Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort Celebrates Heritage Week on Hilton Head

Heritage Week around Hilton Head Island and the world-renowned Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is one of the most popular times of the year.

While PGA Tour players and fans are flocking to the island, Palmetto Dunes is enjoying a number of guest-friendly events. For starters, in celebration of Heritage Week, when you buy a dozen Chrome or Supersoft Callaway golf balls, you get a sleeve for free at the Robert Trent Jones pro shop located in Palmetto Dunes.

Former PGA Tour player and longtime Palmetto Dunes Director of Instruction Doug Weaver kicked off the week Monday afternoon with a free golf exhibition at the Robert Trent Jones Course, where participants experienced Weaver’s effective and entertaining style. Tuesday is Travis Mathew Day, meaning customers receive 20 percent off all Travis Mathew products in the Robert Trent Jones pro shop, plus a free koozie, insulated bag and Travis Mathew hat with purchase.

Next, it’s time to turn to golf equipment. On Tuesday, SwingFit instructors will conduct a “Beat Your Driver” event at the Robert Trent Jones Course, where golfers bring their driver and in 10 minutes, a Palmetto Dunes representative will beat their driver distance or consistency. If not, customers receive a $10 gift certificate to SwingFit. Wednesday afternoon from 1-4 pm will be an Edel Single Length Fitting Demonstration by SwingFit at the Robert Trent Jones Course.

SwingFit is headed by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” SwingFit’s approach includes more than 20,000 total club and shaft combinations, including Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Mizuno, Edel, Fujikura, Matrix, Aerotec Steelfiber, Nipon, KBS, TrueTemper, Accra, Paderson and others — using a data-driven process to improve performance by identifying the ideal combination of club, shaft and build specifications for each golfer.

Enjoy Heritage Week … and before you head down to the tournament or after your fun day of viewing, stop by the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and enjoy all there is to offer.

Alexander’s Restaurant: 5 Menu Items We Can’t Wait to Try

Originally opened in 1977, Alexander’s Restaurant has been mainstay of the Hilton Head Island dining scene for decades. We’re thrilled to be able to reintroduce our neighbors and guests to the new Alexander’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, a classic Hilton Head Island restaurant that we’re sure you’re going to fall in love with all over again.

We’ve completely redesigned the space overlooking Palmetto Dunes lagoon and reimagined the seafood-based menu, with the help of executive chef Don Reinheardt and Chef de Cuisine Sean Carroll, to include locally-sourced produce and seafood. The result is an elegant dining room with well-crafted dishes, creative cocktails and good old-fashioned Southern hospitality.

Whether it’s an old favorite or a new entrée, here are five dishes we can’t wait to try from Alexander’s new menu:

    Oysters Alexander’s

The oysters on the half shell at Alexander’s are a seminal favorite and we’ve also added Oysters Alexander’s to the oh-so-appealing appetizer menu. Topped with bacon, horseradish cheddar and crab, it’s a tasty start to your meal and a perfect example of the bold flavors Chef Reinheardt and his team have created.

    Palmetto Dunes Pimento Cheese

The perfect starter for your party, this cheesy dip with kick comes served with grilled flatbreads and cornichons.

    Shrimp and Grits

What would a trip to the Lowcountry be without shrimp and grits? Alexander’s makes theirs with decadent sausage gravy and fresh golden tomatoes. We locally source the grits from Geechie Boy Mill on Edisto Island, S.C. Heirloom corn is used in the antique gristmills, which preserve the natural oils and flavors of the corn resulting in the most flavorful grits. This delicious twist on a Southern classic will have you coming back to Alexander’s again and again.

    Fresh, Local Catch

Chef Reinheardt and his team are experts at seafood, and ordering their catch of the day is a brilliant way to experience their culinary creativity and taste the flavors of Hilton Head Island, including local fish such as grouper, flounder, and blue crabs.

