One of America’s fastest growing sports in terms of popularity, Pickleball is a fun sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Pickleball can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and with a slightly modified tennis net and can be played as doubles or singles.
What makes the sport particularly appealing is that all ages and skill levels can play. The rules are simple and pickleball is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
Demonstrating its commitment to this fast-growing sport, Palmetto Dunes not only added eight pickleball courts, it also hired one of the sport’s most accomplished players, Sarah Ansboury, as its Pickleball Touring Professional and Director of Pickleball Instruction.
A nationally ranked tennis player, Ansboury discovered pickleball in 2014 and was instantly hooked. She entered her first national pickleball tournaments in 2015 and earned Gold and Silver at the September 2015 Tournament of Champions. In November, she medaled four times at the USAPA National Tournament including winning Gold in the Women’s Doubles Open with her friend, Gigi LeMaster.
“Palmetto Dunes is excited to announce our first Ansboury Academy,” said Palmetto Dunes’ Director of Tennis & Pickleball John Kerr. “This academy will be the first of many for Palmetto Dunes that will allow pickleball players to learn from one of the very best instructors in the game.”
Palmetto Dunes has also announced an expansion of its Pickleball Center. Eight new courts are being constructed and are expected to be open for play by mid-October.
The first Ansboury Academy will be held September 24-27 at the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort’s Tennis & Pickleball Center. Participants will enjoy a week of pickleball — 15 hours of instruction — with Sarah and Linh Ansboury. Each day will focus on techniques and tactics for every player to improve on the court.
This week of instruction leads up to The Island Rec Center Pickleball Tournament being hosted at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center September 29-30. Sign up here.
The Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center has been named the top tennis resort in the Carolinas by Tennis Magazine. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort offers outstanding tennis and pickleball packages for players at all skill levels at one of the world's finest family resort destinations. The award-winning tennis resort offers dream vacations for tennis players year-round on Hilton Head Island.
For those who haven’t experienced this exciting and hot new sport, the Pickleball center at Palmetto Dunes is offering a perfect opportunity in the fall. Don’t miss out on the fun!
Wiener Schnitzel has been on the menu at Alexander’s Restaurant since it originally opened its doors, so when we heard that National Wiener Schnitzel Day was just around the corner we thought it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with Matt Little, Alexander’s Chef de Cuisine to see how the dish gets made.
What is Wiener Schnitzel?
Wiener Schnitzel (German for Viennese cutlet) is a traditional Austrian dish, featuring thin cuts of veal, coated in breadcrumbs and pan-fried. It is long-thought to have been invented in Vienna although its origins may date back as far as the 12th century. The first appearance of a Wiener Schnitzel recipe was in a German cookbook in 1831. It’s traditionally served with a garnish of lemon and parsley.
Alexander’s Wiener Schnitzel Recipe
The Wiener Schnitzel at our Hilton Head restaurant Alexander’s is served with a rich brown butter caper sauce alongside velvety whipped potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Watch how it’s made right in the kitchen at Alexander’s and get the recipe to make it at home, below.
1 Veal Cutlet, pounded very thin
2 Eggs, beaten
½ Cup All Purpose Flour
½ Cup Panko Bread Crumbs
1. Pound veal cutlet very thin.
2. Set up standard breading procedure in 3 bowls – dip veal cutlet into all purpose flour, then eggs, then lastly the bread crumbs.
3. In a hot pan, add olive oil and mix around into pan.
4. Add veal cutlet – cook on medium-high heat for about 2 minutes per side.
5. Cook veal cutlet in the oven at 450 degrees for about 2 minutes until brown.
6. Prepare your demi-glace by adding capers to a traditional Espagnole sauce and simmer.
7. Serve cutlets topped with demi-glace sauce and garnished with lemon and parsley.
Time to get cooking! Try this recipe at home and bring the tastes of Palmetto Dunes to your kitchen, and then stop by Alexander’s Restaurant on your next Hilton Head Island vacation!
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America and one of our favorites at Palmetto Dunes! We’ve got eight outdoor pickleball courts, clinics, round robins, and now, a new Pro to help you take your pickleball game to the next level. We sat down with Sarah Ansboury, Palmetto Dunes’ Director of Pickleball Instruction, to talk to her about the game and playing it on Hilton Head Island.
Q: How long have you been playing Pickleball?
A: I started playing pickleball under five years ago. A little over four years ago, I was teaching tennis at a club. I kind of randomly picked up pickleball and all the club members started doing it. And ever since then it's been nonstop.
