The low season in Lowcountry—there’s nothing quite like it! When the winter months roll around, Hilton Head Island never runs short of things to see and do. From outdoor adventures to fun festivals and events, a winter getaway promises all the best of summer, plus a few extra perks.
1. The Weather
Lower temperatures bring less humidity to the air around the island. From late November to early March, you can expect the temperature to hover around 64°F, rarely dipping down to the forties. Days are still just as sunny as summer, but less stifling. Definitely pack your shorts and t-shirts, but also bring along some warmer wardrobe pieces for after the sun sets. Speaking of sunsets…
2. Sunrises and Sunsets
Hilton Head Island is known for its breathtaking sunrises and sunsets—and in the winter months they get even more vibrant. Low humidity gives way to clear, crisp air that allows for reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows to shine brighter—here’s the science behind it. To catch a stunning sunrise, rent a bike and cruise along the east side of the island in the morning. For sunsets, dine al fresco at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina for some of the very best.
3. Pet-Friendly Vacations
Want to bring your four-legged family members along on your Hilton Head Island vacation? Winter is the perfect time to do just that. Not only will Fido enjoy those cooler temperatures, there are no restrictions for dogs on the island’s beaches during low season. Browse our pet-friendly vacation homes and villas here.
4. The Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival
Authentic Lowcountry cuisine is paired perfectly with wines from around the world at this festival that’s a must for any foodie. From March 11 through 17, festival events are held all around the island to mark the unofficial end of winter. On Thursday’s Sip ‘N Stroll, grab a glass of wine and browse the sales and discounts at the shops around the Harbour Town Yacht Basin. Go big at Friday’s Grand Tasting, and sample over 250 wines and delicious bites at Saturday’s Public Tasting.
5. The Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival
What could be better than seven days of seafood? From February 18 – 24, sip, shuck, and savor your way through a series of incredible events including an oyster roast, a big barbeque, champagne brunch, plus the much-anticipated James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour. Book a three-day package at Palmetto Dunes and you’ll get VIP tickets to headline events, villa accommodations, and much more.
6. The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra
The winter season of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra promises a sophisticated, special night out during your winter getaway. Enjoy the sounds of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Haydn and more surrounded by the stunning architecture and sublime acoustics of the First Presbyterian Church. Special features include ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, featuring all of your holiday favorites, and Coastal Traditions—a showcase of Lowcountry music, stories, and dance. View the orchestra’s performance schedule here.
7. Holiday Fun
We think “the most wonderful time of year” is even better around here. Hilton Head Island offers tons of holiday fun with no shovel or snow tires required! Ditch the big box stores and head to Coligny Beach for Black Friday deals from local vendors, and keep kids entertained with wagon rides and scavenger hunts. For some seasonal sparkle, head to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina to see boats bedecked with Christmas lights. Need to work off some of that holiday feasting? The Jingle Jingle 5K run is perfect for a little outdoor fun.
8. Water Wonderland
No snow? No problem! Warm temperatures are perfect for all kinds of aquatic adventures on Hilton Head Island. Paddleboard or kayak along the lazy Skull Creek for a leisurely day, or if it wouldn’t be winter without some kind of skiing, strap on some water skis and zoom around at high speed. Hit the open water on a fishing charter, or get your sea legs with a sailing lesson for even more fun this winter.
9. Winter Wildlife
Gators tend to hibernate in winter, but much of the island’s wildlife actually becomes more active and easier to spot from late December to early March. Head to Fish Haul Creek Park beachfront at low tide and you’ll be treated to flocks of migratory shorebirds including curlew, dunlin, dowitcher, godwit, red knot, and willet. Pickney Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to colonies of larger birds like egrets and herons, while the waters all around the island are prime for spotting playful dolphins.
10. Golf Galore
The low season means fewer golfers on our courses, giving you more time to perfect your swing and take in the exceptional natural beauty that surrounds you while you play. With three iconic courses on our resort, you won’t have to go far for an award-winning golf experience. Soak in stunning sea views on the Robert Trent Jones course—considered the best in the southeast—challenge yourself on the final four holes of the George Fazio Course, or try the shot-maker’s favorite Arthur Hills Course that perfectly blends in the beauty of the Lowcountry. Try them all with one of our incredible golf packages.

If there’s one thing that signals summer at Palmetto Dunes, it’s the bustling patio at The Dunes House. This exclusive beachfront restaurant is open to guests and residents of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and is the place to be for stunning views, easy summer eats, and a good time.
Whether you’re grabbing a light lunch before hitting the beach, or enjoying live music on a warm, summer night, or swinging by for one of The Dunes House’s epic Lowcountry Boils, you’ll love the casual, laidback atmosphere, frozen cocktails, and friendly service.