    Alexander's Wiener Schnitzel

While Alexander's is known for its seafood, we had to include this dish from their Land & Air Entrée menu! An Alexander's tradition, the wiener schnitzel is classically prepared and served on decadent whipped potatoes with a red wine demi-glace, capers, and seasonal vegetables.

What menu item has caught your eye? Tell us in the comments! Alexander’s Restaurant & Wine Bar is open daily from 5–10 pm. To view the complete menu visit www.alexandersrestaurant.com, and for more information on all of the dining options at Palmetto Dunes visit www.palmettodunes.com/dining/hilton-head-island-dining.

Seven Myths About Golf Trips Everyone Thinks Are True

    1. Myth: You go on golf trips to get away from your family.

Fact: You don’t go on golf trips to get away from your family. And if you did, you wouldn’t dare say it out loud. No, the more diplomatic approach involves talking about bonding time with your friends, badly needed relaxation (and exercise!) on the golf course and a healthy dose of culture away from the course. And for all that … Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has got you well covered. Three award-winning golf courses designed by a trio of the game’s legends: Robert Trent Jones golf course, Arthur Hills golf course and George Fazio course. And plenty of culture including the Mediterranean-style Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina that features premium waterfront shopping and dining — everything from upscale clothing boutiques to fine art galleries, elegant restaurants and casual pubs overlooking the marina and waterfront — and is home to a wide variety of charters including nature cruises, dolphin tours, sport crabbing and fishing.

    2. Myth: On a golf trip, all you will have time for is hitting the links, eating (and drinking), and sleeping.

Fact: At Palmetto Dunes, we know this isn’t the case. Our three courses are so conveniently located and there are sooo many other things to enjoy around here. Named to the top 25 World’s Best Family Getaways by Travel + Leisure, the resort features not only a trio of world-class golf courses, but also an award-winning tennis center, an 11-mile inland salt-water lagoon system for kayaking and fishing, and Hilton Head Outfitters for bike rentals, canoes, kayaks, fishing and much more. Play More. Do More. Get More. That’s the promise Palmetto Dunes fulfills every day for thousands of vacationers, golfers, tennis players, beach lovers, groups and nature lovers.

    3. Myth: On a golf trip, the comfort of your accommodations isn’t all that important.

Fact: Wrong. With all you’re going to be doing at Palmetto Dunes, you’ll want nothing more when you hit the hay than to enjoy a comfortable, peaceful night’s sleep. For short-term and long-term accommodations, Palmetto Dunes proudly offers the island’s premier selection of vacation rental properties from oceanfront hotel rooms to spacious villas overlooking the harbour, lagoon, fairways or beach.

    4. Myth: You go on a golf trip to play golf, not get lessons.

Fact: Well, at Palmetto Dunes you can do both. Former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver has served 13 years as Palmetto Dunes’ highly respected Director of Golf Instruction. One of the resort's popular attractions is the complimentary Monday golf exhibition and clinic, where participants experience Weaver’s effective and entertaining style. The weekly event is hands on, interactive and prizes are given. Last year, his colleagues voted Weaver as Golf Digest magazine’s No. 2 Instructor in South Carolina and he was named the Hilton Head Island PGA chapter's “Teacher of the Year.” At Hilton Head Family Golf School, Weaver and his team present a holistic, keep-it-simple approach to learning golf. The resort atmosphere is service oriented, classy and relaxed. The coaching style is the same, making many students much better golfers. Private lessons at PD include take-home video analysis, emailed notes and practice before and after.

    5. Myth: People take golf trips to remote locales such as Bandon Dunes and Pinehurst because there’s nothing else to do other than play golf … and that’s the way it should be.

Fact: We happen to think that’s NOT the way it should be. Palmetto Dunes is nestled in the heart of Hilton Head Island and surrounded by most anything and everything fun you can think of to do during the day AND at night. Hilton Head Island has long been renowned as a family friendly destination. The readers of Travel + Leisure magazine agree, naming Hilton Head as 2016’s “No. 1 Island in the U.S.” in the magazine’s annual “World’s Best” survey.

