Travel & Leisure Magazine has released its annual World’s Best Awards, and guests voted Hilton Head the Best Island in the Continental U.S. Not only that, our Lowcountry slice of paradise was listed as the second best island in the world! We’re thrilled, and not surprised. If you’ve ever been to Hilton Head Island you know just how spectacular a destination it is! We hear it from guests all the time! To celebrate this incredible accolade, we’re listing off 10 reasons why Hilton Head is the best island.
10. The Convenience
With two airports servicing Hilton Head Island, plenty of non-stop flights, and easy land access, getting to Hilton Head is as easy as a South Carolina breeze! This year Air Canada launched non-stop service from Toronto, Canada so even our neighbors to the north can hop on a plane to our slice of paradise!
9. The Adventure
Hilton Head Island offers the perfect setting for outdoor adventure. Hit the open water on a sailboat, kayak, or fishing charter, or enjoy the quiet calm of the Palmetto Dunes Lagoon. Bike trails, pillage like pirates, zip-line across the sky, or zoom full speed ahead on a catamaran built for two! There’s no end to thrilling outdoor activities on Hilton Head.
8. The Wildlife
Our scenic natural surroundings provide more than just stunning photo opportunities—they’re home to a vibrant and varied array of wildlife, too! You could see dolphins, sharks, fish, oysters, birds, deer, even gators on your Hilton Head Island vacation.
7. The Weather
We’re fortunate, on Hilton Head Island, to have some of the best weather around! Not only can we golf year round, we enjoy comfortable temperatures regardless of the season. During the summer months, temperatures soar as high as 89 degrees and even in winter the temperature hovers around 60.
6. The Laidback Lifestyle
There’s something incredibly relaxing about the laidback way of life in Lowcountry. We’re never in a rush down here! Taking the time to enjoy the sunshine, beautiful surroundings, and each other’s company is part of Hilton Head’s charm.
5. The Family-Friendly Atmosphere
Whether it’s the vacation rentals appointed with every convenience and comfort of home, the kids’ camps, family-friendly restaurants, or simply our quiet atmosphere, Hilton Head offers something for the entire family to enjoy! We have guests who have been visiting with their families for years, and kids who have grown up reveling in the fun of a Hilton Head Island vacation.
4. The Food
There’s nothing quite like good old-fashioned Southern cookin’, and no shortage of it on Hilton Head Island. From local staples like oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils to Southern classics like shrimp n’ grits and fried chicken, your taste buds are in for a treat when you’re dining in Hilton Head.
3. The People
Over and over, we hear from guests who just can’t get over how friendly and helpful everyone is on Hilton Head Island! We think you’ll find that locals are courteous and kind—and up for a good time! Join us at Harbourfest or down at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina for happy hour and you’ll see just what we mean.
2. The Golfing
Hilton Head Island is practically synonymous with good golfing, and it’s no wonder! With over 20 championship golf courses, including our three award-winning golf courses at Palmetto Dunes! There are courses for every experience level and playing style, and some of the best PGA-certified instructors to help you improve all aspects of your game.
1. The Beaches
If there’s one thing on Hilton Head Island that will take your breath away, it’s our beautiful beaches! Year round our guests are wowed by Hilton Head’s white sand, calm surf, stunning sunrises and beautiful water. Whether you’re biking along the water’s edge, taking a surf lesson, or simply enjoying the view, we think you’ll agree that spending the day at the beach on Hilton Head Island is top notch.

Hilton Head Island has everything you need for the perfect vacation! Beautiful beaches, warm weather, friendly people, stunning scenery, top-notch golf, there’s no end to all of the things you can experience! But there are some things that you can only experience at Palmetto Dunes. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your Palmetto Dunes vacation so you can cross these one-of-a-kind activities off your list.
1. Outdoor Pickleball
Pickleball is one of America’s fastest growing sports. This fast-paced paddle racket sport is often played in gymnasiums but at Palmetto Dunes you can play it outdoors in the South Carolina sunshine! Our tennis center offers 8 outdoor Pickleball courts and a variety of round robins, clinics and lessons for players of all ages and skill levels.
2. Lagoon Fishing
The man-made lagoon at Palmetto Dunes is one of our most unique features. It not only helped create the dunes our beach is famous for, it’s a vibrant ecosystem that weaves its way past our golf courses and through the property. The lagoon is home to a variety of fish and the experts at Palmetto Lagoon Fishing Charters have all of the gear and knowledge you need to land a catch!
3. See a Mermaid
The waters of Hilton Head Island are home to an astounding array of marine life, but, if you head out from Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina at Palmetto Dunes, you just might see the most elusive and mystical marine creature of all: the mermaid! This one-of-a-kind experience is a memorable family excursion and a fun experience for kids of all ages.
4. Fried Chicken at The General Store
If you don’t think the fried chicken at The General Store is an experience then you haven’t tried it! It’s no secret that fried chicken is a staple of Southern cuisine, and the homemade recipe that’s made daily at The General Store is crispy, juicy, and just plain delicious!