Q: What drew you to the game?
A: I think what's interesting about pickleball and why I think so many people like it, is that it's such a new sport coming from the tennis community and the tennis world. You know, it’s like the snowboarding versus skiing type of thing. It's a little bit more relaxed and a lot more sociable and it's expanding and growing as we speak, so you can't really deny wanting to be a part of it.
Q: What are your tips for someone who’s never played before?
A: I'd say to anyone who wants to start playing that the first thing to do is to get out on the court. Learning pickleball has probably one of the easiest learning curves compared to especially most racket or paddle sports. So coming out, enjoying some open play with just random people, and then taking a couple of lessons and really getting to know how to play the sport properly. Then you can be out competing or socializing any way that you want as soon as possible.
Q: Do you have a favorite pickleball moment?
A: I'd say the most memorable moment was actually probably one of my earlier moments—the first time I won nationals. It was in 2015 and my first nationals [and I was playing] with my good friend Gigi Le Master. I don't think I can beat that moment. I was completely not expecting to do very well at nationals, to be honest. It was my first experience with it and to have someone that was so much more experienced playing with me…it's the most amazing thing that I've been able to experience since I started.
Q: What brought you to Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort?
A: I did not expect to be at Hilton Head at all. I took a job recently with a professional pickleball registry, which is based out of Hilton Head, and I didn't really have the expectation of moving here, to be honest. I came out and I met John Kerr and to look at the club at Palmetto Dunes. I ended up taking out some locals to play. After speaking with him and getting to know the community, I was like, “This is where I want to be.” It was kind of a no-brainer. It was definitely unexpected but it was within a day I recognized what I wanted to do here.
Q: What are you looking forward to, working at Palmetto Dunes?
A: Right now, I've been here about a month, but we have a lot of goals in our programming. I'm mostly doing semi-private [lessons], privates, special groups for people who want to come here and kind of set up their own little private academy. We have our first four-day Academy on September 25th so sign-ups started last week. Then, in upcoming months we'll add some evening programming and clinics for adults and kids and everything so we're really looking forward to that.
We’re so thrilled to have Sarah Ansboury join our team, and we can’t wait to welcome you too, to try Pickleball at Palmetto Dunes. There is limited space left in September's Ansboury Pickleball Academy! Sign up here.
If there’s one thing that signals summer at Palmetto Dunes, it’s the bustling patio at The Dunes House. This exclusive beachfront restaurant is open to guests and residents of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and is the place to be for stunning views, easy summer eats, and a good time.
Whether you’re grabbing a light lunch before hitting the beach, or enjoying live music on a warm, summer night, or swinging by for one of The Dunes House’s epic Lowcountry Boils, you’ll love the casual, laidback atmosphere, frozen cocktails, and friendly service.
The Dunes House is open for lunch and dinner, weather permitting. Its patio is extra large because it has to be—all of the cooking is done in The Dunes House’s outdoor kitchen. So even if you stop by for a casual drink, we bet that once the smell of the grill hits your nose, you’ll be reaching for the food menu in no time.
There’s limited on-site parking at The Dunes House so it’s no wonder that many prefer to get there by bike. Between April 1 and September 30, you also have the option of taking the free Dunes Buggy shuttle to and from The Dunes House, for the ultimate convenience. Although, once you’re there, relaxing under the shade of an umbrella (or soaking up the sun) and taking in the sights and sounds of Palmetto Dunes’ beautiful sandy beach just steps away, we bet you won’t want to leave.
When you’re working in an outdoor kitchen, the grill is your star player—and boy, do the chefs at The Dunes House know how to grill! Their fish tacos are legendary, the burgers grilled to perfection, and their Carolina BBQ chicken sandwich has just the right amount of sweet and heat.
Looking for something a little lighter? Grab a salad topped with grilled shrimp or share a plate of nachos. For those who are on a family getaway, there’s even a special menu just for kids! The Dunes House also offers catering for special events, making it the perfect venue for a family reunion, beachfront wedding, or corporate event.
The only thing that rivals the incredible beachside food menu at The Dunes House is their drinks menu! It’s definitely one of our favorite places to grab a drink. Craving an ice-cold beer on a hot afternoon? The Dunes House offers a selection of domestic, specialty, and seasonal selections.
If you really want to try what the bartenders at The Dunes House are known for, go for one of the frozen drinks. The frozen margaritas are blended with Sauza Gold Tequila and classic flavors, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, try one of the house specialties like the Tiger Paw or the Carolina Beach.