The Dunes House is open for lunch and dinner, weather permitting. Its patio is extra large because it has to be—all of the cooking is done in The Dunes House’s outdoor kitchen. So even if you stop by for a casual drink, we bet that once the smell of the grill hits your nose, you’ll be reaching for the food menu in no time.
There’s limited on-site parking at The Dunes House so it’s no wonder that many prefer to get there by bike. Between April 1 and September 30, you also have the option of taking the free Dunes Buggy shuttle to and from The Dunes House, for the ultimate convenience. Although, once you’re there, relaxing under the shade of an umbrella (or soaking up the sun) and taking in the sights and sounds of Palmetto Dunes’ beautiful sandy beach just steps away, we bet you won’t want to leave.
When you’re working in an outdoor kitchen, the grill is your star player—and boy, do the chefs at The Dunes House know how to grill! Their fish tacos are legendary, the burgers grilled to perfection, and their Carolina BBQ chicken sandwich has just the right amount of sweet and heat.
Looking for something a little lighter? Grab a salad topped with grilled shrimp or share a plate of nachos. For those who are on a family getaway, there’s even a special menu just for kids! The Dunes House also offers catering for special events, making it the perfect venue for a family reunion, beachfront wedding, or corporate event.
The only thing that rivals the incredible beachside food menu at The Dunes House is their drinks menu! It’s definitely one of our favorite places to grab a drink. Craving an ice-cold beer on a hot afternoon? The Dunes House offers a selection of domestic, specialty, and seasonal selections.
If you really want to try what the bartenders at The Dunes House are known for, go for one of the frozen drinks. The frozen margaritas are blended with Sauza Gold Tequila and classic flavors, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, try one of the house specialties like the Tiger Paw or the Carolina Beach.
If you’re into more of a “stirred, not shaken” kind of cocktail, try the Ruby Mule or any of their cocktails on the rocks.
And, since we're in the South, you can bet there's tea on the menu if you're looking for a Lowcountry sip that's non-alcoholic.
Did you know that there are special events happening at The Dunes House almost every day of the month? Live local entertainment livens up the atmosphere every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights during peak season. If you’re visiting in the summer, swing by on Wednesday for a treat! From Memorial Day through to the end of August, Wednesdays are Lobster Night when they serve up fresh lobster dinners with all the fixings. Looking for an authentic Lowcountry dining experience? The Lowcountry Boils at The Dunes House are a must! They take place on Saturday nights throughout the summer. Check the latest events calendar to see what’s going on.
When it comes to casual beachside dining and laidback Lowcountry entertainment, The Dunes House is the place to be! What’s your favorite thing about The Dunes House? Tell us in the comments! And don’t forget to share your Dunes House photos with us on social media using #PalmettoDunes.

Travel & Leisure Magazine has released its annual World’s Best Awards, and guests voted Hilton Head the Best Island in the Continental U.S for the 3rd year in a row! We’re thrilled, and not surprised. If you’ve ever been to Hilton Head Island you know just how spectacular a destination it is! We hear it from guests all the time! To celebrate this incredible accolade, we’re listing off 10 reasons why Hilton Head is the best island.
10. The Convenience
With two airports servicing Hilton Head Island, plenty of non-stop flights, and easy land access, getting to Hilton Head is as easy as a South Carolina breeze! This year Air Canada launched non-stop service from Toronto, Canada so even our neighbors to the north can hop on a plane to our slice of paradise!
9. The Adventure
Hilton Head Island offers the perfect setting for outdoor adventure. Hit the open water on a sailboat, kayak, or fishing charter, or enjoy the quiet calm of the Palmetto Dunes Lagoon. Bike trails, pillage like pirates, zip-line across the sky, or zoom full speed ahead on a catamaran built for two! There’s no end to thrilling outdoor activities on Hilton Head.
8. The Wildlife
Our scenic natural surroundings provide more than just stunning photo opportunities—they’re home to a vibrant and varied array of wildlife, too! You could see dolphins, sharks, fish, oysters, birds, deer, even gators on your Hilton Head Island vacation.
7. The Weather
We’re fortunate, on Hilton Head Island, to have some of the best weather around! Not only can we golf year round, we enjoy comfortable temperatures regardless of the season. During the summer months, temperatures soar as high as 89 degrees and even in winter the temperature hovers around 60.
6. The Laidback Lifestyle
There’s something incredibly relaxing about the laidback way of life in Lowcountry. We’re never in a rush down here! Taking the time to enjoy the sunshine, beautiful surroundings, and each other’s company is part of Hilton Head’s charm.
