Enjoy Gourmet Food, Live Music at Hilton Head’s Shelter Cove Harbour this Fall

Fall is a great season to visit Hilton Head Island. The pace is a little slower, the air a little cooler and the prices a little lower :). Another great reason to travel here in the fall is to enjoy the annual concert series held at Shelter Cove Harbour that features local musicians, some of the best food in town and one of the island’s most magnificent views.

On Thursday evenings from September 11-October 23, Shelter Cove Harbour presents Music & Taste on the Harbour from 6-9 p.m. Each event will feature live music from different local bands right along the marina with plenty of dancing as the sun sets over Broad Creek. Look for performances from Target the Band, The Chilly Willy Band, The Headliners and more.

Two featured Shelter Cove Harbour restaurants will also set up around the famed Neptune Statue with light appetizers and drink specials for purchase throughout the evening. Participating restaurants include Bistro 17, ELA’s Blue Water Grille, La Fontana, Scott’s Fish Market, San Miguel’s and the new Mediterranean Harbour Bar & Grill.

The event kicks off September 11 at 6 p.m. with The Headliners and food and drink stations from all participating Shelter Cove restaurants. Admission to all of the events is free, and donations of canned food will be accepted for the Deep Well Project, a nonprofit organization that helps people in emergency situations.

Bring an empty stomach and your dancing shoes and get ready to enjoy Hilton Head Island at its fall finest.

Tennis Tips from our Hilton Head Tennis Pros to Improve Your Play

If you’re looking to improve your tennis game, you’ve come to the right place. With some 30,000 people coming through the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center every year and more than 40 different Hilton Head tennis clinics available every week March through October, we know how to help you better your skills.

Here some tennis tips from our Hilton Head tennis pros at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center:

For a more consistent toss on your serve

    • Try using the net post as a guide so your tossing arm extends and goes straight up the net post.
    • Keep your tossing elbow straight (any bend in the elbow will vary your toss).
    • Hold the ball loosely with your fingertips and toss ball with your palm facing the sky.
    • Any bend or flick of your wrist will vary your toss.

Pump your arms like a sprinter

If you have to sprint a considerable distance, say from behind the baseline to inside the service line or from corner to corner, you’ll find that you can move much faster if you take your nondominant hand off the handle and pump your arms like a sprinter. If you need to hit a two-handed shot, you can put your hand back on the racquet just before swinging.

    Decide ahead of time

Indecision is costly in tennis, but there are two times when you should never be guilty of this cardinal sin: when you are serving and returning serve. Before you step up to the line to hit a serve, know what kind of placement, speed and spin you want to give it. When returning serve, decide and picture in your mind what you’ll do with the ball on both forehand and backhand sides if you get a good swing at the ball.

Watch the contact or see the sound

Everyone watches the ball, but not the contact of the ball. Keep your head still until you can see the blur of the ball, a yellow streak, coming off of your racquet. Or think of seeing the ball all the way in to your racquet until you hear the sound hit your strings. You should not look at the other side until after your follow-through.

    Grip Tension

Your grip tension must be relaxed on every stroke. Over-squeezing makes the whole arm tense up, which causes you to muscle the ball over the net. This can create tennis elbow down the road.

On a scale of 1 to 5, your grip tension should never be tighter than a 2 tension -- 1 being as loose as you can hold, 5 being as tight as you can hold. Be even lighter on your serve and overheads where it should be a 1 ½ tension.

Imagine you are holding a baby bird and you don’t want him to fly away but you don’t want to smash him in your hands either. That’s a relaxed grip tension. So think of being relaxed and effortless but not muscling the ball.

    Serve Like Agassi

Very few people can blast a serve like Andy Roddick, so, instead, take Agassi’s approach. Agassi moved his serve around the box and would often hit a big kicker to start off the point. At times he would go for an ace with a flat serve, but usually he would hit a slice or kicker with varying speeds and placement to keep his opponent off balance. Agassi used his serve to set up points rather than trying to finish them.

How to get More Distance in Your Golf Swing

How can you hit the bar farther on your next Hilton Head golf round? We’ve got some tips:

First, our Director of Golf Instruction Doug Weaver recommends warming up. Try a brisk stroll around the neighborhood and a few stretches to loosen your muscles, especially the hamstrings, hips and shoulders. Then, head to the course, but stay active and loose.

When you’re ready to practice your swing, Weaver says to relax your grip, lengthen your back swing and keep in mind that your power comes from your hips and thighs. He quotes Sam Snead who said, “Golf is like dancing - it is all in your legs." Get ready to dance!

Take a few swings and see if you get more distance each time.

On About.Golf.Com, it notes that “golf strength” is an often under-recognized, yet key element to any golf swing. It has to do with how well your body is conditioned to swing a golf club, which does not mean you need to look like a body builder! You need to have a good combination of flexibility, balance, strength and power.