If you’re into more of a “stirred, not shaken” kind of cocktail, try the Ruby Mule or any of their cocktails on the rocks.
And, since we're in the South, you can bet there's tea on the menu if you're looking for a Lowcountry sip that's non-alcoholic.
Did you know that there are special events happening at The Dunes House almost every day of the month? Live local entertainment livens up the atmosphere every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights during peak season. If you’re visiting in the summer, swing by on Wednesday for a treat! From Memorial Day through to the end of August, Wednesdays are Lobster Night when they serve up fresh lobster dinners with all the fixings. Looking for an authentic Lowcountry dining experience? The Lowcountry Boils at The Dunes House are a must! They take place on Saturday nights throughout the summer. Check the latest events calendar to see what’s going on.
When it comes to casual beachside dining and laidback Lowcountry entertainment, The Dunes House is the place to be! What’s your favorite thing about The Dunes House? Tell us in the comments! And don’t forget to share your Dunes House photos with us on social media using #PalmettoDunes.

10. The Convenience
With two airports servicing Hilton Head Island, plenty of non-stop flights, and easy land access, getting to Hilton Head is as easy as a South Carolina breeze! This year Air Canada launched non-stop service from Toronto, Canada so even our neighbors to the north can hop on a plane to our slice of paradise!
9. The Adventure
Hilton Head Island offers the perfect setting for outdoor adventure. Hit the open water on a sailboat, kayak, or fishing charter, or enjoy the quiet calm of the Palmetto Dunes Lagoon. Bike trails, pillage like pirates, zip-line across the sky, or zoom full speed ahead on a catamaran built for two! There’s no end to thrilling outdoor activities on Hilton Head.
8. The Wildlife
Our scenic natural surroundings provide more than just stunning photo opportunities—they’re home to a vibrant and varied array of wildlife, too! You could see dolphins, sharks, fish, oysters, birds, deer, even gators on your Hilton Head Island vacation.
7. The Weather
We’re fortunate, on Hilton Head Island, to have some of the best weather around! Not only can we golf year round, we enjoy comfortable temperatures regardless of the season. During the summer months, temperatures soar as high as 89 degrees and even in winter the temperature hovers around 60.
6. The Laidback Lifestyle
There’s something incredibly relaxing about the laidback way of life in Lowcountry. We’re never in a rush down here! Taking the time to enjoy the sunshine, beautiful surroundings, and each other’s company is part of Hilton Head’s charm.

Join us at Harbourfest or down at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina for happy hour and you’ll see just what we mean.
2. The Golfing
Hilton Head Island is practically synonymous with good golfing, and it’s no wonder! With over 20 championship golf courses, including our three award-winning golf courses at Palmetto Dunes! There are courses for every experience level and playing style, and some of the best PGA-certified instructors to help you improve all aspects of your game.
1. The Beaches
If there’s one thing on Hilton Head Island that will take your breath away, it’s our beautiful beaches! Year round our guests are wowed by Hilton Head’s white sand, calm surf, stunning sunrises and beautiful water. Whether you’re biking along the water’s edge, taking a surf lesson, or simply enjoying the view, we think you’ll agree that spending the day at the beach on Hilton Head Island is top notch.
When we think about the month of July around Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, one word immediately pops into mind: “Family.”
Indeed, July is the ideal month to spend with your family by the beach, enjoying the outdoor weather and cooling off on the beach or by the pool. Which is also why at Palmetto Dunes, we celebrate July as our “Family Golf” month.
Palmetto Dunes is designed for families to get active together by offering a variety of ways to do just that — including its Hilton Head Family Golf School. Whatever levels at which a family may play, Palmetto Dunes will tailor its golf school to specific needs and skill level. Its head of golf instruction, former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver, is great with kids and teaches them moves like “closing the car door” and “alligator arms” to help them learn golf in a fun and engaging way.
The golf school includes a video analysis sent by email, on-course instruction, rules and etiquette lessons, the school’s video lending library, take-home materials, free range privileges, plus nine holes of golf daily on a space-available basis.
Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort caters to golfers of all levels, having installed permanent junior tees on its Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront golf course, while the George Fazio course caters to juniors. The Fazio junior tees measure 3,384 yards for 18 holes, with the longest hole (No. 10) measuring 316 yards. Holes range between 90 and 316 yards. In addition, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate.
This summer, the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy features lessons and clinics for all ages and skill levels. Palmetto Dunes offers four family-oriented options:

In addition, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort also offers the club fitting, building and repair services of SwingFit, which is owned and operated by Chris Wycoff — one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.”