5. The Family-Friendly Atmosphere
Whether it’s the vacation rentals appointed with every convenience and comfort of home, the kids’ camps, family-friendly restaurants, or simply our quiet atmosphere, Hilton Head offers something for the entire family to enjoy! We have guests who have been visiting with their families for years, and kids who have grown up reveling in the fun of a Hilton Head Island vacation.
4. The Food
There’s nothing quite like good old-fashioned Southern cookin’, and no shortage of it on Hilton Head Island. From local staples like oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils to Southern classics like shrimp n’ grits and fried chicken, your taste buds are in for a treat when you’re dining in Hilton Head.
3. The People
Over and over, we hear from guests who just can’t get over how friendly and helpful everyone is on Hilton Head Island! We think you’ll find that locals are courteous and kind—and up for a good time! Join us at Harbourfest or down at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina for happy hour and you’ll see just what we mean.
2. The Golfing
Hilton Head Island is practically synonymous with good golfing, and it’s no wonder! With over 20 championship golf courses, including our three award-winning golf courses at Palmetto Dunes! There are courses for every experience level and playing style, and some of the best PGA-certified instructors to help you improve all aspects of your game.
1. The Beaches
If there’s one thing on Hilton Head Island that will take your breath away, it’s our beautiful beaches! Year round our guests are wowed by Hilton Head’s white sand, calm surf, stunning sunrises and beautiful water. Whether you’re biking along the water’s edge, taking a surf lesson, or simply enjoying the view, we think you’ll agree that spending the day at the beach on Hilton Head Island is top notch.
Sunset strolls on the beach? Afternoon paddles? A round or two of pickleball? We’ve consulted the stars, touched base with the planets, and we’re ready to share with you what summer 2018 has in store for you!
Aries, your passion, competitive spirit, and unrelenting energy keep you on the go. Non-stop. 365 days of the year. This summer, our challenge for you is easy: Take a break! Use your impulsive nature to book a last-minute beach vacation, grab a beach read, and park yourself in the dunes.
Recent planetary transitions might have inspired you to look inward and focus on self-expression and creative pursuits. We know it’s a lost cause to get you to change your mind when its set, so our suggestion for Taurus is more of a reminder: Don’t forget to spend time with your loved ones this summer. Use the sunshine and take some time to make memories with the ones who matter most, whether it’s around the dining table or by the pool.
Gemini, our favorite Twins, this summer is all about letting your social side shine. Put yourself in situations where you’ll learn new things and exchange ideas with others. Like, a boat tour, a dinner party, or a sunset cruise. Keep your nerves and indecision at bay this summer, and it’ll be one for the books.
You’ve been going through a major cycle of change for years—since 2011 in fact! Starting in June, you’ll see this rapid pace slow down (finally) and we encourage you to take some time to get to know yourself better. We know this isn’t the first thing on Cancer’s “Things I Love To Do” list. Embrace it. This summer is all about going deep and centering yourself now that the storm has passed. Might we a contemplative bike ride to start?
In a perfect world, Leo, you would love everyone and they would love you right back. You’re the first to double tap a pal’s Instagram post (and you expect the same in return). This summer is all about trying new things and keeping that Instagram feed up-to-date. Get up a little earlier and catch a sunrise. Try a pickleball match. Do what you have to do to keep yourself in the spotlight you love.
Modest, but hard working. Precise, yet adaptable. Virgo, it’s time you stop channeling attention into the projects and people you spend so much time improving and focus on you! We don’t necessarily mean spa days, either (though, of course, they’re always encouraged). We think you’re focused energy is best put to use in a new athletic pursuit, which can be just as therapeutic. Try zipping down the beach on two wheels, or learning to surf.
Decisions aren’t your favorite thing, Libra, and this summer we say embrace it. Book a few long weekends on a whim, find yourself a comfortable homebase, and then let the winds decide what to do.
Jupiter, the planet of luck and inspiration, is moving through Scorpio until November 2018. To this we say: Milk it for all its worth! Now is the time to take risks and chase thrills. Feel the need for speed on a CraigCat. Get a bird’s-eye view on a parasailing adventure. Soar through the trees on a zipline. The choice is yours!
Saturn, the planet concerned with teaching karma (aka “no fun”), has finally skedaddled out of your sign after 28-years. Sagittarius, it’s time to celebrate! This summer, we see a lot of travel and adventuring in your future. Road trips, impromptu beach days, and afternoons on the links are all up for grabs.
Serious Saturn hopped right out of Sagittarius and landed right in your lap, Capricorn. Which means this summer is all about process and methodology—something your responsible, serious self knows and loves all too well. Apply your self-discipline to your vacation planning, book early, catch all of the summer deals you can find, and your summer will go exactly how you planned it—music to your ears!
