1. Myth: You go on golf trips to get away from your family.
Fact: You don’t go on golf trips to get away from your family. And if you did, you wouldn’t dare say it out loud. No, the more diplomatic approach involves talking about bonding time with your friends, badly needed relaxation (and exercise!) on the golf course and a healthy dose of culture away from the course. And for all that … Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has got you well covered. Three award-winning golf courses designed by a trio of the game’s legends: Robert Trent Jones golf course, Arthur Hills golf course and George Fazio course. And plenty of culture including the Mediterranean-style Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina that features premium waterfront shopping and dining — everything from upscale clothing boutiques to fine art galleries, elegant restaurants and casual pubs overlooking the marina and waterfront — and is home to a wide variety of charters including nature cruises, dolphin tours, sport crabbing and fishing.
2. Myth: On a golf trip, all you will have time for is hitting the links, eating (and drinking), and sleeping.
Fact: At Palmetto Dunes, we know this isn’t the case. Our three courses are so conveniently located and there are sooo many other things to enjoy around here. Named to the top 25 World’s Best Family Getaways by Travel + Leisure, the resort features not only a trio of world-class golf courses, but also an award-winning tennis center, an 11-mile inland salt-water lagoon system for kayaking and fishing, and Hilton Head Outfitters for bike rentals, canoes, kayaks, fishing and much more. Play More. Do More. Get More. That’s the promise Palmetto Dunes fulfills every day for thousands of vacationers, golfers, tennis players, beach lovers, groups and nature lovers.
3. Myth: On a golf trip, the comfort of your accommodations isn’t all that important.
Fact: Wrong. With all you’re going to be doing at Palmetto Dunes, you’ll want nothing more when you hit the hay than to enjoy a comfortable, peaceful night’s sleep. For short-term and long-term accommodations, Palmetto Dunes proudly offers the island’s premier selection of vacation rental properties from oceanfront hotel rooms to spacious villas overlooking the harbour, lagoon, fairways or beach.
4. Myth: You go on a golf trip to play golf, not get lessons.
Fact: Well, at Palmetto Dunes you can do both. Former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver has served 13 years as Palmetto Dunes’ highly respected Director of Golf Instruction. One of the resort's popular attractions is the complimentary Monday golf exhibition and clinic, where participants experience Weaver’s effective and entertaining style. The weekly event is hands on, interactive and prizes are given. Last year, his colleagues voted Weaver as Golf Digest magazine’s No. 2 Instructor in South Carolina and he was named the Hilton Head Island PGA chapter's “Teacher of the Year.” At Hilton Head Family Golf School, Weaver and his team present a holistic, keep-it-simple approach to learning golf. The resort atmosphere is service oriented, classy and relaxed. The coaching style is the same, making many students much better golfers. Private lessons at PD include take-home video analysis, emailed notes and practice before and after.
5. Myth: People take golf trips to remote locales such as Bandon Dunes and Pinehurst because there’s nothing else to do other than play golf … and that’s the way it should be.
Fact: We happen to think that’s NOT the way it should be. Palmetto Dunes is nestled in the heart of Hilton Head Island and surrounded by most anything and everything fun you can think of to do during the day AND at night. Hilton Head Island has long been renowned as a family friendly destination. The readers of Travel + Leisure magazine agree, naming Hilton Head as 2016’s “No. 1 Island in the U.S.” in the magazine’s annual “World’s Best” survey.
6. Myth: On a golf trip, you need to “dance with the one who brought you” … in other words, bring your own golf clubs, no matter how old and outdated they are, because they’re what you’re accustomed to playing.
