    Lowcountry Lingo

Palm trees, sweet tea, beautiful beaches, oyster roasts and fresh fish, porches—there are all sorts of signs that you’re in The South. If you listen carefully, you may pick up on another undeniable sign that you’re on Hilton Head Island: our Lowcountry lingo! Have you ever heard any of these phrases while you were staying at Palmetto Dunes?

If you ask a Southerner for directions while out for a bike ride, or if you’re trying to find your way to The Dunes House or one of our Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina restaurants, don’t be surprised if you hear the word yonder in their reply. Yonder describes distance, but how much exactly? No one is too sure.

A common Lowcountry saying that indicates someone is planning to do something. For example, someone might say they’re fixin’ to try the new menu at Alexander’s Restaurant. They may not be heading to the restaurant tonight for dinner, but you can bet it’s on their to-do list.

No, it’s not an insult or an interjection, it’s a sports team! The varsity sports teams of the University of South Carolina are known as the Gamecocks and they’re hugely popular! That is, of course, unless you cheer for their rivals, the Clemson University Tigers. Join us at Big Jim’s to catch all of your favorite sports action.

When you're at Palmetto Dunes you might hear someone talk about the general store. They’re not just talking about any old shop! They’re talking about The General Store, located across from the Tennis Center and by the Robert Trent Jones course. Hilton Head Island pros know that this is the place to fuel up, grab essentials for your vacation rental, and chat with a coffee on the front porch.

This Southern expression is fairly self-explanatory: whomever you’re talking about is extremely happy. Maybe they aced a hole on one of our Hilton Head golf courses or caught a fish while out on one of our boat charters. Or, maybe you and your friends will be happier than a pig in mud after spending the day at Palmetto Dunes Beach.

This versatile Southern phrase is said when a person is expressing a belief, guess, fact, or musing. We reckon that a beachfront villa rental is a perfect place for a memorable vacation! (See what we did there?)

We think you'll find that the people you meet on Hilton Head Island are friendly, helpful, and courteous. We can't help it! Good manners are a way of life down here, and as such, you'll hear "sir” or “ma’am” practically everywhere you go. Chalk it up to Southern charm and gentleness.

Last but not least! We couldn’t talk about Southern sayings and leave out the phrase you’re likely to hear most of all: y’all! This version of the plural second person pronoun is ingrained in our way of speech down here in The South, and we’re sure y’all won’t make it through your Hilton Head Island vacation without hearing it more than once.

What Lowcountry lingo have you heard when visiting Palmetto Dunes? Leave us a comment with your favorite Southern phrase, and start planning your next Hilton Head vacation so you can come hear our Lowcountry lingo for yourself!

The Fourth of July is the holiday of summer and we can’t think of a better place to spend it than at Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina. There will be special events happening all day long, ending with the biggest display of fireworks on Hilton Head Island at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina!

Before you “ooh and ahh” at our spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display, head to Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina for music and entertainment by Shannon Tanner, our beloved entertainer and musician from HarbourFest at Shelter Cove.

Tanner will host two performances at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. on July 4, so get your dancing shoes on and your singing voice ready! Cappy the Clown will also be there with kids activities, face painting and more from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.!

Take the time to stroll around Hilton Head’s largest—and in our opinion most beautiful—marina to visit our shops and boutiques while waiting for the fun to begin. Pick one of the seven restaurants at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and make the most of your Fourth of July holiday by dining in style. Many of our restaurants offer outdoor patios, live music and water views.

Our Independence Day celebration is so popular that parking can fill up quickly at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina. Two additional parking lots along Highway 278 will be made available nearby on July 4th. Leave your car in one of these secure parking lots and hop the free shuttle, which runs from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., over to Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and back.

View our Fourth of July Parking Map here.

If you’re staying with us at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, an even better way to get to the fireworks is to walk or ride your Hilton Head Outfitters bike. Take the pedestrian access that runs underneath Highway 278 for safety and to avoid traffic. The free Dunes Buggy shuttle will also be running between the resort and Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina for guests of the resort on July 4th from 5 pm - 11 pm.

This year’s Fourth of July fireworks will start at dusk. For show updates, follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

See you there! Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.

    Recipe: Alexander’s Summer Watermelon Salad

Summertime and the eating is easy—especially with this light and refreshing summer watermelon salad from Alexander’s Restaurant. Alexander’s, a favorite Hilton Head Island restaurant, recently reopened and they’ve been serving up delicious seafood and seasonally inspired dishes to rave reviews. Chef de Cuisine Sean Carroll has handed over this recipe so you can take the tastes of Palmetto Dunes home with you!

