Palmetto Dunes helps ring in National Bike Month by becoming the first East Coast oceanfront resort to offer “The Golf Bike.” Allows golfers to play at the speed of a cart, while getting paid back in fun and fitness.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- Just in time for National Bike Month, golfers playing Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort's trio of award-winning courses can now pedal from hole to hole versus taking a golf cart or hoofing it.
The first resort in the Carolinas and along the East Coast to offer the revolutionary new “Golf Bike,” Palmetto Dunes visitors can boost their calorie-burning quotient while teeing it up on some of the South's most beautiful and challenging courses — including one of Hilton Head Island’s two oceanfront layouts.
Indeed, bicycling has long been renowned as one of Hilton Head’s most versatile activities. More than one million bikers annually enjoy the island’s 50 miles of paved, winding bike paths — including five miles within Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort itself — or along Hilton Head’s pristine beaches.
Now, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is taking bicycling to the links, helping celebrate National Bike Month in May with the initial delivery of Golf Bikes.
Palmetto Dunes received nine of the first 100 Golf Bikes being delivered this month across the country which allows golfers the ability to play at the speed of a cart while getting paid back with fun and fitness.
“We are always looking for fun new products to enhance our golf experience and The Golf Bike really caught our attention,” said Director of Golf Clark Sinclair.“These specially prepared golf bikes should heighten the fitness experience of a round at Palmetto Dunes.”
The Golf Bike, available at all three courses, will cost the same amount as a golf cart. Golfers interested in using a Golf Bike during their rounds at Palmetto Dunes can reserve one when making their tee time reservation.
Built from the ground up to play golf, The Golf Bike’s step-thru frame allows golfers to easily get on and off the bike. The bike holds up to 14 clubs and supplies are integrated into the frame of the bike, making it stable and easy to balance. The bike’s wide tires and small diameter wheels make for easy acceleration with less impact to the course than a motorized cart.
In 2010, the first prototype Golf Bike was designed and then presented at the 2013 PGA Show’s Inventors Spotlight. Some courses tested the bikes last year before the first 100 of 600 Golf Bikes were delivered this month.
The Golf Bike is yet another Hilton Head Island first and head-turning amenity that’s available at the place Travel and Leisure Magazine called “The Best Family Golf Resort” in the country, on an Island that Golf Digest calls one of its “Top 10 Buddy Trip Destinations.”
Last summer, Palmetto Dunes introduced its exclusive Visage GPS system to the golf carts at the Robert Trent Jones Course that allows for an interactive experience. Previously, it rolled out the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art golf app on Hilton Head Island that allows you to book future rounds and see what else is happening on and off the three courses and was the place that brought golf-outfitted Segways to the Island a few years ago.

Not that you needed any convincing, but how great does it sound to skip work -- just for a day or two -- and head over to Hilton Head Island for some golf in the warm sun?
Here are 9 reasons to play hooky from work and spend the day at Palmetto Dunes’ golf courses instead:
1. Get warm - There’s a pretty good chance it’s warmer here than wherever you live.
2. Clear your head - Don’t we all need some time away from the action to clear our head so we can think better. Who knows? Maybe you’ll return with a slew of new ideas gained on the golf course.
3. You need the exercise - It’ll be great for your health to get out and walk the course (or try our new golf bikes coming this spring). Plus, some fresh air and sunshine does a body good!
4. You’ll feel younger - Calling in sick just may bring back a few memories of those good ol’ school days where you just may have done something similar.
5. You’ll be nicer - Won’t your colleagues appreciate your new attitude after some much deserved leisure time?
6. Get in touch with nature - Not only can you enjoy the sport of golf, you’ll be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Lowcountry from live oaks with hanging moss and palm trees to our lovely 11-mile lagoon system and its feathered friends who call it home. Oh, and don’t miss the azalea show in spring!
7. It’s a stress reliever - Now, we don’t want you throwing your clubs for stress relief, but a solid round of golf can be a good way to let go of some built up frustration and relieve the effects of hard work.
8. Escape technology - Get away from the computer screen for a day and even be daring enough to turn off your phone! Enjoy the camaraderie, the weather and the purity of the game.
9. It’s more fun - Well, enough said on this one! Just about anything is more fun than work, right?
Have we convinced you to take a day off work and come to Palmetto Dunes? Good! Call us at 866-650-4130 or get a quick golf quote.

The slight, almost imperceptible tug on the rod tip signaled the sheepshead had taken the crab in his mouth. Pulling back gently to tighten the connection I waited for the second tap. At this point, history has taught me that it may be too late, the crab crushed and the fish gone, but there it was, another light tap!
Setting the hook quickly the classic tug and war battle was on. Bending the rod double on surging runs and taking drag, the sheepshead did his best to return to the structure below. After several minutes we finally had color, the black and white striped master bait thief was close. But they never give up easy and the fish took line again and headed for the depths.
Back and forth he went until finally the fish was close enough to slide the net under. Weighing around eight pounds, the sheepshead was mostly grown, while weights in the double digits are possible, few are caught over the ten pound mark.
Sheepshead are present year round in the low country but March is a banner month for this fishery. A member of the snapper family, they rank in my list of favorites to catch Difficult to hook due to their feeding habits, a real scrapper when it comes to fighting and last but definitely not least- they are delicious on the plate. A large set of teeth, almost human like, are used to crush barnacles, crabs and other hard shell critters.
The preferred bait for most anglers are fiddler crabs. The most common rig is a fish finder rig, a sliding sinker rigged above a short leader with the hook at the end. Dropping the crab over structure until the sinker hits bottom, then reeling the sinker up a foot or so allows the angler, if he’s lucky, to feel the light tap or tug when the sheepie takes the crab in his mouth. Only seconds pass before the sheepshead crushes the crab, spits the hook and then he’s on his way. Needless to say you need a good supply of fiddlers if you want to seriously sheepshead fish. Fresh clams and live shrimp are also productive baits.
One of the things I like most about March is that sheepshead are the harbingers of the season. They kickstart our local season, keeping us busy until the cobia show in late April and May, but that’s another month and another story. Now it’s time to catch the sheepies!
P.S. A note for our guests and residents of northern origin, these are not the same fish as the freshwater species you know from back home.