PGA.com has a video where they demonstrate several drills to help improve the power of your swing, including tossing a ball across the body in a bounce pass and driving the ball up in the air from a laying down position. Watch the video below:

We hope to see you on our three championship golf courses soon making some powerful shots! For more information about private golf lessons or Hilton Head golf clinics to improve your swing, view the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy schedule or call us at 866-650-4130.

George Fazio Course Named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year for 2014

Three-Ball. Hat Trick. Trifecta. No matter what you call it — if it happens in sports, three of almost anything is reason to celebrate.

We’re excited to share with you that we’ve experienced our own three-peat after the S.C. Board of Directors of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) named our George Fazio golf course the 2014 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year. It’s the third and final of our three Hilton Head golf courses to receive this prestigious designation.

In 2003, the Robert Trent Jones oceanfront course was named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year, while the Arthur Hills golf course received the honor in 2009. All three have also been rated four stars or more by Fodor’s Golf Digest Places to Play.

“The award-winning George Fazio course embodies the values we cherish at Palmetto Dunes – offering year-round championship golf in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry,” says Brad Marra, vice president of resort operations for Palmetto Dunes. “Many golfers regard it as the island’s most challenging championship course.”

The Fazio golf course demands a combination of long play and precise golf shots. From the 432-yard 1st hole to the 462-yard 18th hole, the Fazio course is the only par-70 golf course on Hilton Head Island. Its long par-4s are beset with bunkers and water hazards. The Fazio course plays 6,239 yards from the middle white tees.

In October, the Fazio Course will be in the running for National Golf Course of the Year.

Book a tee time at the Fazio course and try it out for yourself! For more information about Hilton Head golf packages or group golf on Hilton Head Island, visit www.palmettodunes.com.

Play Golf like Rory McIlroy at Hilton Head’s Palmetto Dunes

Everyone’s talking about Rory McIlroy right now with his big win at the British Open. He even got the coveted Sports Illustrated cover, which is rare for any golfer other than Tiger Woods. Here at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, we like to teach golfers how to improve their game and love to take a look at some of the pros’ best techniques.

According to our Director of Golf Instruction Doug Weaver, Rory McIlroy is known for his rotating swing. When you look at the completion of his swing, his right shoulder is over the left leg and past the left shoulder rather than stopping the rotation.

How can you learn that technique? Weaver suggests naturally tossing a ball toward to the left of the target line almost at a right angle to get the feel of it. He says it translates into better compression of the ball, which you’ll hit clean and far. Watch this video of Weaver demonstrating:

In a recent article, Golf Digest also noted McIlroy’s outstanding putting at the British Open where he made 20 birdies and two eagles and one-putted 34 out of 72 greens. The article notes that his putting coach Dave Stockton teaches players to “begin to set their stance while looking out at the line -- not at the ball.” At the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, we offer eight hours of putting instruction every week to help you work on that aspect of your game.

The Daily Mail’s Tony Jacklin says, “Rory’s technique is fabulous, showing that golf is nothing to do with size but all about speed and balance and rhythm and skill. It’s magical to watch.”

Weaver offers some tips for putting like McIlroy in this video filmed at the oceanfront 10th hole at the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes:

Of course, if you want to be like Rory, it doesn’t hurt to use Nike clubs and wear Nike apparel, too. The Palmetto Dunes golf pro shop at the Robert Trent Jones golf course is one of only six Nike Golf TTC Concept shops across the U.S. where you can find plenty of Nike gear.

If you want to learn to play like Rory, look no farther than the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. Call us at 866-650-4130 to schedule your private lesson today!

All About Hilton Head Island’s Beaches

One of the top reasons folks venture down our way is for our amazing beaches that stretch along the Atlantic Ocean. On Hilton Head Island, you will find a total of 12 miles of beach, including 3 miles just within Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort alone!

The island is actually just 5 miles wide and shaped like a foot, so it’s easy enough to get from one beach to another in a short span of time. Expect tide levels to change as much as 6-8 feet every six hours, so don’t leave your beach towels too close to the water when you go for a stroll.

Lots of organizations have lauded Hilton Head’s beaches, giving them top honors. USA Today named Hilton Head Island as one of the 10 best Carolina beaches, Parents Magazine selected us the No. 1 beach town in the U.S., and U.S. News & World Report showcased the island as No. 6 on its list of Top 10 Best Beaches for 2013.

The beaches of Hilton Head Island are the perfect spot to engage in a range of activities like biking, running, surfing, paddleboarding, skimboarding, swimming and so much more. Build the perfect sand castle, collect shells and discover amazing sea creatures, just be sure to put back any live ones and fill in your holes and level sandcastles at the end of the day for the safety of our Loggerhead Sea Turtles.

Within Palmetto Dunes’ 3 miles of beaches, you’ll find beautiful Hilton Head vacation homes and villas, as well as the oceanfront Dunes House, which is open to our guests and property owners. You can enjoy lunch, dinner or drinks at the outdoor restaurant, as well as live music during the summer months. At the Dunes House, you’ll also find the Hilton Head Outfitters kiosk where you can enroll in surf camp, rent beach chairs or paddleboards and lots more.
