In the world of golf business, the PGA Merchandise Show is a major championship. The 64th PGA Merchandise Show took place in late January in Orlando, with 1,000-plus top golf companies and brands, and more than 40,000 industry professionals from around the world descending upon the industry’s annual global summit for the business of golf.
Of course, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort was well represented around the Orange County Convention Center. Here are some of the latest and greatest golf equipment and technologies our correspondents saw at “The Show.”
Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy Director, Doug Weaver, brought home some cutting-edge technology with Blast Golf and Putting, a full-swing analysis tool that Doug’s friend and seven-time PGA Tour winner Brad Faxon designed and uses. The Blast Golf swing analyzer sensor captures a user’s stroke metrics, helps analyze their data and provides drills to improve their timing. By improving timing, they will make more putts. Said Doug: “Blast Golf allows us to gather swing and stroke metrics on students. We combine with video show the student faults and offer fixes.”
Palmetto Dunes is also offering the latest video technology to create a personalized cyber vision tool for students to learn how to truly visualize. “Visualization connects the brain to muscles faster in the learning process,” Doug said. “Jason Day, the No. 1 player in the world closing his eyes in his pre-shot routine, has created a surge of interest in this area of high level of performance in golf.” https://blastmotion.com
Director of Golf Clark Sinclair was roaming the aisles in Orlando. One of his favorite pieces of equipment was the new GBB Epic driver from Callaway Golf http://cmp.callawaygolf.com. In 2017 Callaway clubs (XR woods and irons) will be available for rental at all three Palmetto Dunes courses. Clark said he also was impressed with the newest PUMA Golf http://www.cobragolf.com/pumagolf/ line of clothing, which is one of the most popular Palmetto Dunes pro shop offerings, while PD has PUMA GOLF music speakers for sale in the pro shops. On Clark’s wish list is a full-swing simulator from Foresight Sports, which allows golf junkies to turn practically any space around the house into the ultimate golf simulator. http://www.foresightsports.com/golf-simulators
Finally, one of our correspondents at The Show bumped into former PGA Tour caddie and current ESPN.com senior golf analyst Michael Collins. Collins said the coolest thing he had seen in Orlando was the Swing Coach. Swing Coach is a self-improvement training aid for consistency and accuracy, a game-changing personal training aid to help golfers develop a repeatable swing—resulting in better shots and lower scores. https://www.swingcoachclub.com
Collins also took note of the most expensive golf clubs at The Show that went for $75,000 including a hosel made from gold and platinum, manufactured by Japanese equipment company Honma Golf. We better get out there and win the lottery! http://www.honmagolf.com
The Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy Director, Doug Weaver, a former PGA Tour player, recommends a handful of New Year’s Resolutions to help you enjoy your golf game more in 2017.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the holiday season, and to all who entered our #ShelterCoveChristmas contest. Dozens of photos capturing Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina’s festive décor were submitted this year and we enjoyed every single one of them.
Mandy will be receiving our Ultimate Shelter Cove Prize, which includes a 2-night stay at Palmetto Dunes, a 2-hour guided kayak tour of Hilton Head Island, $50 for Nash Gallery at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and $25 to Neptune’s Niche in Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. She’ll also get to take home a little bit of Hilton Head Holiday spirit with her—an ornament from Christmas on the Harbour.
The holidays may be over, but there are still some wonderful reasons to visit Shelter Cove! Strolling the marina is one of our favorite things to do on Hilton Head Island, and with nightly entertainment, shops, and restaurants, Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina is the perfect place to shop, dine and play!
This Christmas, golfers dreaming of something more exciting than another trip over the river and through the woods will be well taken care of at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
In fact, you can simply let your favorite golfer — or non-golfer for that matter — decide exactly what they want with a Palmetto Dunes Resort Gift Card. The possibilities are endless. Along with golf rounds and lessons — same with tennis and pickleball — PD gift cards can be redeemed for resort shops merchandise, bikes, kayaks and canoe rentals, marina activities and charters, and of course delicious food at The Dunes House, Big Jim's and the golf grills. Palmetto Dunes gift cards can be purchased at pro shops, the PD welcome center or online.
For more than a half-century, vacationers from across the globe have flocked to Palmetto Dunes to enjoy the resort’s three miles of wide Atlantic Ocean beach and countless amenities, highlighted by PD’s sterling trio of world-class golf courses designed by legends of the industry. In the past decade alone, all three Palmetto Dunes courses have been honored as South Carolina’s Golf Course of the Year.
For all your Christmas shopping needs this year, Santa's helpers at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort are standing by. Call them at 866-744-7558.
“On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me.” … If you want to give your love a gift of golf this year, consider these dynamite dozen quick and easy options that can be shipped directly to your favorite golfer.
1. Personalized Bag tags spark the excitement of the memory of the Palmetto Dunes Golf experience and can awaken the anticipation of visiting there soon. Also, the “tag” identifies your “bag” so that it will be handled correctly. Personalized ball markers are also available.
2. Head covers are leather, logo-ed and long lasting protection. Every time the golfer touches their head cover, no matter where they are, it transfers quality and confidence into the next shot.
3. Golf balls for the best or particular player, e.g. Titleist Pro V1 with a sale price with college logos Clemson, Ohio State and USC Gamecocks. New golfers will enjoy the Taylor Made Project A.
