Palmetto Dunes Creates Kid-Sized Tennis Courts Per New USTA Guidelines

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Kids coming to play tennis at Palmetto Dunes this summer will find tennis courts designed just for them. Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, ranked third in the world for junior programs by Tennis Resorts Online, is one of the first tennis facilities on Hilton Head Island to shorten its courts for children 10 and under per new U.S. Tennis Association guidelines.

Previously, children played on the regular 78-foot court designed for adults, but new regulations for tournament play require a 36-foot court for children. “The change helps put tennis on the child’s level,” says John Kerr, director of tennis. “It makes it fun faster and they experience success sooner, which makes it more likely they’ll want to stay involved in tennis.”

Palmetto Dunes received a grant from the U.S. Tennis Association to modify its courts for junior tennis play. Because Palmetto Dunes was one of the first clubs to modify its courts for 10 and under tennis, the resort received grant money to cover half the cost and was able to add lines to two of the hard courts.

The lines are just slightly darker green than the surface of the courts and thinner, making them unobtrusive so adult players won’t be distracted. The new lines also stop 3 inches from the regular lines.

Modified courts are appropriate for play through college-level tournaments so only the professionals wouldn’t be playing on them, Kerr says.

In addition to the changes in court size, the Tennis Association is also requiring different balls for youth players. A regulation tennis ball moves too fast, bounces too high and is too heavy for the smaller racquet. Instead, foam balls or balls with low-compression are required for youth play, which Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center has been using for the last few years.