    Ingredients

    Balsamic Vinaigrette
    2 Tbsp Honey
    1 Tbsp Creole mustard
    1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
    1 ea. Shallot sliced
    1 Tbsp Garlic minced
    1 Tsp Worcestershire sauce
    1 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
2 Cup Blended oil (75% Canola 25% Extra Virgin Olive oil)

    Marinated Watermelon
    1 ea. Watermelon, seedless
    1/2 Cup Grenadine
    2 Tbsp Red wine vinegar
    2 ea. Garlic cloves, crushed
1.5 Cup Blended Oil (75% Canola 25% Extra Virgin Olive oil)
    2 Tsp Granulated sugar

    For the Salad
    1 lb. Mixed greens, rinsed
    4 Tbsp Smoked almonds, crushed
6 oz. Ricotta Salata cheese, shaved with a peeler
2 oz. Fresh basil, torn by hand

    Directions

    1. Take the watermelon and remove the rind. Cut the watermelon into bite size pieces. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade, and whisk together. Pour over the watermelon, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
    2. For the dressing, combine all ingredients, except for the blended oil, in a food processor. Combine until well incorporated. With the processor on, slowly add the oil, until the dressing is emulsified. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt, pepper, lemon, and/or sugar.
    3. Now it is time for the party to start. Place the marinated watermelon at the base of the plate (like the foundation). In a mixing bowl, mix the greens with the balsamic vinaigrette. Place over the watermelon. Take the torn basil and stud in different areas throughout the salad. Top the salad with the shaved ricotta and sprinkle the smoked almonds over the top.

This recipe serves 8 people and can be plated “party style” or individually. Enjoy!

Read up on some more of our favorite Alexander’s dishes and don’t forget to dine with them next time you’re here!

U.S. Open brings to mind our own Robert Trent Jones Sr.

As the U.S. Open rolls around this week, those of us at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort can’t help but think about our own, Robert Trent Jones Sr., who not only designed the resort’s original golf course in 1967, but also was the original “U.S. Open Doctor.”

Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort

In his seven decades as golf's most prolific architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1906-2000) logged an estimated eight million miles of travel while creating or remodeling more than 400 courses in 45 states in the U.S. and 35 countries worldwide, including more courses — 79 — that have hosted national championships than any other golf architect.

    Robert Trent Jones Sr.

“The sun never sets,” he enjoyed saying, “on a Robert Trent Jones golf course.”

Through the years, Mr. Jones worked on 21 courses that would hold the U.S. Open, notably Oakland Hills in Birmingham, Mich., in 1951. None of the world's best golfers broke par 70 that year until the final day when Ben Hogan, the winner, shot 67 and Clayton Heafner shot 69.

At the presentation ceremony, Hogan said, “I’m glad I brought this course, this monster, to its knees.”

The architect known as “Trent” was infamous for his sadistic use of huge bunkers, ponds, creeks and undulating greens that would often anger the touring pros, especially during the U.S. Open. Mr. Jones believed he was merely defending par against the evolution of golf equipment and the golf ball. “The shattering of par without a proper challenge is a fraud,” he often said. “I make them play par.”

When Mr. Jones redesigned the fourth hole at the Baltusrol Golf Club's Lower Course in Springfield, N.J., before the 1954 U.S. Open, some members thought the par 3 over a pond was unfair. He offered to play the hole along with Johnny Farrell, the club pro, and two members while other members watched.

Playing from the 165-yard members tee, Mr. Farrell and the two members each hit balls on the green. Mr. Jones stepped up and swung his 4-iron. His ball landed on the green and rolled into the cup for a hole in one. Turning to the assembled members, he said: “Gentlemen, the hole is fair. Eminently fair.”

In addition to 21 U.S. Open courses, Mr. Jones worked on a dozen courses that have held the PGA Championship and six that held the World Cup. He designed Valderrama in Spain, the site of the 1997 Ryder Cup matches, and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club course in Manassas, Va. — where former President Obama is reported to have recently joined — site of four Presidents Cup matches.

Mr. Jones was the first architect inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He was a founding member and a former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and the first recipient of its Donald Ross Award. Perhaps not coincidently, Mr. Jones’s death came on the eve of the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where Tiger Woods won by a record-setting 15 strokes.

Of course, at Palmetto Dunes we are well aware that this is also Father's Day weekend and Mr. Jones was certainly a good father, too. His two sons, acclaimed architects in their own right, have made an impact on the U.S. Open as well. Bobby Jr., inherited his father’s name, but Rees earned his father’s moniker, “The Open Doctor,” through his renovations of national championship sites, including Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black. The 2015 U.S. Open was contested at Chambers Bay, the first Robert Trent Jones Jr. course to host our national championship.