    6. Myth: On a golf trip, you need to “dance with the one who brought you” … in other words, bring your own golf clubs, no matter how old and outdated they are, because they’re what you’re accustomed to playing.

Fact: Well, maybe some places, but not Palmetto Dunes. Don’t want to lug your golf clubs on your trip? The Palmetto Dunes Rental Club Program is a far cry from the worn-out, no name sets available elsewhere. Only full sets of the very latest clubs from top brands Taylor Made, Nike, and Cobra are offered to visiting golfers in need of equipment. Or, if you’ve been giving thought to a new set of sticks, Palmetto Dunes now offers the expertise of SwingFit, headed by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” SwingFit’s approach includes more than 20,000 total club and shaft combinations, including Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Mizuno, Edel, Fujikura, Matrix, Aerotec Steelfiber, Nipon, KBS, TrueTemper, Accra, Paderson and others — using a data-driven process to improve performance by identifying the ideal combination of club, shaft and build specifications for each golfer. Another important feature of the new service at Palmetto Dunes: With on-site inventory and a team of skilled builders, many clubs can be delivered within 48 hours.

    7. Myth: Golf trips are fun, but they tend to be very expensive, too.

Fact: Not necessarily. At Palmetto Dunes, the arrival of spring allows golfers to begin scheduling their next golf getaway while also saving money through the resort’s numerous, attractive golf stay-and-play packages. For guests who booked their accommodations directly through Palmetto Dunes Resort Reservations, additional packages and specials are available. In addition if you’re with your family, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate.

Not only are their harmonies and vocals impressive, their repertoire is incredibly varied. Deas-Guyz has been wowing crowds with their mix of Motown, Reggae, R&B, and popular dance hits since 2000. This six-piece band performs across South Carolina and Georgia and if you’re looking for a beat to tap your toes to, you won’t want to miss a high-energy performance by Deas-Guyz.

Target is a seasoned musical trio that rocks everything from disco classics to soulful ballads to current Top 40 hits. Helmed by the powerful vocals of lead singer Michelle, Target puts on a show that will have you dancing in the aisles and dying to sing along.

    Taste

Not only is Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina the place to be on Thursday nights for great music, our restaurants at Shelter Cove will be offering tasty treats and delicious drinks for all to enjoy.

The best part of Music & Taste is that you don't have to miss out on any of the action! Each week, our featured restaurants set up tents in the square, so you can dine and dance in the open, South Carolina air. We love seeing the special appetizers and drinks that our Shelter Cove favorites come up with for this outdoor event.

This year look for food by Bistro 17, ELA's Blue Water Grille, Bucci's Italian Cuisine, Mediterranean Harbour Bar & Grill, San Miguel's, Scott's Fish Market, and Hilton Head Social Bakery!

While you’re at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina, check out the onsite shopping, and enjoy a stroll along the marina’s boardwalk. Then dance the night away, or bring a chair to relax, while enjoying a beautiful Hilton Head sunset. We can’t think of a better way to spend a Thursday night! Best of all, Music & Taste is free!

Here are some tips to get the most out of Music & Taste:

    • The event takes place outdoors at the iconic Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and is weather permitting.

    • Arrive early, and bring a fold-up chair with you! Seating is limited.

    • While admission is free, we are collecting canned goods for Deep Well Project.

    Riding in Style

Renowned in the resort industry through the years for remaining on the cutting edge of technological innovation, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head Island has announced the arrival of two new, state-of-the-art fleets of golf carts.

Produced by Club Car, the premier name in golf carts, the new fleets at Palmetto Dunes include golf carts equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS), as well as USB ports to charge cell phones and play music devices — all designed to suit a golfer’s enjoyment and functionality.

In addition, Palmetto Dunes has added a dozen four-person golf carts that will serve a host of capabilities.