Away from the golf course, your family will also enjoy Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and its outdoor Southern phenomenon known as HarbourFest. Shelter Cove Harbour is a Mediterranean-style village located mid-island at mile marker 8 across from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, offering casual waterfront dining, unique shopping, live entertainment and beautiful views of Broad Creek. And don’t forget to snap a selfie with the Statue of Neptune, the world’s largest figurative sundial.
Sunset strolls on the beach? Afternoon paddles? A round or two of pickleball? We’ve consulted the stars, touched base with the planets, and we’re ready to share with you what summer 2018 has in store for you!
Aries, your passion, competitive spirit, and unrelenting energy keep you on the go. Non-stop. 365 days of the year. This summer, our challenge for you is easy: Take a break! Use your impulsive nature to book a last-minute beach vacation, grab a beach read, and park yourself in the dunes.
Recent planetary transitions might have inspired you to look inward and focus on self-expression and creative pursuits. We know it’s a lost cause to get you to change your mind when its set, so our suggestion for Taurus is more of a reminder: Don’t forget to spend time with your loved ones this summer. Use the sunshine and take some time to make memories with the ones who matter most, whether it’s around the dining table or by the pool.
Gemini, our favorite Twins, this summer is all about letting your social side shine. Put yourself in situations where you’ll learn new things and exchange ideas with others. Like, a boat tour, a dinner party, or a sunset cruise. Keep your nerves and indecision at bay this summer, and it’ll be one for the books.
You’ve been going through a major cycle of change for years—since 2011 in fact! Starting in June, you’ll see this rapid pace slow down (finally) and we encourage you to take some time to get to know yourself better. We know this isn’t the first thing on Cancer’s “Things I Love To Do” list. Embrace it. This summer is all about going deep and centering yourself now that the storm has passed. Might we a contemplative bike ride to start?
In a perfect world, Leo, you would love everyone and they would love you right back. You’re the first to double tap a pal’s Instagram post (and you expect the same in return). This summer is all about trying new things and keeping that Instagram feed up-to-date. Get up a little earlier and catch a sunrise. Try a pickleball match. Do what you have to do to keep yourself in the spotlight you love.
Modest, but hard working. Precise, yet adaptable. Virgo, it’s time you stop channeling attention into the projects and people you spend so much time improving and focus on you! We don’t necessarily mean spa days, either (though, of course, they’re always encouraged). We think you’re focused energy is best put to use in a new athletic pursuit, which can be just as therapeutic. Try zipping down the beach on two wheels, or learning to surf.
Decisions aren’t your favorite thing, Libra, and this summer we say embrace it. Book a few long weekends on a whim, find yourself a comfortable homebase, and then let the winds decide what to do.
Jupiter, the planet of luck and inspiration, is moving through Scorpio until November 2018. To this we say: Milk it for all its worth! Now is the time to take risks and chase thrills. Feel the need for speed on a CraigCat. Get a bird’s-eye view on a parasailing adventure. Soar through the trees on a zipline. The choice is yours!
Saturn, the planet concerned with teaching karma (aka “no fun”), has finally skedaddled out of your sign after 28-years. Sagittarius, it’s time to celebrate! This summer, we see a lot of travel and adventuring in your future. Road trips, impromptu beach days, and afternoons on the links are all up for grabs.
Serious Saturn hopped right out of Sagittarius and landed right in your lap, Capricorn. Which means this summer is all about process and methodology—something your responsible, serious self knows and loves all too well. Apply your self-discipline to your vacation planning, book early, catch all of the summer deals you can find, and your summer will go exactly how you planned it—music to your ears!
You’re comfortable overthinking and detaching yourself from the here and now, but, dear Aquarius, you have to let that go this summer. Your best bet for the best summer yet is to dive head first into new and fun experiences. Try new things! Taste new flavors! Just make sure you bring a friend or two along for the ride.
Neptune, your ruling planet of inspiration and dreams, will be floating on through Pisces this summer. And, while most of us would flounder underwater, you are going to glide right through it! We see a lot of boating and kayaking in your summer vacation because of Neptune’s transition. This is a great time for you to bring family and friends along the ride on vacation, so you can soak up the memories like the human sponge you are.
Regardless of your zodiac sign, we’re feeling pretty good about a trip to Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort being in your future. Whether you’re booking well in advance, or looking for a last-minute getaway, consult our packages and specials before you book to make your stay even sweeter.