During this U.S. Open week, visit Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and enjoy the resort’s original golf course while playing tribute to its mastermind, the original “U.S. Open Doctor,” Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Palmetto Dunes’ 2017 Father’s Day Gift Guide

June is here and that means that Father’s Day 2017 is just around the corner. Whether your father is a golf addict, a lover of all things laid-back, or a music buff, we’ve rounded up our list of the best gifts to say, “Thanks, Dad!”

Give dad the gift of great tunes with a portable speaker. You can even find waterproof speakers—perfect for listening by the pool at your vacation rental or at a family beach day on Palmetto Dunes Beach. Is his music not quite your taste? He can keep it to himself with a pair of Bluetooth earbuds.

Help dad reminisce about the coffee at Hilton Head Social Bakery, or on the patio of his oceanfront vacation rental with a coffee maker! For the guy on the go, a thermal travel mug is just the thing!

The Pro Shops at Palmetto Dunes have an excellent selection of men’s shirts perfect for a Father’s Day gift! Or, order from our online shop and have it personalized.

Dad will love a Mission Belt, a popular accessory for years since making an appearance on the TV show “Shark Tank.” These belts are built to be adjustable with a leather strap that clicks into the buckle for a perfect fit. Plus, the company donates money for each belt sold to fight poverty and global hunger.

What would a summer vacation be without a good beach read? Treat dad to a best seller, or the inspiration for one of the summer’s big blockbusters.

We think that men deserve to be pampered, too! Our spas offer several services Dad will love. Or, bring the spa home to him with a soothing beard treatment or facial cream.

Vinyl is back! Get Pop some pop hits from back in the day on vinyl, and get your siblings to chip in for a record player.

Golf headcovers are a booming business. With the right design and brand, limited edition covers can retail for hundreds of dollars per item. PRG offer a wide range of covers; all sizes from rescue club to putter and everything in between.

From grabbing groceries to walking the dog, to biking your way through your next golf game, every bit of exercise counts! Help Dad prove it with a fitness tracker. Some are even waterproof, and track heart rate as well.

Whether you’re about to hit ‘send’ on an important email, or want to take one more photo of a beautiful Hilton Head sunset, nothing is worse than running low on batteries! A portable cellphone charger, or a backup battery cellphone case, is a great gift for dads on the go.

Miguel’s Margarita? Scott’s Fish Market martini? A frozen Tiger Paw from The Dunes House? What’s dad’s favorite cocktail when vacationing on Hilton Head Island? Help him recreate it with ingredients and bar accessories. Is a cold beer more your dad’s thing? He can make his very own brew using a beer starter kit.

The Callaway Chrome Soft X Truvis Golf Balls are best known for the soccer-ball look of the design that will maximize dad’s ability to see (and find) his ball. They have also completely redefined golf ball performance by elevating speed and feel for an unbeatable combination of distance, soft feel and control, along with a piercing and workable ball flight, and an advanced mantle to regulate spin.

Of, course, the very best Father’s Day gift is quality time together at Palmetto Dunes. Browse our vacation packages to start planning your getaway.

    Your Guide to HarbourFest 2017

Summer on Hilton Head Island means one thing: HarbourFest! This weekly celebration at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina is a longstanding Lowcountry tradition, and one that Palmetto Dunes guests eagerly await each year.

This signature summer event begins in mid-June and lasts through to mid-August. The fun, family-friendly event delights kids and adults alike. If you’re planning to visit Hilton Head Island this summer, don’t miss it! Here’s a quick guide to HarbourFest’s weekly events.

    Fireworks

The flagship HarbourFest event is the weekly fireworks display! In 2017, fireworks will be held (weather permitting) on Tuesday evenings on the following dates:

    June 13th, 20th, 27th July 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th August 1st, 8th, 15th

Fireworks displays begin at dusk, but most families arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour early to enjoy live music or grab a bite to eat.

In the event that Tuesday fireworks are cancelled due to rain, they’ll be rescheduled for Wednesday (weather permitting, of course).

    Live Music & Entertainment

Live music is another great reason to check out HarbourFest! Shannon Tanner has been entertaining families at HarbourFest for 29 seasons – kids just love him! Catch him starting Memorial Day, when he plays shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Beginning Thursday, June 15, Shannon Tanner will be joined by the Oyster Reefers for a weekly island-inspired “Parrot Palooza” concert series. The shows happen every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Don’t forget to wear your dancing shoes!

Little ones love meeting Cappy the Clown, who performs at HarbourFest Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