“We hope to get some foursomes out in the morning playing out of one cart, while also getting in some walking,” said longtime Palmetto Dunes Director of Golf Clark Sinclair. “In the afternoons, we can host some small corporate outings and scramble tournaments with all four players in the same golf cart. We think this will be very attractive to corporate event planners, as it allows an added sense of team and relationship building.”

Palmetto Dunes becomes one of the first golf resorts in the southeast and first in South Carolina to offer the four-person carts.

Palmetto Dunes features a trio of golf courses designed by three of the game’s most unique architects — Robert Trent Jones Sr., George Fazio and Arthur Hills — all three of which have been awarded the Palmetto State’s “Golf Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Board of Directors of the National Golf Course Owners Association.

The Jones Course was ranked No. 9 in Golfweek magazine’s 2016 rankings of the “Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina” and recently cracked Golfweek’s Top 100 of “Best Resort Courses in the United States.”

Late last year, Condé Nast Traveler named Palmetto Dunes a “Top 20 Best Resort in the South.”

Palmetto Dunes Your Way: Family Fun

There’s no doubt that Palmetto Dunes is the perfect place for a family vacation. Vacation rentals and vacation homes provide space for everyone, as well as the convenience of a cooking space, and in some cases even an on-site pool. Hilton Head Outfitters offers bike equipment in all sizes so you can be sure your little ones are cycling safely. Best of all, Palmetto Dunes offers some fun activities and beautiful outdoor spaces to explore. Don’t believe us? Check out our Family Itinerary!

There’s no better way to explore Hilton Head Island than by bike, so first stop on our Family Itinerary is Hilton Head Outfitters! Did you know that you can reserve your bike in advance and they will deliver your bike right to your rental unit? Mine was waiting for me when I arrived, ready to roll as soon as I had settled in and wanted to head out exploring. If your child is still learning to bike, rent a kid’s beach cruiser with training wheels or a tag-a-long bike attachment. Child seats and kiddie carts allow even the smallest of your brood to enjoy the ride.

To start my day with an unbeatable breakfast, I headed to The General Store. This bustling hub is an excellent starting point for a day of adventure. After fueling up on eggs, bacon and grits, I headed off to Hilton Head Outfitters for a morning of paddling and nature exploring on Palmetto Dunes’ lagoon.

The man-made lagoon at Palmetto Dunes is ideal for novice paddlers. No large boats are allowed in the lagoon, and any motorboats must be electric in order to preserve the lagoon’s pristine environment. This makes for an incredibly peaceful and calm paddle. One of the things I’ll never forget from my kayak trip was the wildlife I was able to witness up close and personal! Brave baitfish leaping out of the water. Cormorants drying their wings, egrets and heron patrolling the water’s edge, turtles sunning, even a small herd of deer enjoying some shade by the lagoon!

A morning of cycling and water sports drums up quite the appetite! For a Mexican feast fit for a family, we dined at San Miguel’s. Complete with a kid’s menu that doubles as a coloring page, this Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina restaurant is a delightful place to stop for a family meal. (And the queso dip was delicious!)

One of the most exciting items that is included in our Family Itinerary is a dolphin watching tour! I couldn’t wait to get back out onto the open water to see what other wildlife I could find. There are some excellent charters and cruises available at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina, and many of them can even be booked online! We boarded the Dolphin Seafari and set sail. This time of year you’re less likely to see as many dolphins as you can see in the height of summer, but we were fortunate enough to see a few as we traveled out of Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and into Broad Creek. The crew on Dolphin Seafari were really knowledgeable. I learned all about local shellfish and fish, and was told that in the summer months they’ll pull up local sea creatures to create an onboard aquarium for kids to enjoy! If you keep your eyes peeled, you may even catch glimpse of a mermaid sunning on a rock while cruising with Dolphin Seafari. What fun!

The winner of our Family Itinerary will receive a dining certificate so you can wrap up a busy day of family fun with some delicious eats! I headed to Big Jim’s. The convenient location, homemade Lowcountry cooking, and casual atmosphere made the perfect recipe for an easy and delightful dinner.

