To say Callaway Golf is riding high these days would be an understatement. In the past month Callaway tour professionals brought home some of golf’s biggest prizes. Still teenage phenom, Lydia Ko, won her second major championship at the ANA Inspiration. England’s Danny Willett closed with a final round 67 to win The Masters and the coveted green jacket. And just last week, Branden Grace won his first PGA Tour event capturing the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island. Must be the clubs, right?
Team Callaway certainly thinks so and wanted to put their new 360 Face Cup Technology to the test. Their plan … travel to Hilton Head Island and ask unsuspecting golfers to hit a few shots with their existing irons followed by hitting the new Callaway XROS irons. What is 360 Face Cup Technology you ask? Well, to keep it simple, the entire club face is the sweet spot which guarantees more distance.
To make things fun, Callaway decided to bring in PGA Tour Radio Hosts John Maginnes and Brian Katrek for a little friendly competition to see whose golfers would achieve the most total yards gained. The prize: bragging rights. Team Maginnes consisted of golfers from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and Team Katrek filled his squad with golfers from Sea Pines Resort. In order to track the competition down to the yard, Callaway Golf brought in TrackMan technology to capture and report the data. No guessing for this fierce competition!
So, did golfers see increased distance with the new Callaway technology?
Did Team Maginnes triumph over Team Katrek? Watch the entertaining video below to see for yourself…

At Palmetto Dunes, we’ve got your every need covered at our three pro shops and with our expert staff. With this how-to guide, you’ll be geared up and hitting the golf course like a pro just in time for the peak of the season!
1. Get fitted.
Your best golf game starts with a professional club fitting. Palmetto Dunes has your fitting needs covered with Chris Wycoff, one of Golf Digest’s 100 Best Club Fitters in America and a dedicated fitter at our Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. At Palmetto Dunes you’ll not only get your clubs fitted, but a complete swing analysis as well! Learn more about our SwingFit analysis here.
2. Grab the #1 iron in golf.
When you’re gearing up for a new golf season, you want to be sure that you’re investing in gear that will help your game. Enter Callaway’s new 360 Face Cup technology. Hype around the new irons that use this technology including Callaway's new APEX irons (pictured above) is building. The 360 Face Cup allows makes the face of the club as efficient as possible. The face is flexible allowing for more consistent ball speeds at every impact location. The overall result is that pretty much everyone will get better distance with these irons.
Our pro shop at the Robert Trent Jones course has both the Callaway Apex and Apex Pro reader to be fitted. We’ve even checked the distance for you! Take a look for yourself in our video.
3. Learn app-solutely everything you can about your favorite courses.
Keep score, view yardages, book tee times and pack a virtual caddie in your pocket with the Palmetto Dunes Golf App, available for free on Apple and Android devices. You can even make a plan for the 19th hole, by viewing menus at our course dining options. Technology like apps and smart watches can help your overall game and keep track as your scores get lower and lower in the process!
4. Track your stats with Smart Watches that let you know your game.

Understanding your golf game is essential for improving your score, and advances in wearable technology make it easy to get on-the-spot coaching and game analysis. Smartwatches like the Apple Watch can lend an edge that clubs and fitters can’t.Golf-specific devices from Garmin and Bushnell provide a full interface to track swing and distance data in real-time. The watch apps work just like a phone on your wrist and come pre-loaded with map data on many courses, including all three Palmetto Dunes courses. As you use it, it’ll slowly build a complete statistical picture for you to evaluate.
5. Pick the right putter.
Choosing a quality putter is all about understanding the fine-tuned technology and design that goes into making it. A lot of putting is in the feel, but how your club handles, how much it weighs, and how it strikes the ball can help your short game.
Nike has designed the new Method Origin putter to perfect all these factors, and it’s without a doubt a winner, having been used by various PGA Tour winners last year, including four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who helped test it.
It’s an elite putter aimed at the best players, but it’s surprisingly user-friendly too. In particular, its grooves cut down on skidding, giving both experts and amateurs a lot more consistency no matter how the ball is hit.
This club is a great tool to tackle the kind of complex greens you’ll find on the bottom half of the George Fazio course.
The best gear in the business won’t improve your game the way consistent practice will, so it’s time to start planning your golf getaway to Palmetto Dunes! We’ve got some of the best golf courses on Hilton Head Island, and our daily lessons and clinics – and expert golf instructors – are just what you’ll need to take your golf game up a notch in the 2016 golf season. So get shopping, grab your gear, and we’ll see you on the green!

With this week’s golf spotlight shining on Hilton Head Island — and the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage — just minutes away at mid-island, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort continues to offer its own distinct, Lowcountry golf experiences.
In the spirit of RBC Heritage week, Palmetto Dunes will host a variety of events at its renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. On Monday, April 11 from 9 am to 4 pm at the driving range, there will be a free Club Fitting 15 Minute Challenge by SwingFit. Then, former PGA Tour professional Doug Weaver will host a free golf exhibition from 4 pm to 4:50 pm. On Tuesday, there will be a free TaylorMade Golf Fitting Day by appointment from 10 am to 2 pm, followed by Wednesday free Club Fittings at the NIKE Tour van by appointment from 10 am to 4 pm. On Thursday, try the latest styles at the Ecco Comfort Tech Van from 10 am to 2 pm.
