Witness the Great American Eclipse at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

On Monday, August 21st, a rare event that hasn’t happened in this country since 1979 will take place when the moon will entirely cover the sun in a total solar eclipse. Only a narrow swath of destinations across the United States will be in a position to view the full phenomenon.

South Carolina will be the final state in the viewing path of the eclipse, which will cross Charleston starting at 2:40 p.m. Beat the sky-gazing crowds and head to Hilton Head Island which is just outside the complete viewing path. The moon will not entirely cover the sun from our vantage point but it will cover over 97% of it! View the video below to see exactly how much.

The eclipse will peak at 2:46:32 pm EDT, when the moon obscures 97.8% of the sun.

Join us at Palmetto Dunes Resort, where we’ll be celebrating the Great American Eclipse with a variety of activities and specials. Where better to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence than from the beach?

Join us for the BEST seat in the house at The Dunes House, the perfect place to watch the 2017 eclipse. while enjoying live music and themed drink and lunch specials. We'll be serving Eclipse Cookies, our Dark & Sunny frozen cocktail & Southbound Brewing's Scattered Sun on draft. Unicorn Meat will be playing from 1 - 4 p.m. with a secret song during totality.

Or, head to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina for another unobstructed view. We'll have a special Solar Eclipse Cruise aboard the Holiday from noon to 2 p.m. Call the marina at 843-842-7002 to learn more or book.

To make sure you’re prepared for this incredible natural event, we’ve collected six facts about the 2017 solar eclipse:

1. A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, blocking the sun’s light for a period of time. A total solar eclipse hasn’t happened over the United States in close to 40 years, and won’t happen again until 2024.

2. The totality, when the moon completely covers the sun, will be visible in parts of 14 states across the United States, including South Carolina where the totality will occur over Columbia from 2:41–2:44 p.m.

3. When the eclipse passes over Charleston it’s estimated that it will be at a speed of 1,502 miles per hour.

4. It is harmful to look directly at the sun. You will need special eclipse glasses, or a protective device such as a sun funnel or solar filter.

5. NASA will be very busy on August 21st! A solar eclipse allows the space association to gather all sorts of data that they would not otherwise be able to, such as observations of the sun’s outermost atmosphere–the corona, and maps of the moon.

6. During a solar eclipse, not only does the sky turn dark, but the temperature drops.

Learn more about the Great American Eclipse from NASA with this NASA Eclipse Fact sheet.

What are you waiting for? Book your Palmetto Dunes trip before it’s too late and get ready to gaze upon an awesome phenomenon from our beautiful shores.

5 Tennis Tips from the Pros

At Palmetto Dunes, we love tennis! With 26 incredible clay courts, top-notch instructors, daily round robins and clinics, and the largest tennis pro shop on Hilton Head Island, can you blame us? Our tennis pros can help you improve your game during your stay, and so can these tips from some of the tennis world’s most famous players.

The key to mastering tennis fundamentals and swinging like the pros not only involves a lot of practice, it involves practice without a racket. Don’t believe us? Check out these tips from tennis’ most famous sisters:

The key to a serve is your left hand.” – Serena Williams

Work on your toss.” – Venus Williams

Andre Agassi, who won eight Grand Slams put it bluntly: “If you don’t practice you don’t deserve to win.” (Luckily for you, our Tennis Center is open daily, and even has lights so you can play into the evening.)

More than perhaps any other sport, tennis is as mental as it is physical, as any Grand Slam Champion will tell you.

Emotional strength in the game of tennis is everything.” – Billie Jean King

When asked what advice he’d give to players looking to improve their tennis game, Novac Djokovic said, "Passion, believing in yourself, in your abilities."

You’ve just got to get over that mental hurdle and those battles in your own head during matches when things aren’t going so well.” – Samantha Stosur

When it comes down to it, it’s just you, your opponent, and the tennis court. Professional tennis players know that focus and attention are essential to coming out with a win.

