

      7. On the tennis court - Why not show your “love” during a tennis match? We recommend leaning in over the net at one of our 26 Hilton Head tennis courts. Try a night game with our lighted courts to kick up the romance level.

      8. Over dinner at the Dunes House - Is there a more romantic place to dine than overlooking the beach? Share a shrimp cocktail, some fish tacos and cheer your relationship over some frozen drinks.

      9. Dinner with a harbour view - Second only to the beach in romantic dinner options is a view of the harbour at Shelter Cove. Choose from several gourmet restaurants with a water view at Shelter Cove Harbour like ELA’s Blu Water Grille and Bistro 17.

      10. On a bike for two - Get some fresh air with your amour by renting a tandem bike from Hilton Head Outfitters. You’ll have to work together as you pedal throughout the resort as you cruise beneath palm trees and sweeping live oaks with hanging moss.

Have you stolen a smooch on the island? Got any secret spots?

To plan a romantic getaway to Hilton Head Island, consider our romance packages that combine accommodations, activities and spa services. Want to customize a vacation just for you and your sweetheart? Give us a call at 866-650-4130 and we’ll get it all set up!

Celebrate the Super Bowl at Palmetto Dunes

The teams are set -- it’s the amazing comeback Seattle Seahawks versus the perennial favorite New England Patriots for Super Bowl XLIX Feb 1. Here at Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island, we’ve got some fun activities you can enjoy before, during and after the Big Game.

      Super Bowl Golf Tournament

Before the Big Game, kill some time by joining our Super Bowl Golf Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones course Feb.1, the morning of the game, at 9 a.m. It will be a shotgun start and four-person team scramble format. The cost to play is $45 per person of $180 per team, and your registration includes not only the tournament, but beer and snacks, as well to get your day off to a “super” start. Sign up to play.

Game Day Specials at Big Jim’s Restaurant

After you’ve ideally won the Super Bowl golf tournament, head direct to the restaurant on the course, Big Jim’s, where we’ll be serving game day specials and have our eight big screen TVs tuned to all things NFL football. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet for $12.99 per person and drink specials like $15 domestic buckets and 2 for 1 craft beers.

      Score a Golf Deal

Whether your team wins or loses, you’ll still “score” a deal the day after the Super Bowl with our golf special. Book your tee time and pay only the winning team’s score on Feb. 2 at the George Fazio course. Here’s hoping it’s a low scoring game :). Mention “Super Bowl Score Special” when booking your Hilton Head tee time at 843-785-1138.

Have a great Super Bowl! For more information about a Hilton Head weekend getaway to enjoy the Super Bowl on the island, visit www.palmettodunes.com.

      • Can you please give me some tips to eliminate a slice off the tee? Watch answer

Featured Hilton Head Golf Course Hole: Robert Trent Jones Number 11

While the sweeping views and tricky ocean breezes of the 10th hole at the Palmetto Dunes’ Robert Trent Jones golf course may get all the attention, the 11th hole is challenging, as well. Part of the resort’s oceanfront Hilton Head golf course, named the 2003 South Carolina golf course of the year, hole 11 is a par 4 that plays 405 yards from the gold tees.

Watch out for the lagoons and sand bunkers to the left and right of this hole, which generally plays downwind. The tee shot needs to be straight, as any approach that slides to the right will most likely find the lagoon, which sits just off to the side.

Need some tips for playing over water? Doug Weaver, our director of golf instruction, says to focus not on lifting the ball over the water but on clipping the tee. Watch:

Says Weaver, “Golf is a game of opposites; when you swing down, the ball goes up.”

Watch the flyover of the Jones 11th hole and of all the holes on our Robert Trent Jones golf course map and be sure to download a scorecard and our free Palmetto Dunes golf app for more tips on the go!

To reserve your Hilton Head golf tee time, visit www.palmettodunes.com where you can save 30% by reserving online in advance. You can also save with multi-rounds of golf starting at just $76 per round in November and $59 per round December through February. Call us at 866-650-4130 for more details.

Play Golf like Rory McIlroy at Hilton Head’s Palmetto Dunes

Everyone’s talking about Rory McIlroy right now with his big win at the British Open. He even got the coveted Sports Illustrated cover, which is rare for any golfer other than Tiger Woods. Here at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, we like to teach golfers how to improve their game and love to take a look at some of the pros’ best techniques.

According to our Director of Golf Instruction Doug Weaver, Rory McIlroy is known for his rotating swing. When you look at the completion of his swing, his right shoulder is over the left leg and past the left shoulder rather than stopping the rotation.

How can you learn that technique? Weaver suggests naturally tossing a ball toward to the left of the target line almost at a right angle to get the feel of it. He says it translates into better compression of the ball, which you’ll hit clean and far. Watch this video of Weaver demonstrating:

In a recent article, Golf Digest also noted McIlroy’s outstanding putting at the British Open where he made 20 birdies and two eagles and one-putted 34 out of 72 greens. The article notes that his putting coach Dave Stockton teaches players to “begin to set their stance while looking out at the line -- not at the ball.” At the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, we offer eight hours of putting instruction every week to help you work on that aspect of your game.

The Daily Mail’s Tony Jacklin says, “Rory’s technique is fabulous, showing that golf is nothing to do with size but all about speed and balance and rhythm and skill. It’s magical to watch.”