“It’s an electric week around here,” said Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort Director of Golf Clark Sinclair. “Our guests and residents are constantly coming and going back and forth to the [RBC Heritage]. The tournament helps create an exciting buzz throughout the resort.”
It is a synergy that dates back to the mid-1960s, when a group of physicians and executives from Greenwood, S.C., entered into an innovative business venture with Charles Fraser. For $1,000 an acre, the group bought a 2,000-acre property that would become the award-winning Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
This week, those seeking a break from the tournament traffic on the south end of Hilton Head Island can enjoy Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort’s wide variety of luxurious accommodations along with its acclaimed trio of golf course designs by Robert Trent Jones, Arthur Hills and George Fazio and many more resort activities.
Finally, a little history: While the RBC Heritage is known for its candy-cane striped lighthouse that overlooks its 18th green, Palmetto Dunes boasts a lighthouse of its own with some renown. The Hilton Head Lighthouse in the Leamington neighborhood on the Arthur Hills Course was built in 1881 and put to use in 1884.
In August 1898, the lighthouse keeper, a man named Adam Fripp, died of a heart attack while trying to sustain the light. Right before he passed away, Fripp urged his 21-year-old daughter, Caroline, to keep the light burning, but she died three weeks later. Since her passing, it has been reported that a girl (who wears her blue dress), known as “The Blue Lady” has been seen in one of the lighthouse windows or at the foot of the lighthouse on wild, stormy nights.
While golf fans around the world are thinking about beautiful Hilton Head Island and its rich heritage in the game this week, they should think no further than Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.

Golf Digest Magazine's 2015 #2 Golf Instructor in South Carolina and Hilton Head Island's 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year
Much like Michael Jordan redefined basketball; defending Masters champ Jordan Spieth scores on many fronts.
Jordan Spieth has won the hearts of many as he has conquered the game of golf. Spieth left college early after dominating NCAA Men’s Golf as a freshman at the University of Texas, where he captured the individual national championship.
Just one year later, in 2013, Spieth was PGA Rookie of the Year and he became the youngest player to earn a PGA Tour Membership, play in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup and win on the PGA Tour. In 2015, Spieth was named Player of the Year after winning the U.S. Open, Masters, The Tour Championship, and two other PGA Tour events.
One attribute that makes Spieth successful and sets him apart is the fact that he is an incredible putter who does it differently. How so? By employing a cross handed grip. This allows him to make a better, squarer stroke, resulting in more solid impact and ball control. When you place your lead hand lower than your trail hand it can adjust your shoulders, which controls the direction of the stroke. Many golfers unknowingly open their shoulders, giving them a natural stroke that scrapes across the ball, which makes the ball spin and roll away from their target … but not Spieth.
Another interesting characteristic of his play is his tendency to putt with his eyes on the cup. This allows him to relieve tension and focus. Many golf instructors, myself included, encourage students to do this so they learn to trust their mechanics and play golf on a more unconscious level. Have you heard of “paralysis from analysis”? Analyzing and mulling over all the 1,000 variables in a golf shot can stymie your execution of the shot and steal your joy. Jordan Spieth enjoys the difficult moments in golf because he has learned to react to the target, like in baseball, which was his first love as a kid.
But Spieth hasn’t just found success in his game of golf. Inspired by his sister Ellie, who as born with a neurological disorder, he launched the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation, a charitable endeavor focused on providing financial assistance and support to children with special needs, as well as military families and junior golfers. With all of the opportunities he was given, Spieth chose to serve and help others in the community, which is one of his biggest dreams — to give back in some of the biggest ways possible.
Some things can’t be taught, but technique and respect are teachable qualities that end up not only shaping a golfer’s game, but also their outlook and attitude.
Stop by the Robert Trent Jones Golf Pro Shop at Palmetto Dunes Resort and get outfitted like Jordan at our Under Armour Concept Shop.
You did it! You’ve made it through another winter and now spring is in the air. Spring gives us lots to celebrate, with longer days, lighter clothing, and even brighter skies!
Although winter is mild on Hilton Head, springtime brings a certain kind of rejuvenation and optimism, reminding us that summertime is just around the corner - and we think that’s a cause for celebration!
Here’s how to celebrate spring at Palmetto Dunes:
‘Par-tee’ on our three championship golf courses.
It’s time for a ‘hole’ new golf season. Why not make it ‘tee’-rrific? All puns aside, our three award-winning golf courses are distinctively different, with pristine conditions and challenging layouts, making Palmetto Dunes the perfect place for you to get back into the ‘swing’ of things after a long winter!
Relax on a patio
The only things you’ll find frozen at Palmetto Dunes are the drinks! And of course, every celebration should include food. Now that the days are getting longer, that also means The Dunes House is open later (depending on the weather, The Dunes House opens at 11 a.m. and stays open until dark!) Enjoy this laid-back beach bar and restaurant and its spectacular view of the beach.
