Other features of the new website include an easy-to-navigate resort calendar that helps users view all of the events taking place during their vacation, which can include nearly 30 tennis clinics weekly, along with golf clinics, dining specials, live music, family events at Palmetto Dunes’ waterfront Shelter Cove Harbour and others.

Wondering how you can stay in shape during your Hilton Head Island vacation? It’s a breeze! Even if you take a break from your regular exercise video or weight lifting routine during your trip, you can still get in some great entire body workouts by simply enjoying the great outdoors around our island.

Here are 5 fantastic ways to stay fit on Hilton Head Island:

    1. Run on the beach – Do you regularly run your neighborhood at home or perhaps a local park? On Hilton Head Island, we’ve got an even better view: the Atlantic Ocean! Head out in the morning before it heats up and keep your eye out for dolphins. You won’t even realize you’re out of breath!

    2. Ride a bike – We offer Hilton Head bike rentals for your convenience if you’re flying to the area or don’t want to drive down with your own bike. Hilton Head Island offers 50 miles of paved bike paths – 5 miles within our resort that have just been redone -- for you to explore the beauty of the Lowcountry.

    3. Stand up Paddleboarding – One of the fastest growing watersports, stand up paddleboarding, or SUP, is a great full body workout that requires lots of balance and core strength. Paddle the waves in the Atlantic or Shelter Cove’s Broad Creek and enjoy the scenery. Hilton Head Outfitters has these special boards for rent. You can even try yoga on a stand up paddleboard with classes offered by Outside Hilton Head.

    4. Go surfing
    – If you don’t know how to surf, attend our 90-minute Surf Camp offered Monday through Friday during the summer to learn the basics. Then rent a board from Hilton Head Outfitters and hang 10!

    5. Play tennis
    – Tennis is a great cardio workout and we offer guests who book their Hilton Head vacation rentals through us two hours of free tennis court time daily. If that’s not quite enough of a workout for you, try our Hilton Head cardio tennis class for a real heart-pumping workout.

Tennis Tips from Palmetto Dunes Pros: Returning Serve in Doubles

When you’re returning a serve in doubles, your main goal should be to keep the person on the other side of the net from returning a winning shot. Brian Kiggans, head golf pro at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, says you should always view the return serve as a set-up shot.

To do this effectively, you need a plan. “You should already know where you are wanting the return to be directed before your opponent serves the ball,” says Kiggans. “You should have a plan on the forehand side and on the backhand side (or the same for both).”

According to Kiggans, you have three main choices when returning:

    1. Back to the server
    2. Toward the net person
    3. Lob over the net person

“For example, if John Doe is serving to me, I have preprogrammed my mind that if the ball comes to my forehand I am going to return crosscourt back to the server. If it comes to my backhand, I am going lob over the net person,” says Kiggans. “This is my plan and I am sticking with it no matter what is happening on the other side of the net. If the serve is really difficult to handle and I can’t execute my plan, I just do my best to get the ball back in play.”

You should also plan the action you’re going to take after the return is made as to whether you are going to the net or staying back. Says Kiggans, “For example, I have planned to return crosscourt if the ball comes to my forehand and follow it to the net if it comes to my backhand. I am going down the line and staying back.”

In conclusion, planning ahead is one of the most important things you can do when returning serve and in life!

    Tennis tip - Racquet Restringing

    Racquet Restringing
    by John Kerr
    Palmetto
    Dunes Tennis Center

Is it time to restring your trusty old tennis racquet? Most tennis players don't know the answer to this very important question. A good rule of thumb is the number of times you play tennis per week is the number of times you should restring per year. The maximum recommended time between restrings is one year. It is important to restring because tennis strings, according to the manufacturers, have a "life." That life is affected not only by the amount of tennis played, but also by nature (temperature, humidity, court moisture). Leaving your tennis racquet in your car during extremely hot and/or cold weather will dramatically reduce string life. Dead string could lead to injury as well as decreased performance on the court.

Having decided to have your racquet restrung, what are your options? The type of string available ranges from natural gut ($50) to an inexpensive nylon ($24). Most players choose some type of synthetic gut (fancy nylon), which falls in between. The gage (thickness) of the string is also very important. The lower the number (15 gage), the thicker the string. The advantage of a thicker string is durability. If you don't break strings on a regular basis, you don't need a thick gage string. Most players opt for a string gage in the 16-18 gage range. The thinner the string, the livelier the feel and the more spin you can generate on the ball. The disadvantage is durability, but if you don't have a string-breaking problem, you will enjoy the thinner gage.

The tension of your new string job will make or break how your racquet feels. An improper tension can lead to injury and/or erratic play. All racquets have a recommended tension range. A quality stringer has a manual listing all the racquets and their ranges. The high end of the recommended tension offers more control as the ball flattens on the strings at impact. The low end offers more power as the strings form a pocket as the ball impacts and acts like a trampoline to propel the ball. A good starting point is in the middle. See how it feels and adjust accordingly on your next string job.

Paying attention to your strings can lead to better performance on the tennis court and also help to keep you out of the doctor's office. Many people restring and say, "I can't believe I waited so long." You'll notice the difference a good string job makes in your game. And as always, consult your local pro. Your pro knows your game.

6 Great Spring Break Activities for Kids on Hilton Head Island

We finally made it to spring break! Say goodbye to the bad winter weather and hello to warm sunny South Carolina skies. If you’re headed down our way for spring break, we’ve got some great suggestions for kids to enjoy here at the resort. From golf to swimming to fishing and more, there’s no time for video games or for getting bored here on Hilton Head Island.

Here’s our list of top spring break activities for kids on the island:

    1. Swim -- What child doesn’t love to jump in the water and splash away? We figure that’s probably the first thing they’re going to want to do when they arrive, so we put it first on the list. Depending on the weather, if the ocean waters are a little too cool yet, hit the pool at your Hilton Head vacation rental, some of which are heated, and should be plenty warm in the sun.
    2. Ride a bike – Our next suggestion that kids will love is riding their bike. We’re sure they’re already used to it at home and now they’ve got an entirely new area to explore. We recently replaced most of our bike paths, which number 5 miles within the resort alone. Instead of driving your car, ride your bike to the beach, to lunch, to golf, you name it! Get your Hilton Head bike rentals and all the gear you need at Hilton Head Outfitters.
    3. Learn a new skill – Palmetto Dunes offers wonderful junior programs for both golf and tennis. Not only will kids and teens stay active and keep their minds firing, they’ll come home from Hilton Head Island proud to show their friends what they’ve learned. Watch these fun videos about our Little Swingers golf class and junior tennis clinics.
    4. Explore nature – Nature is all around you on Hilton Head Island from the moss-draped live oak trees and colorful azaleas to shore birds and plentiful fish. Rent double kayaks and put an adult with each child for a peaceful kayak through our calm 11-mile lagoon system. See who can spot the most birds
    5. Reel in a big one – We have lots of great fishing around Palmetto Dunes, including our fair share of “monster” fish. Take a Hilton Head fishing charter on our lagoon and see if you can reel in Elvis, the giant red fish, or head out into the ocean for some exciting shark fishing for the whole family.
    6. Go crabbing – This one may surprise you, but crabbing in Hilton Head is one of our favorite activities for families because everyone can get involved. Our charter, the Crabber J, teaches you how to catch a crab and then awards their world-famous Crabber J T-shirt to the person who catches the most!

What do you think your kids will enjoy the most on their Hilton Head Island spring break?

If you still need assistance booking a Hilton Head vacation villa or would like to book any of the above, please contact us at 866-744-7558.