Fact: Well, maybe some places, but not Palmetto Dunes. Don’t want to lug your golf clubs on your trip? The Palmetto Dunes Rental Club Program is a far cry from the worn-out, no name sets available elsewhere. Only full sets of the very latest clubs from top brands Taylor Made, Nike, and Cobra are offered to visiting golfers in need of equipment. Or, if you’ve been giving thought to a new set of sticks, Palmetto Dunes now offers the expertise of SwingFit, headed by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” SwingFit’s approach includes more than 20,000 total club and shaft combinations, including Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Mizuno, Edel, Fujikura, Matrix, Aerotec Steelfiber, Nipon, KBS, TrueTemper, Accra, Paderson and others — using a data-driven process to improve performance by identifying the ideal combination of club, shaft and build specifications for each golfer. Another important feature of the new service at Palmetto Dunes: With on-site inventory and a team of skilled builders, many clubs can be delivered within 48 hours.
7. Myth: Golf trips are fun, but they tend to be very expensive, too.
Fact: Not necessarily. At Palmetto Dunes, the arrival of spring allows golfers to begin scheduling their next golf getaway while also saving money through the resort’s numerous, attractive golf stay-and-play packages. For guests who booked their accommodations directly through Palmetto Dunes Resort Reservations, additional packages and specials are available. In addition if you’re with your family, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate.
Hilton Head Island has everything you need for the perfect vacation! Beautiful beaches, warm weather, friendly people, stunning scenery, top-notch golf, there’s no end to all of the things you can experience! But there are some things that you can only experience at Palmetto Dunes. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your Palmetto Dunes vacation so you can cross these one-of-a-kind activities off your list.
1. Outdoor Pickleball
Pickleball is one of America’s fastest growing sports. This fast-paced paddle racket sport is often played in gymnasiums but at Palmetto Dunes you can play it outdoors in the South Carolina sunshine! Our tennis center offers 8 outdoor Pickleball courts and a variety of round robins, clinics and lessons for players of all ages and skill levels.
2. Lagoon Fishing
The man-made lagoon at Palmetto Dunes is one of our most unique features. It not only helped create the dunes our beach is famous for, it’s a vibrant ecosystem that weaves its way past our golf courses and through the property. The lagoon is home to a variety of fish and the experts at Palmetto Lagoon Fishing Charters have all of the gear and knowledge you need to land a catch!
3. See a Mermaid
The waters of Hilton Head Island are home to an astounding array of marine life, but, if you head out from Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina at Palmetto Dunes, you just might see the most elusive and mystical marine creature of all: the mermaid! This one-of-a-kind experience is a memorable family excursion and a fun experience for kids of all ages.
4. Fried Chicken at The General Store
If you don’t think the fried chicken at The General Store is an experience then you haven’t tried it! It’s no secret that fried chicken is a staple of Southern cuisine, and the homemade recipe that’s made daily at The General Store is crispy, juicy, and just plain delicious!
5. Fireworks at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina
Summer in Hilton Head isn’t complete without the weekly fireworks display at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina! Join us throughout the summer for HarbourFest, and experience all that Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina has to offer, plus live music, family entertainment, and of course fireworks!
There’s no doubt that Palmetto Dunes is the perfect place for a family vacation. Vacation rentals and vacation homes provide space for everyone, as well as the convenience of a cooking space, and in some cases even an on-site pool. Hilton Head Outfitters offers bike equipment in all sizes so you can be sure your little ones are cycling safely. Best of all, Palmetto Dunes offers some fun activities and beautiful outdoor spaces to explore. Don’t believe us? Check out our Family Itinerary!
There’s no better way to explore Hilton Head Island than by bike, so first stop on our Family Itinerary is Hilton Head Outfitters! Did you know that you can reserve your bike in advance and they will deliver your bike right to your rental unit? Mine was waiting for me when I arrived, ready to roll as soon as I had settled in and wanted to head out exploring. If your child is still learning to bike, rent a kid’s beach cruiser with training wheels or a tag-a-long bike attachment. Child seats and kiddie carts allow even the smallest of your brood to enjoy the ride.
To start my day with an unbeatable breakfast, I headed to The General Store. This bustling hub is an excellent starting point for a day of adventure. After fueling up on eggs, bacon and grits, I headed off to Hilton Head Outfitters for a morning of paddling and nature exploring on Palmetto Dunes’ lagoon.