4. A lesson with a nurturing PGA Professional will allow the recipient to create memories and get better at a game they love. Men and some women are known for not caring for themselves. Give them the know-how they need. Private lessons at PD include take-home video analysis, emailed notes and practice before and after. If you have questions, please call the Director of the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy, Doug Weaver, at 843-338-9598. We can e-mail a certificate to you in minutes.
5. Dress for success. Under Armour shirts, caps and shoes always make us dream of playing like Jordan Spieth, while also making us feel athletic like an NFL football player. Peter Millar Polo RLX and Nike golf clothes always make a golfer happier and make them play better.
6. US Kids Golf Club sets bring back the memories of children on Christmas Day enthusiastically choosing which golf bag compartment was for balls, which was for tees and which was for the “water ball.” This teaches them organization skills, planning ahead and it shows parents the excitement of golf to come. Call a PD Pro Shop and provide your child’s height and we can fit the clubs. Also, ask for Birdie Balls that can be hit in the yard.
7. Ricky Fowler junior hats of all color or PD logoed hats that fit all. Buy one get one half off, choosing from plenty of variety and styles.
8. Golf bags — Nike, Taylor Made and Ping have outstanding carry bags or the larger staff bags will make your golfer look like a true professional.
9. Pre-paid rounds of golf. Did you know that you could make a tee time and pre-pay it? You can also get gift a gift card for PD’s three courses that allows the golfer to make the tee time. When you purchase the gift card, just be sure to let the professional know your intent.
10. Advice from a Golf Psychologist. This affordable gift can be life changing. Most golfers have several bad shots or habits that are rooted in their personality, resulting from influences from work habits, parents, friends or other golfers who improperly mentored them. Mentalgolfworkshop.com is a professional online golf psychology service that identifies the golfer's patterns and offers a report on how to blend your personality into successful golf. The Web site offers testimonials from PGA Tour players, parents and college coaches. The service is branch of the DISC Profile System used worldwide in the Human Resources Industry. The cost is $65 and includes a free follow-up consultation with Golf Digest Magazine No. 2-ranked instructor in all of South Carolina, Doug Weaver, when you use the access word “palmetto.”
11. Time with a golf exercise trainer. Many people and golfers alike lose confidence in themselves simply because they have lost flexibility A Golf Mobility Class will increase confidence in kids and adults becoming more mobile, agile and stronger, therefore, seeing the ball go farther and straighter effortlessly. Also, the class benefits normal activity in life.
12. Frustration pills! The best medicine is fresh air and time playing on the course with a professional. Play with the pro and let them learn as they go. It’s kind of like going fishing in the local salt marshes or ocean — a guide is necessary, otherwise it is blind luck to catch a fish. Studies prove that many people quit golf or reduce their play significantly because they are frustrated, not successful or having fun. Enjoyment can be enhanced and quitting can be prevented by time with a coach, who teaches you how to enjoy the game.
Golf is a game for a lifetime. If you need any help choosing that special golf gift … or if you’re in need of golfing advice … please call 866-744-7558 and ask for the Pro Shop. We will help you find a gift that will be well received and cherished for many years.

Croissants, baguettes, and pastries, oh my! Life on Hilton Head Island just got a little bit sweeter with the new Hilton Head Social Bakery. The beautiful café and bakery located at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina is a passion project for New York chef Phillipe Feret and his partner Marissa Burnpur. Feret has worked in some of the finest restaurants in New York and had his own restaurant, Brasserie Julien, for 15 years. The talented pastry chef is bringing his Parisian roots and culinary expertise to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, and we for one cannot wait to taste his delectable desserts.
Eclairs, croissants, tarts, turnovers, European-style bread and brioche, chocolates, cakes, is your mouth watering yet? We wanted to learn more about the Hilton Head Social Bakery so we went straight to the source. Check out our interview with Executive Chef Phillipe Feret and don’t forget to check out the Hilton Head Social Bakery next time you visit Palmetto Dunes.
You’ve been open about a month now. How’s it going so far?
It’s great! Our initial concern was the customer response to introducing something new and different here, but they love it! This gives us fuel to do even better.
Your father owned a bakery in France. How does it feel to be following in his footsteps?
It’s a nice feeling and I’m sure he’s proud of me. I think about him all of the time now that I am baking again, especially when I am using his original baking tools that he gave me just before we opened. He used [them] in our bakery when I was young.
What bakery item do you enjoy making the most?
Croissants, because croissants are temperamental and are an interesting challenge. To make a great croissant everything has to [be perfect], the temperature, the environment, the timing, etc. Most of the time they are in a good mood!
The café is so beautiful! We love all of the reclaimed wood and special touches. What inspired you to create such a beautiful space?
The bakery is significant because the inside has a story to it. From the floor to the wood cabinetry, to the artifacts. My fiancée and I always wanted to have a barn house with reclaimed wood, so, for now, we combined our talents to build this in a contemporary design. She is my biggest inspiration.
Do you have a favorite dessert? Which pastry would you recommend?
All of the desserts I make are my favorite. But most of all, the apple tart and crème brulée. I would never make anything I didn’t like.
What do you love most about Hilton Head Island?
The community is very supportive and friendly [and] it’s very peaceful here. The island life is great.
Thanks to Philippe for answering our questions! If you’d like to learn more about the Hilton Head Social Bakery, check out their Facebook Page. Or visit their new website at www.hiltonheadsocialbakery.com! Bon appétit!
