Planning to be on Hilton Head Island on the Fourth of July? Then you don’t want to miss the biggest – and we think prettiest – display of fireworks on the island at Shelter Cove Harbour!
Before fireworks light up the night sky over Broad Creek at dusk, our beloved entertainer and musician Shannon Tanner, who has been playing at HarbourFest at Shelter Cove Harbour for 26 years, will perform another not-to-miss show. Tanner will host two performances at both 6:30 and 8 p.m. on July 4, so get your dancing shoes on and your singing voice ready to enjoy songs like “My Hair Had a Party Last Night” and “Purple People Eater.”
Because our Independence Day celebration is so popular, parking can fill up quickly at Shelter Cove Harbour. Two additional parking lots nearby will be available for July 4th where traffic will be directed. Feel free to leave your car in one of these secure parking lots and hop the free shuttle, which runs all evening, over to Shelter Cove and back.
If you’re staying with us at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, an even better way to get to the fireworks is to ride your bike (Hilton Head Outfitters is happy to help you with bike rentals!) or walk. Just be sure to take the pedestrian access which runs underneath Highway 278 for safety and to avoid traffic. The free Dunes Buggy shuttle will also be running between the resort and Shelter Cove for guests of the resort.
Come early for dinner at one of the many restaurants at Shelter Cove, several of which offer live music and water views. Try the two newest additions: La Fontana Waterfront Grill & Pizza and Mediterranean Harbour Bar & Grill both of which have outdoor seating. You can also shop at all of the great stores and boutiques while waiting for the fun to begin. And don’t forget to snap a selfie with the Statue of Neptune, the world’s largest figurative sundial located right here at Shelter Cove Harbour!
Have a safe and wonderful Fourth and we hope to see you at the fireworks!

If you like to fish, but are looking for an even bigger adventure, try shark fishing. Captain Miles Altman and Bayrunner offer shark fishing charters out of Shelter Cove Marina throughout summer, a great time to hunt for sharks.
Around Hilton Head Island you can find many different types of sharks like Atlantic sharp nose, blacktips, spinners, dusky, lemon, bull and tiger sharks. Captain Miles says that at times in the summer, it’s hard not to catch one! “You haven’t been to Hilton Head until you have caught a shark,” he says.
Captain Miles says sharks can be lots of fun to catch, and kids especially will enjoy the battle and later bragging rights. What kid wouldn’t love to share a picture of his freshly caught shark with all his or her friends.
Blacktips and spinners like to add an aerial aspect to the battle, says Captain Miles, while bulls and tigers offer a brutish slugfest guaranteed to leave you with some sore muscles. Expect to have a bent rod by the time you’re finished!
Check out this video of a huge 10-foot tiger shark caught in Hilton Head after a two-hour fight.
Fishing with Captain Miles is a great experience, as he’s been trolling the waters of the Atlantic for more than 40 years and knows just where to find the best Hilton Head sharks.
The Bayrunner is a 24-foot boat that holds four people for a 3-hour evening shark fishing excursion. Book your shark fishing charter by calling us at 866-650-4130. W can’t wait to see your pictures!

One of the best things about Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is the opportunity for golfers to experience three 18-hole championship Hilton Head golf courses all at one resort with first tees no more than 5 minutes apart. Designers Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio and Arthur Hills all have established golf courses at our resort and each offers a unique playing experience for the golf lover.
Robert Trent Jones Golf Course
The Jones course is perhaps best known for its oceanfront setting with one of only two oceanfront holes on the entire island. Its layout is immaculate and stunning in its beauty and the view from the famed 10th green is not one that will soon be forgotten (we’ve even had weddings there!). Jones plays away from the clubhouse until it reaches its famed back-to-back par-5s that play out to the ocean. It’s also known to have the most accommodating fairways of the trio of courses, though keep in mind you might lose a ball or two as the course winds its way over the resort’s inland lagoon system.
George Fazio Golf Course
We hear a lot that the Fazio course is the most challenging of our courses. It offers the island’s only par-70 layout, whose long par-4s, elevated greens and deep bunkers will test all facets of your game. Known as a great course for “faders” of the golf ball, the Fazio course features a unique double green at 11 and 16 that gives you a peek at what many experts believe is the toughest finishing stretch of holes on the island. These are a Fantastic Four featuring three par-4s over 400 yards from the white tees and a par-3 just a step less than 190.
Arthur Hills Golf Course
Lastly, you’ll find our Hills course, which is as much a tour of a wildlife sanctuary (keep your eye out for waterfowl and an alligator here or there) as a round of golf with its natural beauty. There are those who say they could play the Hills Course every day and never play it the same way twice with the diversity of strategies presented. PGA Tour star Bryce Molder shot a course-record 60 here while in college, while Tiger Woods took an 8 at the signature 17th, a par-4 that requires a drive and an approach over and around one of the many lagoons on the layout.
At all three courses, you’ll find five sets of tees, including family tees, to create an enjoyable, yet challenging round to players of all skill levels. You’ll also find three different putting surfaces: Champion Bermuda on the Jones Course, shade-tolerant Diamond Zoysia on the Fazio and TifDwarf Bermuda on the Hills Course.
Which of the courses will you take on? Do you dare try all three and 54 holes on one visit?! Let us know if you take the challenge and how you did!