The next point? That’s all you must think about.” – Rod Laver

Previously I always thought it was just tactical and technique, but every match has become almost mental and physical—I try to push myself to move well. I try to push myself not to get upset and stay positive, and that's what my biggest improvement is over all those years. Under pressure I can see things very clear.” – Roger Federer

Do these professional tennis tips have you feeling inspired to hit the courts? Let us help you plan the perfect tennis trip!

July Translates to Family Fun at Palmetto Dunes Resort

When we think about the month of July around Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, one word immediately pops into mind: “Family.”

Indeed, July is the ideal month to spend with your family by the beach, enjoying the outdoor weather and cooling off on the beach or by the pool. Which is also why at Palmetto Dunes, we celebrate July as our “Family Golf” month.

Palmetto Dunes is designed for families to get active together by offering a variety of ways to do just that — including its Hilton Head Family Golf School. Whatever levels at which a family may play, Palmetto Dunes will tailor its golf school to specific needs and skill level. Its head of golf instruction, former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver, is great with kids and teaches them moves like “closing the car door” and “alligator arms” to help them learn golf in a fun and engaging way.

The golf school includes a video analysis sent by email, on-course instruction, rules and etiquette lessons, the school’s video lending library, take-home materials, free range privileges, plus nine holes of golf daily on a space-available basis.

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort caters to golfers of all levels, having installed permanent junior tees on its Robert Trent Jones golf course, while the George Fazio course caters to juniors. The Fazio junior tees measure 3,384 yards for 18 holes, with the longest hole (No. 10) measuring 316 yards. Holes range between 90 and 316 yards. In addition, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate.

This summer, the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy features lessons and clinics for all ages and skill levels. Palmetto Dunes offers four family-oriented options:

• The “Family Golf School,” where coaches are able to teach different skill levels at the same time is a total of $1,300, which includes three days (two hours per day) of instruction for the entire family, nine holes of golf on three different days, unlimited practice, an instructional manual, and videos and photos to remember. Scheduling is flexible.
• The “Family Golf Class” is $200 and includes two hours of instruction, an hour on the range and an hour on the course. Coaches can teach different skill levels at the same time for up to five people ($50 per additional player). Clubs are included along with an instructional manual, and videos and photos to remember.

• “Parents Night Out” allows for parents to have time together, while children are learning a game for a lifetime, and includes videos and photos to remember.
• “Little Swingers” is offered Monday and Tuesday from 5:15 PM - 6 PM for $25 (ages 3-7) at the Robert Trent Jones Course. Focusing on different aspects of the game every class, the Junior Morning Clinic takes place each weekday at 10 AM for $25 and the Junior Afternoon Clinic occurs Monday through Thursday at 4 PM for $25 (ages 6-18) at the Robert Trent Jones Course. Parent participation is required, which translates into family bonding while everyone is learning. Clubs are included, along with videos and photos to remember.

To book one of the golf lessons or clinics you see here, please call

ShowNavisNCPhoneNumber();.

In addition, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort also offers the club fitting, building and repair services of SwingFit, which is owned and operated by Chris Wycoff — one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.”

Away from the golf course, your family will also enjoy Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and its outdoor Southern phenomenon known as HarbourFest. Shelter Cove Harbour is a Mediterranean-style village located mid-island at mile marker 8 across from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, offering casual waterfront dining, unique shopping, live entertainment and beautiful views of Broad Creek. And don’t forget to snap a selfie with the Statue of Neptune, the world’s largest figurative sundial.

Lowcountry Lingo

Palm trees, sweet tea, beautiful beaches, oyster roasts and fresh fish, porches—there are all sorts of signs that you’re in The South. If you listen carefully, you may pick up on another undeniable sign that you’re on Hilton Head Island: our Lowcountry lingo! Have you ever heard any of these phrases while you were staying at Palmetto Dunes?

If you ask a Southerner for directions while out for a bike ride, or if you’re trying to find your way to The Dunes House or one of our Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina restaurants, don’t be surprised if you hear the word yonder in their reply. Yonder describes distance, but how much exactly? No one is too sure.