5. Fireworks at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina
Summer in Hilton Head isn’t complete without the weekly fireworks display at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina! Join us throughout the summer for HarbourFest, and experience all that Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina has to offer, plus live music, family entertainment, and of course fireworks!
There’s no doubt that Palmetto Dunes is the perfect place for a family vacation. Vacation rentals and vacation homes provide space for everyone, as well as the convenience of a cooking space, and in some cases even an on-site pool. Hilton Head Outfitters offers bike equipment in all sizes so you can be sure your little ones are cycling safely. Best of all, Palmetto Dunes offers some fun activities and beautiful outdoor spaces to explore. Don’t believe us? Check out our Family Itinerary!
There’s no better way to explore Hilton Head Island than by bike, so first stop on our Family Itinerary is Hilton Head Outfitters! Did you know that you can reserve your bike in advance and they will deliver your bike right to your rental unit? Mine was waiting for me when I arrived, ready to roll as soon as I had settled in and wanted to head out exploring. If your child is still learning to bike, rent a kid’s beach cruiser with training wheels or a tag-a-long bike attachment. Child seats and kiddie carts allow even the smallest of your brood to enjoy the ride.
To start my day with an unbeatable breakfast, I headed to The General Store. This bustling hub is an excellent starting point for a day of adventure. After fueling up on eggs, bacon and grits, I headed off to Hilton Head Outfitters for a morning of paddling and nature exploring on Palmetto Dunes’ lagoon.
The man-made lagoon at Palmetto Dunes is ideal for novice paddlers. No large boats are allowed in the lagoon, and any motorboats must be electric in order to preserve the lagoon’s pristine environment. This makes for an incredibly peaceful and calm paddle. One of the things I’ll never forget from my kayak trip was the wildlife I was able to witness up close and personal! Brave baitfish leaping out of the water. Cormorants drying their wings, egrets and heron patrolling the water’s edge, turtles sunning, even a small herd of deer enjoying some shade by the lagoon!
A morning of cycling and water sports drums up quite the appetite! For a Mexican feast fit for a family, we dined at San Miguel’s. Complete with a kid’s menu that doubles as a coloring page, this Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina restaurant is a delightful place to stop for a family meal. (And the queso dip was delicious!)
One of the most exciting items that is included in our Family Itinerary is a dolphin watching tour! I couldn’t wait to get back out onto the open water to see what other wildlife I could find. There are some excellent charters and cruises available at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, and many of them can even be booked online! We boarded the Dolphin Seafari and set sail. This time of year you’re less likely to see as many dolphins as you can see in the height of summer, but we were fortunate enough to see a few as we traveled out of Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and into Broad Creek. The crew on Dolphin Seafari were really knowledgeable. I learned all about local shellfish and fish, and was told that in the summer months they’ll pull up local sea creatures to create an onboard aquarium for kids to enjoy! If you keep your eyes peeled, you may even catch glimpse of a mermaid sunning on a rock while cruising with Dolphin Seafari. What fun!
The winner of our Family Itinerary will receive a dining certificate so you can wrap up a busy day of family fun with some delicious eats! I headed to Big Jim’s. The convenient location, homemade Lowcountry cooking, and casual atmosphere made the perfect recipe for an easy and delightful dinner.
By now your kids might be worn out, but if not I highly recommend an evening walk—or bike ride—on the beach. As for me, I headed to my vacation rental where I relaxed while watching a DVD and went to bed in anticipation of another exciting and eventful day at Palmetto Dunes.

I started the day on the Robert Trent Jones course. I’d definitely recommend an early tee time! By the time we got to the 10th hole the sun was newly risen, and the golden glow and long shadows it cast over the green was just as glorious as getting a hole in one! If possible, Hurricane Matthew has made this hole even more beautiful, as you can see clear through the greenery and palm trees to the ocean and Palmetto Beach.
A big day full of active adventure calls for a big breakfast, so naturally I headed to The General Store. My meal was hearty, homemade, and delicious. I’ll be dreaming of that biscuit for weeks to come! My only regret was not trying the cheesy grits—a menu item I’ll have to go back and try another time.
I had the chance to sit in on a Golf Exhibition with the resorts Director of Golf Instruction, Doug Weaver upon my arrival at Palmetto Dunes on Monday afternoon. The free clinic is offered every Monday at 4 p.m. and I’d highly recommend it! Doug Weaver’s knowledge of the game is impressive to say the least. But it’s his cheerful demeanor and easy teaching style that truly stand out. He has a way of making the game accessible for players of all skill levels and he takes away any intimidation you may feel about playing the game. I ran into Doug several times throughout my stay (the man is everywhere!), giving private lessons, or leading stroke of the day workshops. One woman I talked to said that Doug Weaver had changed her swing more in three days than the past 10 years of golf! When you finally master the stroke you’ve been working on, it’s hard to tell who is more excited, him, or you! No wonder he’s been inducted into the Hilton Head Island Golf Hall of Fame.
I ran into a few golfers on their golf bikes while out on the Arthur Hills course. What a great way to get around and add an added active element to your golf game! One player I talked to joked that he liked the golf bike more than the game itself.