By now your kids might be worn out, but if not I highly recommend an evening walk—or bike ride—on the beach. As for me, I headed to my vacation rental where I relaxed while watching a DVD and went to bed in anticipation of another exciting and eventful day at Palmetto Dunes.

Palmetto Dunes Your Way: Southern Romance

by Alex Archibald, a guest blogger

Life can be so hectic in this day and age that it can be hard to find quality time to connect with your loved ones. Slowing down to a laid-back, Lowcountry pace is just the ticket to building stronger bonds and spending a romantic vacation together, enjoying each other’s company and the fun couples activities Palmetto Dunes has to offer.

I’ve seen way too many stunning sunrise photos on Instagram to miss seeing one in person, so I started the day by heading to the beach. It is worth the early morning wake up, believe me. As the sun rose and the tide shifted and the warmth of the sun began to spread across the beach, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear, nor could I stop thinking as I strolled along the white sand, “is this romantic, or what?!”. Palmetto Dunes offers three miles of beach to enjoy, so you can stroll for as long or little as you like.

After a breathtaking morning at the beach, I headed to Hilton Head Social Bakery for some breakfast. Paris is the city of love, so for a day all about romance, authentic French pastries seemed like the perfect fit! Philippe, owner and head pastry chef is a gregarious Frenchman who makes what might be the best croissant I’ve ever had. Even if you and your sweetheart are more of a ‘stay in the villa rental for breakfast in bed’ kind of couple, you should swing by Hilton Head Social Bakery at least once during your Palmetto Dunes couples vacation.

Next up on the road to romance was a visit to Hilton Head Outfitters to pick up a bicycle built for two! A tried-and-true couples activity that also happens to be an ideal way to explore the natural beauty of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. Whether you follow the bike paths along the lagoon or head back to the beach to pedal along the sand, discovering your new surroundings together is a wonderful way to make memories as a couple.

When it comes to biking, you’ve got plenty of options! Explore the resort along the many bike trails. A trip through the south gate will take you through the George Fazio course and along the lagoon. Or, head through the north gate and turn off towards the beach! A bike ride along Palmetto Beach is restorative, romantic, and just plain beautiful.

Our Romantic Itinerary includes a trip to the spa, and after a visit to the Ocean Tides Spa at Omni Resort, I must say this is an enviable part of the prize indeed! Nikki at the spa was warm and welcoming and the space is beautiful. I felt more relaxed almost as soon as I walked in the door! The facilities include a sauna, stunning treatment rooms, a manicure/pedicure lounge, and hair salon. One look at the salon and nail lounge and I knew it would be the perfect place to get ready with your bridesmaids on your wedding day!

The spa offers many services and treatments so if a couples’ massage isn’t up your alley, try the Himalayan Salt Rock Massage—the spa’s most popular treatment—or a facial.

There’s no better place to watch the sun come up than the beach at Palmetto Dunes. If a romantic sunset is what you’re after, a sunset sail out of the marina is just the ticket! Our sunset cruise departed from Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina at 5:30 p.m. and headed out towards the point. The sunset beyond the silhouette of boats moored on public buoys was breathtaking, to say the least. Having a dolphin follow us home was icing on the cake.

To finish off an impeccable evening, we went for a decadent candlelit meal at one of Shelter Cove Marina’s most romantic restaurants: ELA’s Blu Water Grille. Situated at the end of the marina, the water views are unparalleled, and the food was divine. Oysters to set the mood, an ample wine list to choose from, and, to cap off the night, something sweet from a mouth-watering offering of house-made desserts.

From sunrise to sunset, and well into the warmth of a Lowcountry night, there are opportunities for romance everywhere you turn at Palmetto Dunes and our Romance Itinerary offers you some of the best of them.