The man-made lagoon at Palmetto Dunes is ideal for novice paddlers. No large boats are allowed in the lagoon, and any motorboats must be electric in order to preserve the lagoon’s pristine environment. This makes for an incredibly peaceful and calm paddle. One of the things I’ll never forget from my kayak trip was the wildlife I was able to witness up close and personal! Brave baitfish leaping out of the water. Cormorants drying their wings, egrets and heron patrolling the water’s edge, turtles sunning, even a small herd of deer enjoying some shade by the lagoon!
A morning of cycling and water sports drums up quite the appetite! For a Mexican feast fit for a family, we dined at San Miguel’s. Complete with a kid’s menu that doubles as a coloring page, this Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina restaurant is a delightful place to stop for a family meal. (And the queso dip was delicious!)
One of the most exciting items that is included in our Family Itinerary is a dolphin watching tour! I couldn’t wait to get back out onto the open water to see what other wildlife I could find. There are some excellent charters and cruises available at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, and many of them can even be booked online! We boarded the Dolphin Seafari and set sail. This time of year you’re less likely to see as many dolphins as you can see in the height of summer, but we were fortunate enough to see a few as we traveled out of Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and into Broad Creek. The crew on Dolphin Seafari were really knowledgeable. I learned all about local shellfish and fish, and was told that in the summer months they’ll pull up local sea creatures to create an onboard aquarium for kids to enjoy! If you keep your eyes peeled, you may even catch glimpse of a mermaid sunning on a rock while cruising with Dolphin Seafari. What fun!
The winner of our Family Itinerary will receive a dining certificate so you can wrap up a busy day of family fun with some delicious eats! I headed to Big Jim’s. The convenient location, homemade Lowcountry cooking, and casual atmosphere made the perfect recipe for an easy and delightful dinner.
By now your kids might be worn out, but if not I highly recommend an evening walk—or bike ride—on the beach. As for me, I headed to my vacation rental where I relaxed while watching a DVD and went to bed in anticipation of another exciting and eventful day at Palmetto Dunes.

Seasons Greetings from all of us at Palmetto Dunes, and happy shopping!
Heading on a vacation to Hilton Head Island this winter? Take your four-legged friend with you! At Palmetto Dunes, all family members are welcome. After all, what’s a vacation without your very best friend?
To get the most out of your stay at Palmetto Dunes, we’ve compiled a few pet-friendly pointers to help you and your furry friend have the vacation of a lifetime!
1. Double check your pet’s paperwork.
Before you leave, take a look through all of your pet’s paperwork and make sure they have the appropriate veterinary travel documents.
2. Do a medical check.
Ensure all required injections are current. If your pet is on any medications, be sure to visit the vet prior to your trip so that any necessary supplies are in order.
3. Make a reservation.
Book a Palmetto Dunes property fit for you and Fido. From one-bedroom condos to spacious villas, the perfect spot for pets up to 40 pounds are available seasonally.
4. Call ahead.
Be prepared! We’re here to help with any questions you have or any special needs your pet may require, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch prior to your visit at 866-650-4130.
1. Use a crate.
Whether you’re driving or flying, it’s best to use a crate for safe transport. To help your pet adjust to their crate, let them enter it on their own, and consider tossing in their favorite treat and/or toy.
2. Review policies.
If you’re traveling by air, be sure to review the airline’s pet policies, as they’ll likely have specific rules and protocols to get your pet ready.
3. Plan mealtimes.
Some pups can be sensitive to motion, so help make things a little easier on their stomach by serving their meal well before transit (4-6 hours is ideal).
4. Schedule in activity.
Let your furry friend run or take them for a long walk prior to crate time – a tired dog is much more likely to remain calm during transit.
1. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings.
Identify parks, paths, and other locations to get some exercise with your dog. Your front desk staff can point you in the direction of Hilton Head Beaches, which are dog friendly in the mornings and evenings, and a must for your vacation to-do list.