A common Lowcountry saying that indicates someone is planning to do something. For example, someone might say they’re fixin’ to try the new menu at Alexander’s Restaurant. They may not be heading to the restaurant tonight for dinner, but you can bet it’s on their to-do list.

No, it’s not an insult or an interjection, it’s a sports team! The varsity sports teams of the University of South Carolina are known as the Gamecocks and they’re hugely popular! That is, of course, unless you cheer for their rivals, the Clemson University Tigers. Join us at Big Jim’s to catch all of your favorite sports action.

When you're at Palmetto Dunes you might hear someone talk about the general store. They’re not just talking about any old shop! They’re talking about The General Store, located across from the Tennis Center and by the Robert Trent Jones course. Hilton Head Island pros know that this is the place to fuel up, grab essentials for your vacation rental, and chat with a coffee on the front porch.

This Southern expression is fairly self-explanatory: whomever you’re talking about is extremely happy. Maybe they aced a hole on one of our Hilton Head golf courses or caught a fish while out on one of our boat charters. Or, maybe you and your friends will be happier than a pig in mud after spending the day at Palmetto Dunes Beach.

This versatile Southern phrase is said when a person is expressing a belief, guess, fact, or musing. We reckon that a beachfront villa rental is a perfect place for a memorable vacation! (See what we did there?)

We think you'll find that the people you meet on Hilton Head Island are friendly, helpful, and courteous. We can't help it! Good manners are a way of life down here, and as such, you'll hear "sir” or “ma’am” practically everywhere you go. Chalk it up to Southern charm and gentleness.

Last but not least! We couldn’t talk about Southern sayings and leave out the phrase you’re likely to hear most of all: y’all! This version of the plural second person pronoun is ingrained in our way of speech down here in The South, and we’re sure y’all won’t make it through your Hilton Head Island vacation without hearing it more than once.

What Lowcountry lingo have you heard when visiting Palmetto Dunes? Leave us a comment with your favorite Southern phrase, and start planning your next Hilton Head vacation so you can come hear our Lowcountry lingo for yourself!

Recipe: Alexander’s Summer Watermelon Salad

Summertime and the eating is easy—especially with this light and refreshing summer watermelon salad from Alexander’s Restaurant. Alexander’s, a favorite Hilton Head Island restaurant, recently reopened and they’ve been serving up delicious seafood and seasonally inspired dishes to rave reviews. Chef de Cuisine Sean Carroll has handed over this recipe so you can take the tastes of Palmetto Dunes home with you!

Ingredients

Balsamic Vinaigrette
2 Tbsp Honey
1 Tbsp Creole mustard
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 ea. Shallot sliced
1 Tbsp Garlic minced
1 Tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
2 Cup Blended oil (75% Canola 25% Extra Virgin Olive oil)

Marinated Watermelon
1 ea. Watermelon, seedless
1/2 Cup Grenadine
2 Tbsp Red wine vinegar
2 ea. Garlic cloves, crushed
1.5 Cup Blended Oil (75% Canola 25% Extra Virgin Olive oil)
2 Tsp Granulated sugar

For the Salad
1 lb. Mixed greens, rinsed
4 Tbsp Smoked almonds, crushed
6 oz. Ricotta Salata cheese, shaved with a peeler
2 oz. Fresh basil, torn by hand

Directions

1. Take the watermelon and remove the rind. Cut the watermelon into bite size pieces. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade, and whisk together. Pour over the watermelon, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
2. For the dressing, combine all ingredients, except for the blended oil, in a food processor. Combine until well incorporated. With the processor on, slowly add the oil, until the dressing is emulsified. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt, pepper, lemon, and/or sugar.
3. Now it is time for the party to start. Place the marinated watermelon at the base of the plate (like the foundation). In a mixing bowl, mix the greens with the balsamic vinaigrette. Place over the watermelon. Take the torn basil and stud in different areas throughout the salad. Top the salad with the shaved ricotta and sprinkle the smoked almonds over the top.

This recipe serves 8 people and can be plated “party style” or individually. Enjoy!