These courses truly are beautiful. I didn’t get a chance to see George Fazio, as it was being readied for its reopening this spring, but I’ll be eager to return to check it out. I think you’ll have a hard time choosing just one course to play should you head down to Palmetto Dunes for our Sports Itinerary!
As part of our Sports Itinerary we’re offering court time at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, so I had to go check it out. Palmetto Dunes has over two dozen clay tennis courts, as well as junior-sized and pickleball courts, and the friendliest staff and tennis instructor’s you’ll ever meet! Hank’s Stroke of the Day clinic was great, and Mark’s Pickleball Clinic was a ton of fun. (If you’ve never played Pickleball before, you’ve got to try it! It’s a fun, fast-paced leisure sport that also happens to be one of the fastest-growing in America. Click here to learn more about the game.)
After lunch on the patio at Big Jim’s—feasting on shrimp n’ grits, a must-try meal when you’re in South Carolina—it was time to head to Shelter Cove Marina to try our hand at fishing. A chartered offshore fishing excursion is included in our Sports Itinerary and whether you’re an avid angler or a first-time fisherman you’ll enjoy being out on the water and enjoying the beauty of the bay at Palmetto Dunes. And, with the expert help from you’re guide, and a little luck, you might just catch a fish, too!
We headed out with Miles and John on The Phantom. We spent a delightful few hours exploring, trying different “fishing holes”, learning a ton about baiting and casting, and finally reeling in our whiting, we headed back to the marina for dinner. On our way we saw two dolphins! A mother and her baby. What a precious moment. A glimpse of dorsal fin and flick of tail were just about enough to make my day. John tells me that in the summer months when the water is warmer and the bait fish are plentiful, you can’t help but see dolphins on your excursion as there are so many in the area!
Once back on dry land, we headed to Bucci’s for dinner. Sitting on their patio during happy hour is the perfect place to regale with tales of your fishing adventures. (We won’t say a word if you add a few extra inches to the length of your catch!). I tried one of the chef’s favorites, veal marsala, and it was delicious! If you’re still stuck on seafood, try the calamari, catch of the day, or lobster ravioli. As I watched the sunset at the marina, and listen to the ocean breeze rustle the palm trees, I realized Palmetto Dunes has everything you need for an incredible active vacation.

If getting in shape is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, you may wonder how you’re going to keep up with your fitness goals during your Palmetto Dunes vacation.
Not only will you never run out of things to do on Hilton Head Island, you’ll have a blast staying fit with these fun activities!
Two wheels good, four wheels bad
With over 50 miles of paved bike paths, it’s no secret that a bike is the perfect way to get around Hilton Head Island. Our bike rentals at Hilton Head Outfitters are just the thing to get you out on the open road! Did you know that you can burn up to 300 calories per hour just enjoying our many bike paths and trails?
Take a hike
Whether you’re combing the beaches on Hilton Head Island, strolling along the boardwalk at the marina, or strutting through the shops at Shelter Cove Harbour, incorporating walking into your vacation is a great way to get around, see some sights, and stay active. The incredible beach at Palmetto Dunes is over three miles long, so a walk to the end and back will add up to well over an hour of exercise – and with such a great view, we know you’ll enjoy every minute of it!
Go to court
The tennis facilities at Palmetto Dunes are world renowned, and nothing gets your heart rate going like a fast-paced set of tennis. Whether you’re a new to the game and in need of instruction or a seasoned player looking to play on superb courts, tennis is a fun way to stay fit while on vacation. One hour of tennis can burn up to 600 calories and health benefits of playing the game include cardiovascular and heart health, improved coordination and balance, muscle development, and strengthened bones.
If tennis isn’t quite your thing, try your paddle at Pickleball - the newest net game to hit Palmetto Dunes. This sport is great for all ages, combining elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Best of all, it’s a blast to play.
Add some spin to your golf game
There’s now an easy way to work some extra fitness into your favorite game: the golf bikes at Palmetto Dunes! You can reserve a golf bike just as you would a golf cart when booking your tee time. Bonus: the bikes are easier on the greens than a golf cart! It’s never been easier to pedal and putt your way to fitness at Palmetto Dunes.
Paddle to the metal
If your legs are wearing out from all of your biking, walking and running, hop in a kayak and give your arms a workout. Did we say arms? We meant arms, shoulders, back, abdomen, chest and hands. Yep, kayaking is one heck of an upper body workout, not to mention a fantastic way to discover and experience all of the wildlife Hilton Head Island is home to. Hilton Head Outfitters has a great selection of kayaks to choose from, and Hilton Head Island has over 11 miles of lagoon systems to explore, so what are you waiting for?
We know that vacations are all about sitting back and relaxing, but with so many recreational activities at Palmetto Dunes, incorporating fitness into your vacation has never been simpler or more fun! Besides, an ice-cold drink at The Dunes House tastes mighty fine after a great workout.
Check back next month for another blog post on how to make the most of your Hilton Head Island vacation and have the ultimate lowcountry experience!