2. Explore the new environment.
When you arrive, be sure to take your pup out for a walk. It’s the perfect way to explore, and it helps you both relax and adjust to your new surroundings.
3. Keep your schedule.
Pets thrive on healthy routines so do your best to keep to your regular walking and meal times throughout your trip.
4. Create a comfortable space.
Make your pet at home with familiar items such as their bedding or favorite toy. This will instantly help them to feel more secure and relaxed.
Now that you’ve made all of the necessary arrangements, and booked your pet-friendly Palmetto Dunes vacation rental, it’s time to relax and enjoy your vacation!

There are few experiences as authentically Lowcountry as the Oyster Roast. Cooking outdoors, good friends, fresh local seafood, the Oyster Roast is our way of ushering in the fall and winter, and of having the kind of casual good time one can only enjoy on Hilton Head Island.
If you’d like to bring some Lowcountry flair to your next gathering, host your own oyster roast! Here’s how:
Get some fresh oysters. On Hilton Head Island, and throughout the Lowcountry, clusters of oysters are typically used for oyster roasts. Around here, the oysters are often so fresh they’re still covered in mud! However, individual oysters are more likely what you'll be able to find at home. Plan for 10-12 oysters per person.
Get fired up. Open fire pits may be the tradition for our oyster roasts, but your backyard grill will do just fine. Place a large iron plate or piece of sheet metal on top of your grill and crank up the heat. Test your temperature by sprinkling a few drops of water onto your piece of metal—if it sizzles upon contact you’ll know it’s time to…
Get cooking! Lay your oysters onto your iron plate and cover with a thoroughly damp piece of burlap. It’s best to avoid any synthetic fibers, so make sure your burlap is the real deal. For added flavor, douse your burlap with some local beer.
Get steamy. As soon as your damp burlap hits the heat, it should start to steam. If, as you cook the burlap starts to dry and the steam starts to die down, dump a liberal amount of ice on top of your burlap oyster pile. As it melts, it will create steam to help the oysters cook. The oysters are essentially cooking in their own juices, which is what makes them so incredibly delicious! The steam from the burlap and ice helps this process along.
Get shucking. After 8-10 minutes your oyster shells should have opened slightly, meaning they’re ready to eat! Use a shovel to take them off the grill and Let them cool for a couple of minutes before carefully shucking the oysters.
Now you’re ready to eat! Serve your oysters alongside saltine crackers, with cocktail sauce or fresh lemon juice, or, enjoy their succulent, briny flavor on its own. A Lowcountry oyster roast can last all night long, with pile after pile of delicious, steamed oysters being loaded on and off the grill.
Oyster roasts are a fantastic excuse to get a group of people together to enjoy simple Lowcountry cooking, fresh seafood, and good company. There’s no such thing as “too many people” at an oyster roast on Hilton Head Island. Don’t believe us? Come on down to The Dunes House on Saturday, November 26 for our annual Dunes House Oyster Roast! Live music, beer and menu specials, and of course, oysters, oysters and more oysters! Between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, call 843-686-9143.
There’s something very special about the Lowcountry lifestyle that defines coastal South Carolina. Lowcountry is more than a geographical region, it’s a unique way of living with a culture and cuisine all its own. It’s part of what makes a vacation at Palmetto Dunes so special, and it’s worth cultivating all year long!
Now that your summer vacation on Hilton Head Island has come to a close, and while you start planning your return trip to Palmetto Dunes, embrace our Lowcountry lifestyle with these easy tips.
Enjoy the small things in life.
Embracing the Lowcountry lifestyle is all about taking the time to enjoy the small things in life. It’s easy to stop and enjoy a stunning Hilton Head Island sunset or wake up early for a sunrise stroll on our white sand beaches while you’re in “vacation mode” at Palmetto Dunes, however, our busy lives and hectic schedules often push us through the day without so much as a pause.