If you prefer a golf course view, head to Big Jim’s patio, which overlooks our Robert Trent Jones course. Every celebration needs vino, so visit Big Jim’s for Wine Down Wednesday and enjoy half price bottles of wine. Cheers to spring!
Fall in ‘love’ with Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center
At the heart of the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, you'll find 26 clay tennis courts, five of these courts are designated for junior/POP tennis and eight for pickleball.
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing new sports in North America and it’s great for all ages. It’s a cross between tennis, ping-pong and badminton, created to provide families with a game they can play together. Give it a try!
Shop your winter woolies off!
It’s time to ditch the winter layers for shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops! There are plenty of unique boutiques and stores on Hilton Head, so forget your winter woes with lighter clothes and one-of-a-kind souvenirs of your springtime getaway. Our favorite spots to shop are along the waterfront at Shelter Cove Harbour, the golf pro shops at Palmetto Dunes, and our tennis pro shop.
‘Seas’ the day on a boat
Shelter Cove Marina is the largest deep-water marina on Hilton Head Island and home to some of the island’s best boat tours, rentals and water sports. Choose a leisurely exploration of Hilton Head’s coastal waterways or a fun-filled fishing adventure. Rent a boat, go on a nature tour, take a dolphin cruise - there’s no better way to ‘sail’-ebrate spring than on a boat!
Palmetto Dunes Resort’s Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course on Hilton Head Island enters Golfweek magazine's 2016 “Best Courses You Can Play” at No. 9 in South Carolina.
Golfweek magazine’s rating panel took a fresh look at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort’s venerable Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course, and as a result the resort masterpiece has catapulted into the 2016 rankings of the “Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina” at No. 9 in the state.
The Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course has been long been rated by Golfweek readers among the best courses in the Southeast, and now the magazine’s ranking panel concurs. One of only two oceanfront holes on Hilton Head Island, the RTJ Course’s signature hole, the dramatic par-five 10th, which was named a “South Carolina Dream Hole,” offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and is widely considered one of the most spectacular holes in the United States.
An extensive 2003 renovation of the Jones Oceanfront Course involved reshaping and restructuring tees, greens and bunkers. Workers also elevated and reshaped the fairways, and improved natural drainage with the addition of the unique, 11-mile lagoon system that weaves its way through and around all three resort golf courses. Adding a set of junior or “short course” tees to the Jones Oceanfront Course’s layout enabled the resort to launch the Palmetto Dunes Junior Golf Academy and underscored Greenwood Development’s commitment to the next generation of golfers.
When renovation work was completed, the South Carolina Board of Directors of the National Golf Course Owners Association named it the 2003 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program, has also designated the course a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” for its commitment to providing a sanctuary for wildlife.
All three golf courses at Palmetto Dunes — each one distinctively different and uniquely appealing — have been named the South Carolina Golf Course of the Year, including designs by Arthur Hills and George Fazio.
Golfweek's eclectic ranking panel consists of 675 voters from seven countries who rely on 10 criteria to rate a golf course, including overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology, and the “Walk in the park test,” which rates the sense of the course as worthy of spending four hours on it. The number of courses per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play; and the Golfweek rankings include daily-fee layouts and golf courses accessible via resorts.
Spring Break is just around the corner, and Palmetto Dunes is the perfect destination for your family vacation. Whether you’re travelling with young kids or teenagers, looking for adventure or R&R, have the best spring break vacation ever, with these tips:
Spread out, make room.
Our rental vacation homes and villas are ideal for family vacations. Lots of bedrooms and common space mean there’s room for everyone, and our pet-friendly rentals mean your furry friend won’t be left out of the fun!
A spring break vacation is a great way to bring the family together, but scheduling time and room for some alone time will help keep conflict to a minimum and ensure everyone has nothing but an enjoyable time.
Pick the right soundtrack.
Nothing gets a party started like the perfect playlist, and whether you’re lounging by the pool, cooking up a storm, or setting the scene for a slumber party, the Hilton Head Island Spotify Channel will help you set the scene.
Learn something new.
Check out our golf and tennis clinics! There’s a different one every day of the week! Or enroll your family in a private lesson – you’ll be playing like the pros in no time. During your stay at Palmetto Dunes, you can learn an entirely new sport! We now offer Pickleball and POP Tennis, two court-based sports that are fun for any age or fitness level!
One of the most fun things to do on Hilton Head Island is get outdoors and explore. Biking is hands down the best way to get around. Or rent a kayak and explore Hilton Head Island by water! You never know what wildlife you’ll come across or what memories you’ll make.
Find an activity for everyone.
One of the struggles when planning a family vacation is ensuring everyone is having a fun time. Your 16 year-old daughter may not want to do the same thing as your 11 year-old son, and that’s okay! Remember that just because you’re taking a family trip together doesn’t mean you don’t all still have individual interests.
One of the best things about Hilton Head Island is the lowcountry lifestyle. So take a cue, and sit back and relax. Your Spring Break vacation will be over before you know it, so slow down and enjoy every moment.