Weaver offers some tips for putting like McIlroy in this video filmed at the oceanfront 10th hole at the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes:

Of course, if you want to be like Rory, it doesn’t hurt to use Nike clubs and wear Nike apparel, too. ThePalmetto Dunes golf pro shop at the Robert Trent Jones golf course is one of only six Nike Golf TTC Concept shops across the U.S. where you can find plenty of Nike gear.

If you want to learn to play like Rory, look no farther than the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. Call us at 866-650-4130 to schedule your private lesson today!

Get your Golf on at Hilton Head Golf Tournament at Palmetto Dunes Courses this July

Do you get competitive when it comes to golf? We’ve got just the event for you: our 1st annual Palmetto Dunes Summer Golf Series.

The tournament will run three Saturdays in July, one Saturday at each course, with prizes and bragging rights at stake.

The format will be a shotgun start with a four-man team scramble and team handicap at 20%. The first two tournaments are independent of the championship, and the top two teams from each of the first two tournaments will be re-handicapped based on their scores.

The top two teams will be competing for the Series Grand Championship at the Robert Trent Jones golf course where six teams will be playing to be the grand champions. The rest of the teams will be competing as they did in the first two events at the Arthur Hills golf course and the George Fazio golf course.

Prizes, which will be awarded for low net, closest to the pin and long drive, will include resort gift cards, golf certificates, hotel nights, restaurant discounts and more. The grand prize winners will receive individual and team trophies and custom shirts with the series logo and 2014 champion embroidered on them.

The tournaments start at 9 a.m. on July 12 at Arthur Hills, July 19 at George Fazio and July 26 at Robert Trent Jones. Entry fees are $65 per player or $260 per team and $85 per player or $340 per team for the Jones championship.

Three Hilton Head Golf Courses, Three Varied Experiences

One of the best things about Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is the opportunity for golfers to experience three 18-hole championship Hilton Head golf courses all at one resort with first tees no more than 5 minutes apart. Designers Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio and Arthur Hills all have established golf courses at our resort and each offers a unique playing experience for the golf lover.

      Robert Trent Jones Golf Course

The Jones course is perhaps best known for its oceanfront setting with one of only two oceanfront holes on the entire island. Its layout is immaculate and stunning in its beauty and the view from the famed 10th green is not one that will soon be forgotten (we’ve even had weddings there!). Jones plays away from the clubhouse until it reaches its famed back-to-back par-5s that play out to the ocean. It’s also known to have the most accommodating fairways of the trio of courses, though keep in mind you might lose a ball or two as the course winds its way over the resort’s inland lagoon system.

      George Fazio Golf Course

We hear a lot that the Fazio course is the most challenging of our courses. It offers the island’s only par-70 layout, whose long par-4s, elevated greens and deep bunkers will test all facets of your game. Known as a great course for “faders” of the golf ball, the Fazio course features a unique double green at 11 and 16 that gives you a peek at what many experts believe is the toughest finishing stretch of holes on the island. These are a Fantastic Four featuring three par-4s over 400 yards from the white tees and a par-3 just a step less than 190.

      Arthur Hills Golf Course

Lastly, you’ll find our Hills course, which is as much a tour of a wildlife sanctuary (keep your eye out for waterfowl and an alligator here or there) as a round of golf with its natural beauty. There are those who say they could play the Hills Course every day and never play it the same way twice with the diversity of strategies presented. PGA Tour star Bryce Molder shot a course-record 60 here while in college, while Tiger Woods took an 8 at the signature 17th, a par-4 that requires a drive and an approach over and around one of the many lagoons on the layout.

At all three courses, you’ll find five sets of tees, including family tees, to create an enjoyable, yet challenging round to players of all skill levels. You’ll also find three different putting surfaces: Champion Bermuda on the Jones Course, shade-tolerant Diamond Zoysia on the Fazio and TifDwarf Bermuda on the Hills Course.

Which of the courses will you take on? Do you dare try all three and 54 holes on one visit?! Let us know if you take the challenge and how you did!

For more information about Hilton Head golf packages or to get a quote on group golf, visit our website atwww.palmettodunes.com or give us a call at 866-650-4130.

97-year-old Starter Retires After 33 Years at Robert Trent Jones Course

If you've ever played golf at our Robert Trent Jones golf course, then you probably know Sammy Mulrain. This 97-year-old lover of golf served as the course starter every Thursday for the last 33 years, never missing a shift! How’s that for dedication? Sammy has finally put down his golf clubs, at least as a career, and retired as our starter ranger at 97 years young.

He’s truly beloved by the staff at Palmetto Dunes and by all the golfers who come through our doors year after year. “You don’t come across people like Sammy every day,” says Brad Marra, vice president of Palmetto Dunes. “He was a great guy to have at Palmetto Dunes and an even greater person to know. His is a wonderful story of service and dedication with a lasting impression on all of us.”

South Carolina golf resortSammy, who was named the 2009 Employee of the Year by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association and recently featured in an article in the Hilton Head Island Packet, is known for his attention to detail, making sure golfers get off on time. A veteran who stormed Normandy in World War II, he’s known for his meticulous efficiency.

He also has a heart for charity and even searches for lost golf balls on his own time, donating them to a local church for their use in fundraising events. Sammy retired to Hilton Head Island in 1978 after a career working for the American Can Company.

When asked about his favorite part of his years at Palmetto Dunes, Sammy says it’s the people and the chance to stay active. In an Island Packet article featuring him several years ago, he said, “That's why I do it at my age, just to talk to people…I try to get them laughing. The Jones course has a hole on the ocean, so I tell them, ‘When you get to the 10th green, don't go swimming or nothing.’”