Palmetto Dunes Your Way: A Sporting Good Time!

by Alex Archibald, a guest blogger

I started the day on the Robert Trent Jones course. I’d definitely recommend an early tee time! By the time we got to the 10th hole the sun was newly risen, and the golden glow and long shadows it cast over the green was just as glorious as getting a hole in one! If possible, Hurricane Matthew has made this hole even more beautiful, as you can see clear through the greenery and palm trees to the ocean and Palmetto Beach.

A big day full of active adventure calls for a big breakfast, so naturally I headed to The General Store. My meal was hearty, homemade, and delicious. I’ll be dreaming of that biscuit for weeks to come! My only regret was not trying the cheesy grits—a menu item I’ll have to go back and try another time.

I had the chance to sit in on a Golf Exhibition with the resorts Director of Golf Instruction, Doug Weaver upon my arrival at Palmetto Dunes on Monday afternoon. The free clinic is offered every Monday at 4 p.m. and I’d highly recommend it! Doug Weaver’s knowledge of the game is impressive to say the least. But it’s his cheerful demeanor and easy teaching style that truly stand out. He has a way of making the game accessible for players of all skill levels and he takes away any intimidation you may feel about playing the game. I ran into Doug several times throughout my stay (the man is everywhere!), giving private lessons, or leading stroke of the day workshops. One woman I talked to said that Doug Weaver had changed her swing more in three days than the past 10 years of golf! When you finally master the stroke you’ve been working on, it’s hard to tell who is more excited, him, or you! No wonder he’s been inducted into the Hilton Head Island Golf Hall of Fame.

I ran into a few golfers on their golf bikes while out on the Arthur Hills course. What a great way to get around and add an added active element to your golf game! One player I talked to joked that he liked the golf bike more than the game itself.

These courses truly are beautiful. I didn’t get a chance to see George Fazio, as it was being readied for its reopening this spring, but I’ll be eager to return to check it out. I think you’ll have a hard time choosing just one course to play should you head down to Palmetto Dunes for our Sports Itinerary!

As part of our Sports Itinerary we’re offering court time at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, so I had to go check it out. Palmetto Dunes has over two dozen clay tennis courts, as well as junior-sized and pickleball courts, and the friendliest staff and tennis instructor’s you’ll ever meet! Hank’s Stroke of the Day clinic was great, and Mark’s Pickleball Clinic was a ton of fun. (If you’ve never played Pickleball before, you’ve got to try it! It’s a fun, fast-paced leisure sport that also happens to be one of the fastest-growing in America. Click here to learn more about the game.)

After lunch on the patio at Big Jim’s—feasting on shrimp n’ grits, a must-try meal when you’re in South Carolina—it was time to head to Shelter Cove Marina to try our hand at fishing. A chartered offshore fishing excursion is included in our Sports Itinerary and whether you’re an avid angler or a first-time fisherman you’ll enjoy being out on the water and enjoying the beauty of the bay at Palmetto Dunes. And, with the expert help from you’re guide, and a little luck, you might just catch a fish, too!

We headed out with Miles and John on The Phantom. We spent a delightful few hours exploring, trying different “fishing holes”, learning a ton about baiting and casting, and finally reeling in our whiting, we headed back to the marina for dinner. On our way we saw two dolphins! A mother and her baby. What a precious moment. A glimpse of dorsal fin and flick of tail were just about enough to make my day. John tells me that in the summer months when the water is warmer and the bait fish are plentiful, you can’t help but see dolphins on your excursion as there are so many in the area!

Once back on dry land, we headed to Bucci’s for dinner. Sitting on their patio during happy hour is the perfect place to regale with tales of your fishing adventures. (We won’t say a word if you add a few extra inches to the length of your catch!). I tried one of the chef’s favorites, veal marsala, and it was delicious! If you’re still stuck on seafood, try the calamari, catch of the day, or lobster ravioli. As I watched the sunset at the marina, and listen to the ocean breeze rustle the palm trees, I realized Palmetto Dunes has everything you need for an incredible active vacation.
