Croissants, baguettes, and pastries, oh my! Life on Hilton Head Island just got a little bit sweeter with the new Hilton Head Social Bakery. The beautiful café and bakery located at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina is a passion project for New York chef Phillipe Feret and his partner Marissa Burnpur. Feret has worked in some of the finest restaurants in New York and had his own restaurant, Brasserie Julien, for 15 years. The talented pastry chef is bringing his Parisian roots and culinary expertise to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, and we for one cannot wait to taste his delectable desserts.
Eclairs, croissants, tarts, turnovers, European-style bread and brioche, chocolates, cakes, is your mouth watering yet? We wanted to learn more about the Hilton Head Social Bakery so we went straight to the source. Check out our interview with Executive Chef Phillipe Feret and don’t forget to check out the Hilton Head Social Bakery next time you visit Palmetto Dunes.
You’ve been open about a month now. How’s it going so far?
It’s great! Our initial concern was the customer response to introducing something new and different here, but they love it! This gives us fuel to do even better.
Your father owned a bakery in France. How does it feel to be following in his footsteps?
It’s a nice feeling and I’m sure he’s proud of me. I think about him all of the time now that I am baking again, especially when I am using his original baking tools that he gave me just before we opened. He used [them] in our bakery when I was young.
What bakery item do you enjoy making the most?
Croissants, because croissants are temperamental and are an interesting challenge. To make a great croissant everything has to [be perfect], the temperature, the environment, the timing, etc. Most of the time they are in a good mood!
The café is so beautiful! We love all of the reclaimed wood and special touches. What inspired you to create such a beautiful space?
The bakery is significant because the inside has a story to it. From the floor to the wood cabinetry, to the artifacts. My fiancée and I always wanted to have a barn house with reclaimed wood, so, for now, we combined our talents to build this in a contemporary design. She is my biggest inspiration.
Do you have a favorite dessert? Which pastry would you recommend?
All of the desserts I make are my favorite. But most of all, the apple tart and crème brulée. I would never make anything I didn’t like.
What do you love most about Hilton Head Island?
The community is very supportive and friendly [and] it’s very peaceful here. The island life is great.
Thanks to Philippe for answering our questions! If you’d like to learn more about the Hilton Head Social Bakery, check out their Facebook Page. Or visit their new website at www.hiltonheadsocialbakery.com! Bon appétit!

To help you plan, and get you as excited as we are for all of the exciting summer festivities at Shelter Cove Harbour, here’s your guide to HarbourFest 2016. Arguably the most famous thing about HarbourFest is also the most fantastic – the fireworks at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina! This year, fireworks will start at 9:30 p.m. to make sure everyone is able to get to Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and settle in for the show.
HarbourFest fireworks will be held Tuesdays on the following dates:

Enjoy activity and adventure for two
At Palmetto Dunes, there are so many ways to spend the day with your special someone. Enjoy precious alone time riding a bicycle built for two along miles of paved bike paths across the island, or by taking a kayak or canoe ride down our peaceful inland lagoon system. Turn up the heat with a playful game of tennis or golf, or cozy up on our beautiful beaches with the sound of waves crashing in the background. Whatever your activity, enjoying time together can’t help but ignite the flame between you.
Find time for rest, relaxation and romance
Pamper your partner with a rejuvenating spa treatment at the Ocean Tides Spa at the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort or Spa Soleil at Hilton Head Marriot Resort and Spa. A couples’ massage is a perfect way to mellow your mood and heighten your senses, setting the tone for an evening of romance.
Tantalize your taste buds
They say that the way to the heart is through the stomach and with so many places to eat on Hilton Head Island, you can awaken both your passion and your palate during your couples vacation. Dine overlooking the beach at the Dunes House or share a romantic dinner with a view of the harbour at one of the many oceanside restaurants at Shelter Cove Harbour.
Adore one another at dusk
There’s nothing quite like gazing at the sunset over the ocean to spark romance. Take a walk along the beach at twilight or join an evening sail aboard a Hilton Head Island cruise, and forget the rest of the world as the sun sets on your perfect day.
Retreat for romance
Nothing quickens the heart like the intimate setting of one of our Oceanview Villas. Retire to your suite and finish off your day with a romantic rendezvous for two.

Here in Hilton Head where most days the skies are blue and the weather is mild, there is plenty to do to keep active during the winter months.
Here are our top 10 winter activities on Hilton Head Island:
1) Polish your golf game – Our Hilton Head golf academy offers a variety of classes for golfers all winter long. Learn to play more carefree like Bubba Watson, improve your mental golf game or enjoy daily 50-minute clinics on different skills. Check out our winter golf academy schedule for more information.
2) Ride a bike! – With over 50 miles of paved pike paths on Hilton Head Island, there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy the beauty of our island. Hilton Head Outfitters offers Hilton Head bike rentals for every member of your family, including cruisers, kiddie carts, tag-a-longs and child seats.
3) Get in a cardio workout with a game of tennis – Our mild weather on Hilton Head Island is ideal for outdoor play! Try a Hilton Head tennis lesson from our award-winning Palmetto Dunes Tennis Centre or try something new and get the blood pumping with a game of Pickleball!
4) Shop! – There are plenty of unique boutiques and stores on Hilton Head, so make sure you head home with a one-of-a-kind souvenir of your Hilton Head vacation. Our favorite spots to shop are along the waterfront at Shelter Cove Harbour, the golf pro shops at Palmetto Dunes and our tennis pro shop.
5) Paddle the 11-mile lagoon – Rent a kayak or canoe from Hilton Head Outfitters and head out mid afternoon, when the weather is warmest. Enjoy a peaceful tour of our 11-mile inland lagoon system, take in the wildlife and see Palmetto Dunes in an entirely new way.
6) Beach combing! – Take a walk on the beach and look for shells. With fewer people visiting Hilton Head in the winter, you could have the beach all to yourself and you’ll have a better chance of finding some stunning seashells. Keep your eye out for dolphins in the surf and see what treasures have washed ashore.
7) Catch a redfish! – Fall and winter are some of the best times to catch a “big red” and our team of experienced fishermen can help you do it. Whether you take an offshore or inshore Hilton Head fishing charter, or rent some gear and cast-off from the beach, learn to fish from our pros and see if you can land a trophy-sized red!
8) Eat oysters – Oysters are never as fresh and delicious as they are in the fall and winter on Hilton Head Island, so slurp up! Whether you prefer a touch of lemon, a dash of hot sauce or plain, these are a perfect lowcountry delight.
9) Go birdwatching – The birds are out in winter, and in fact, over past years we’ve spotted more species than ever before! Grab some binoculars and head out on a kayak in the lagoon, or take a Hilton Head boat tour to Daufuskie Island or Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge for some great birdwatching. Head to the Hilton Head Outfitters blog for more birdwatching tips.
10) Do nothing! – What’s a vacation without a little bit of R&R? After you’ve done our Top 9, relax, unwind and do nothing at all! Kick back in your Hilton Head vacation rental and enjoy an ocean or palm tree view. Embrace the charm and ease of lowcountry life; grab a book, a cup of coffee and rest. Ahhh…
Palmetto Dunes offers plenty of vacation packages to help you work in everything on your ‘Things to Do’ list! From our spa packages to Hilton Head tennis and golf packages.