You’re comfortable overthinking and detaching yourself from the here and now, but, dear Aquarius, you have to let that go this summer. Your best bet for the best summer yet is to dive head first into new and fun experiences. Try new things! Taste new flavors! Just make sure you bring a friend or two along for the ride.
Neptune, your ruling planet of inspiration and dreams, will be floating on through Pisces this summer. And, while most of us would flounder underwater, you are going to glide right through it! We see a lot of boating and kayaking in your summer vacation because of Neptune’s transition. This is a great time for you to bring family and friends along the ride on vacation, so you can soak up the memories like the human sponge you are.
Regardless of your zodiac sign, we’re feeling pretty good about a trip to Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort being in your future. Whether you’re booking well in advance, or looking for a last-minute getaway, consult our packages and specials before you book to make your stay even sweeter.

Every good vacation needs a great reading list. A solid beach read is an essential part of your beach day packing, like remembering to bring sunscreen or a towel.
Palmetto Dunes is situated on three miles of pristine beachfront, ideal for swimming, surfing, or just lounging—with that great book you remembered to pack.
So, what should you be reading this summer? We’ve picked out ten beach reads for 2018 that are perfect for every kind of vacationer.
For the Whole Book Club
Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal
This novel about female friendship and cultural identities will be a hit with the whole book club. In fact, Reese Witherspoon recently selected it for her own club. It’s a playful yet thought provoking read that will leave you and your pals with lots to discuss.
For the Funny Fiction Lover
Less by Andrew Sean Greer
This uproarious novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and will have you in stitches on the beach. In it, a failed novelist embarks on a round-the-world trip in order to politely avoid accepting an invitation to his ex-boyfriend’s wedding. This bittersweet love story is the perfect summer beach read for anyone looking for a laugh.
For the Observational Comedian
Calypso by David Sedaris
If humorous memoirs are more your style, look no further than the master himself, David Sedaris. Sedaris’s latest offering, Calypso, features the wry, witty observational humor he’s known for. The stories in this collection often center around the time his family spends at a beach house on the Carolina coast, making it a particularly apt read for a Hilton Head Island vacation.
For the True Crime Junkie
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara
If your smartphone is loaded up with true crime podcasts like My Favorite Murder and Serial, then you’ll want the latest and greatest from the genre on your reading list as well. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is being heralded as a masterpiece of true crime writing. In her book, author McNamara investigated the famous “Golden State Killer” and just may have contributed to his surprising arrest in April of 2018, decades after the crimes were committed. True crime junkies won’t be able to put this one down.
For the Short Story Lover
You Think It, I’ll Say It by Curtis Sittenfeld
Short stories can be easily put down and picked back up again, making them perfect for busy vacationers. This is novelist Curtis Sittenfeld’s first collection of short stories, and they deliver the same colorful characters and sharp, clever observations as her acclaimed novels.
For the Science Buff
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte
Though this book will certainly resonate with science lovers, don’t mistake it for a dry textbook style piece of non-fiction. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs is science, but it’s also storytelling. It’s a biography at heart. The book artfully traces a 200-million-year history and connects it with modern-day accounts of the real-life work of its paleontologist author.
For the Hopeless Romantic
A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza
This sweet story of an estranged family reunited for a wedding will appeal to the romantic souls on the beach. In her debut novel, Mirza tells the saga of a Muslim Indian-American family’s bonds and betrayals. Though the story spans decades, it is also intimate and captivating. Fun fact: this is the first book published under celebrity Sarah Jessica Parker’s new imprint, SJP for Hogarth.
For the Southern Belle
Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon
This book is perfect for southern belles, and those inspired by the South following a relaxing Lowcountry vacation. This frothy, lighthearted book offers advice on everything from entertaining, to home décor, to how to style one’s hair—the Southern way.
For the Pop Culture Junkie
You’re on an Airplane by Parker Posey
If you’re the type of beachgoer who usually packs a few glossy magazines or tabloids in their bag, then this fun, funny book from actress Parker Posey is for you. The indie film darling’s memoir is as offbeat as her persona. Hilarious stories of her childhood, hobbies, and Hollywood life are told as though you, the reader, have Posey as an airplane seatmate.
For the Poetry Lover
Yesterday I Was the Moon by Noor Unnahar
Personal, insightful poetry has experienced a resurgence in recent years, thanks to works like Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur and Love Her Wild by Atticus. If you liked those collections, pick up Noor Unnahar’s debut collection. You’ll love soaking up each beautiful word while you soak up your beautiful surroundings on Hilton Head Island.
