How to Improve Your Game During the Winter Months

On a day when Hilton Head Island experienced its first significant snow fall in years, Carolinas PGA Teacher of the Year 2017 and Palmetto Dunes Director of Instruction Doug Weaver sat down to share some secrets to improving your golf game during the cold, winter months.

Many of you ask, “What I can do during the winter months?” Jack Nicklaus grew up in Columbus Ohio and he came out each spring ready to go. A few of the following ideas come from him. Many of his Januarys and Februarys were filled with basketball. The following are some ideas for you.

1. Visit Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort for a week to thaw out and to stretch the muscles and play a few rounds of golf. This is a trip that will pay dividends in all areas of your life. Sunshine and outdoors are the best medicine for what is ailing you. Add a golf lesson to simplify your thoughts and enjoy a smooth round of golf on our championship courses.

2. While at home watching TV, perform stretching and strengthening exercises slowly. Do this in the morning and again in the evening. I invite you to email me (dweaver@palmettodunes.com) requesting warm up and stretching protocols that we use in our Golf Mobility Class. Try these to get started: Warm up first by briskly walking around the house or neighborhood until you develop a sweat. While doing this swing your arms forward and back to loosen up your shoulders and to create a rhythm useful in golf. Pretend you are walking our George Fazio Golf Course. Now, do the common stretches you are familiar with. A. Touching your toes, while keeping your knees flexed B. Stand tall with feet shoulder width apart, cross your arms on your chest, rotate your torso to the right and to the left. C. Now take your golf posture and do the same. You can watch your favorite TV Program while doing this. D. Standing tall, slowly lift your right knee upwards toward your chest. Now do it with your left knee. E. Last one for now: stand tall, feet shoulder width apart, slowly reach high with both arms and stretch higher for five (5) seconds. Repeat three (3) times. Complete your session by walking briskly again and compare how you feel now compared to the beginning walk.

3. Swing in a designated area of your house. No one wants to be practicing the wrong things even if it is without a ball in the house. Did Einstein really define insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?” Consider doing this, having your swing analyzed by sending a video from your smartphone to dweaver@palmettodunes.com. I will return a video to you with suggestive drills and stretches.

4. If you are staying home, go to your club’s driving range and hit off the mats. Take a broom for sweeping the snow off. Use your own lost and found golf balls because the Pro does not want you using his. These items can be attached to your pull cart or laid on a snow sled {sleigh}. Dress appropriately — your winter coat is excellent for teaching you to turn your body and keep your arms connected to your body. Your winter gloves can prove to you that a loose grip feels out of control yet produces more power and accuracy.

5. Yogi Berra said, “golf is 90% mental and the other 10% we have to think a lot.” Lee Trevino said, “the best golf psychology is to blame your errors on someone or something else.” The winter is an excellent time to be proactive and take responsibility for your golf game’s improvement. Consider this: Do off-season research and education leading to reach the type of scores about which you’ve been dreaming. Better scores, less stress and more fun on the golf course in 2018 is what Jordan Spieth wants. He met with his entourage of coaches to determine a game plan for becoming No. 1 again. There are many books on this topic. Choosing what book or application are self-diagnoses. Attempting to teach yourself can be dangerous to your golf game. Jordan listened to his coaches. Make it easy by going to www.mentalgolfworkshop.com. First, peruse the website, and read testimonials and learn how it works. If you choose to do this, use the access word: palmetto, this will connect you with me in for one free consultation Q-and-A.

6. Swing Fit at Palmetto Dunes Resort — Getting fit for clubs is easy, getting fit properly is not. That’s why Swing Fit’s sole focus is on fitting and building clubs that help golfers of all skill levels maximize the potential of their swing. Their data-driven fittings are performed by experienced fitters and leverage their extensive fitting matrix of club heads and shafts from all the major manufacturers. They have over 15,000 potential combinations from all the major manufacturers, so you get to test and feel the exact setup you will put into play. New clubs are an investment; their fitting specialists ensure you don’t waste money on the wrong ones. For scheduling a fitting call (855) 225-8214 or info@swingfitclubs.com. The fittings take place at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.

7. Remember the 6 P’s of putting: “proper posture promotes the proper path of the putter.” Putting can be included in your indoor practice. Use a glass that “tings” when the ball hits it. Remember, the winter is time to improve your process or the technique. This will lead to more rapid and lasting improvement. Email me a video of your stroke. When videoing the stroke, imagine and seriously role-play that it’s in front of your group with all the money riding on it.

8. Take Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy’s 2- or 3-Day Schools and find success fast with hands on instruction in 1:1 or small group environments. The agenda covers all areas of the game and playing the courses. The schools begin before you leave home. First you will complete a questionnaire that will help the Instructor develop a game plan. Optional, is the Mental Golf Workshop profile completed while at home and discussed before you arrive. This allows you time absorb what is learned and begin to apply the info as you prepare.

9. Email me your questions in January or February to get a head start on better golf in 2018: dweaver@palmettodunes.com.