Similarly, there’s nothing more pleasant for a Lowcountry local than a few quiet minutes sitting on a front porch. In fact, some residents would tell you it’s best to spend an afternoon just relaxing and enjoying the slow pace of life we have here on Hilton Head Island.
Cultivate the appreciation you feel while in the Lowcountry. Wake up a few minutes earlier to look out at the sky and take a deep breath. Enjoy the simple pleasure of that first sip of coffee in the morning. Take a walk after dinner and leave your cellphone at home. It just takes a few minutes’ pause to enjoy life’s small moments and feel as relaxed and laid back as a warm southern summer breeze.
Celebrate the great outdoors.

We think you’ll agree that the natural surroundings of Hilton Head Island are truly spectacular. Hilton Head Outfitters makes it easy to bike along the island’s white, sandy beaches and oak tree-lined streets, or paddle along the Palmetto Dunes lagoon system and other coastal inlets and estuaries. But just because you’re not enjoying all of the outdoor activities Palmetto Dunes has to offer doesn’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy nature in your neighborhood. Find a local park to visit on the weekend, or even take the time to enjoy the shade from a tree-lined boulevard in your town.
If you really want to surround yourself with the natural scenery of the Lowcountry, place a photo or piece of local art on your wall, so an escape to Hilton Head Island is a mere glance away. There are some incredible art galleries and artisans’ shops at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, so be sure to stop in on your next Palmetto Dunes vacation to pick a Hilton Head view to call your own.
Serve up some Lowcountry cuisine.

South Carolina Lowcountry has a unique cuisine with influences from North Africa, the Caribbean, and traditional Southern and Native American dishes. Inspired by the area’s agricultural history and coastal landscape, rice and seafood are staples found often in Lowcountry dishes.
There are plenty of ways to sample Lowcountry flavors at Palmetto Dunes. Try traditional shrimp’n grits or good old-fashioned Southern Barbecue at Big Jim’s, or head to Alexander’s Restaurant for Lowcountry crab cakes. End a day of exploring, shopping, and entertainment at Shelter Cove Harbour with gumbo and fresh oysters at Scott’s Fish Market or a decadent seafood entrée at Ela’s Blu Water Grille.
We know you'll be yearning for Hilton Head Island's Lowcountry fare, so why not embrace the Lowcountry lifestyle by indulging in some fresh seafood every now and again, or adding ‘peas and rice’ as a side dish at your next meal? A key ingredient of Lowcountry cooking is a casual approach. It's all about good ingredients and sharing a meal with good friends.
Get inspired by Lowcountry Architecture.
You may have noticed while biking around Hilton Head Island, that many of the houses have an architectural style all their own. This Lowcountry style of architecture dates back to the 1700s, and its features are rooted in practicality. Many homes are made of timber and constructed on pillars to keep the main floor away from rising tides, storm surges, and swampy land. Broad roofs and large, covered front porches are another signature of this style. Some of our rental vacation homes are built this way, and many feature large windows, another Lowcountry architectural signature that lets beautiful views and ocean breezes in, and warm air out.
While constructing a new porch may be unrealistic, simple touches of wood, sea-inspired accents, and a classic rocking chair by the window are easy ways to inject a bit of Lowcountry into your home décor.
Social media makes it easier than ever to stay connected to the Lowcountry vibes of Palmetto Dunes. Follow us on Twitter or Instagram to see glimpses of life on Hilton Head Island all throughout the year, right in the palm of your hand! Sign up for emails from us, and check our blog to keep tabs on what’s happening at the resort. You can even catch a glimpse of current weather conditions and Lowcountry views on our webcams!

The laidback atmosphere of the Lowcountry lifestyle is a huge part of life on Hilton Head Island and embracing this lifestyle is a sure fire way to bring some relaxing vacation vibes into your everyday life. Once you've embraced the Lowcountry lifestyle, you'll be more than ready for your next vacation to Palmetto Dunes.
