South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association Names Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes the 2009 Golf Course of the Year
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (August 18, 2009) – Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is pleased to announce the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association recently honored the esteemed Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes as the “2009 Course of the Year.”
“This is an incredible honor and a true testament to the impact that the Arthur Hills course has had on the community and the game of golf,” said Brad Marra, director of golf at Palmetto Dunes. “The Hills course embodies the values we cherish at Palmetto Dunes, offering year-round championship golf in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry.”
Earlier this month, the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association named the Arthur Hills course the 2009 Course of the Year, putting the course in the running against other top venues across the Palmetto State.
The Arthur Hills course was built and designed by master architect Arthur Hills in 1986. The renowned course design blends the topography of the Lowcountry, including the natural slopes of rolling dunes and thick stands of palmettos, with the continuous ocean breeze and an intricate lagoon system, creating many opportunities for off-balance lies and precision shots.
Greenwood Communities & Resorts continually works at maintaining the original design created by Hills in 1986, while incorporating renovations that include new sea walls on four holes and recent updates to the irrigation system. The 18-hole golf course plays 6,651 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 72.9 and it has a slope rating of 129 on Bermuda grass.
The Arthur Hills Golf Course has previously received awards from Fodor’s Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel and Travel + Leisure Golf.
Throughout the years, the Arthur Hills course has hosted a variety of special events for charities including the Celebrity Golf Tournament, the Annual Piggly Wiggly United Way Tournament, and the Week of Champions. The Arthur Hills Course works closely with Lowe’s and Home Depot Foundations to support a variety of national charities including Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club and United Way. The course recently hosted two dozen Marines from the Parris Island Recruit Depot in appreciation for their service. Staff members and volunteers treated these special guests to complimentary golf clinics and on-course golf experience.
The course has also hosted the Patriot Day golf event benefits Wounded Warriors, Inc., an organization which benefits the Fallen Heroes Foundation to support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty.
In recent years, Palmetto Dunes has donated more than $500,000 in free golf gift certificates to local charities including the Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry, the Low Country Autism Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and the Palmetto Animal League. Prior to 2001, the course hosted the Palmetto Dunes Golf World Collegiate every Fall, bringing together the top college teams to experience the complexity of the Arthur Hills golf course and the beauty of Hilton Head Island.
