Summer on Hilton Head Island means one thing: HarbourFest! This weekly celebration at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina is a longstanding Lowcountry tradition, and one that Palmetto Dunes guests eagerly await each year.
This signature summer event begins in mid-June and lasts through to mid-August. The fun, family-friendly event delights kids and adults alike. If you’re planning to visit Hilton Head Island this summer, don’t miss it! Here’s a quick guide to HarbourFest’s weekly events.
The flagship HarbourFest event is the weekly fireworks display! In 2017, fireworks will be held (weather permitting) on Tuesday evenings on the following dates:
June 13th, 20th, 27th July 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th August 1st, 8th, 15th
Fireworks displays begin at dusk, but most families arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour early to enjoy live music or grab a bite to eat.
In the event that Tuesday fireworks are cancelled due to rain, they’ll be rescheduled for Wednesday (weather permitting, of course).
Live music is another great reason to check out HarbourFest! Shannon Tanner has been entertaining families at HarbourFest for 29 seasons – kids just love him! Catch him starting Memorial Day, when he plays shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Beginning Thursday, June 15, Shannon Tanner will be joined by the Oyster Reefers for a weekly island-inspired “Parrot Palooza” concert series. The shows happen every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Don’t forget to wear your dancing shoes!
Little ones love meeting Cappy the Clown, who performs at HarbourFest Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Get a feel for the HarbourFest experience by checking out this brand new video!
Beyond HarbourFest, there’s so much to do at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina! Take the family on a dolphin cruise, indulge in a little retail therapy, or dine out at one of Shelter Cove Harbour’s beloved restaurants.

Shelter Cove Marina, part of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head Island, has received the “South Carolina Clean Marina Certification.”
“We are very excited and proud of this prestigious recognition,” said Palmetto Dunes Vice President of Resort Operations Brad Marra. “We would like to acknowledge the hard work of Ron Rozelle.”
Shelter Cove Harbour is a Mediterranean-style village located mid-island at mile marker 8 across from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, offering casual waterfront dining, unique shopping, live entertainment and beautiful views of Broad Creek.
The marina is located just off the Intracoastal Waterway overlooking the wide reaches of Broad Creek, with 178 boat slips for boats up to 145 feet in length. 30/50/100 amp service, cable and water are available at every slip.
By meeting prescribed environmental performance criteria, marinas can qualify to fly the South Carolina Clean Marina flag to attract recreational and transient boaters to their facility. More than 30 states and territories operate Clean Marina programs using best management practices to protect and improve water quality at marinas.
Clean Marina programs are voluntary programs run by many states in coordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The National Marine Manufacturers Association in South Carolina administers the South Carolina Clean Marina Program.
The Clean Marina Inspection Committee conducted an onsite inspection of Shelter Cove Marina on March 28. It inspects a variety of categories such as boater education, facility management, fueling, mechanical activities, painting and fiberglass repair, and emergency planning.
In its report, the committee recognized Shelter Cove Marina for its impressive educational materials provided to boaters. The committee noted that Shelter Cove Marina management was well prepared for the inspection. All required paperwork including The Operations and Maintenance Manual, Emergency Response Plan, Contracts, Permits, Employee Training Documentation and a consolidated binder was well organized for the inspection.
It happens every day… kids and grandparents pass by the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center and shout with glee, “They got Pickleball!” while their parents, avid tennis players exclaim, “What is Pickleball!?”
So, what is Pickleball?
Some people think that it is game for “old people,” or for people “that can’t play tennis anymore.” And some avid tennis players feigningly describe it as “not a real sport!” Those that venture out to our pickleball courts to give the game a try, quickly discern that pickleball is easy-to-learn, very social, much more aerobic than they thought, and FUN, FUN, FUN. Pickleball is not a replacement for tennis, nor is it even tennis-like. It is more akin to playing ping-pong standing on the table than anything, and who in their right mind could imagine that such a game could be anything but FUN.
Why has pickleball become so popular?
The answer is simple: it is easy to learn and fun to play. This is a magical combination. Most of the people who venture onto our courts at Palmetto Dunes to take one of our beginner clinics, have only recently learned of the sport. Most have walked by our courts, seen people playing, and quickly decide they have the physical prowess and the raw skill to try the game. Our clinics last an hour and within that time most people conclude that not only can they play the sport but it is a fun, affordable, social activity, where people laugh and have a good time. Most people stay for the hour and a half round robin that follows, and by the time they finish they are well prepared to begin playing in their local community and want to learn more about how to find places to play.
Today, pickleball is being played in 5,000+ locations nationwide, up from on 750 in 2010, with most of these locations only offering pickleball indoors on a drop-in basis.
Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has started the island’s first dedicated Pickleball Center on eight outdoor courts. The Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Center has instructional pickleball programs for both the beginner and intermediate player and offers daily opportunities for players to play in round robins or drop-in’s.Come see us and join the revolution!

With its winding bike paths, miles of beachfront, and a vibrant lagoon ecosystem, Palmetto Dunes is an outdoor lover’s paradise. However, even Hilton Head Island isn’t immune to grey skies and rain clouds. Don’t let a little bit of rain ruin your vacation! There are still lots of fun things to do on a rainy day at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
Vacation in your villa
One of the best advantages of a vacation home or villa rental is you’ve got space to lounge and enjoy. Peruse your vacation rental’s DVD collection, grab a deck of cards, or use your villa’s kitchen to whip up a rainy-day feast. It’s a perfect excuse to spend time together, and there’s tons of fun to be had without having to leave your home away from home.
Dine with a view
Enjoy beautiful marina views from the great indoors while feasting on a long lunch at one of our restaurants at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. ELA’s offers an exquisite view of the harbor mouth and refined European flavors, they’ve even been featured in Bon Appetit magazine. Or head to Scott’s Fish Market for fresh seafood and a casual Lowcountry vibe. You can also enjoy and quiet lagoon view at our recently reopened Alexander's Restaurant & Wine Bar. Check out 5 menu itemas you must try here!
Work on your golf swing
At Palmetto Dunes, you’ve got the unique opportunity to improve your game without ever setting foot on the green. SwingFit is the premier custom golf club fitter on Hilton Head Island. The experts at our SwingFit facility will track your drive, measure your swing, and create a custom club—or clubs—just for you. This indoor facility is located at the Robert Trent Jones golf course, right behind Big Jim’s. We recommend making an appointment. Call 855-225-8214 today.
Catch the game
Speaking of Big Jim’s, why not watch the big game? Our favorite sports bar is always broadcasting the hottest matchups on the big screen.
Don’t forget that we also have kids’ activities (even on rainy days).
Ocean adventures in the rain
Rain may hamper your beach day plans, but we think you’ll find that the dolphins of Hilton Head don’t mind it one bit! Search availability and book a boat charter online out of Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina (most boats are covered and enclosed) and head out to see what wet wildlife you can spot! They say that rainy days make for the best fishing. It might be time to test that theory out by chartering a fishing boat.
Enjoy the cozy comforts of Hilton Head Island
If you have kids, why not take a visit to the Art Café at Coligny Beach Park, where you can enjoy a local lunch while painting souvenirs together. Or if you’re by yourself, grab a good book and head to the Hilton Head Social Bakery, owned by award-winning Manhattan chef Philippe Feret. Enjoy a perfect pastry and wait for the rain to clear.
On the other hand, you’re on vacation, so why not treat yourself? While the sky is busy raining, you can get busy relaxing. We have two spas at Palmetto Dunes, where you can indulge in a relaxing massage, soothe your sun-touched skin with a wrap or facial, or get a pedicure so your toes will be polished and ready for your next beach day.
Find some inspiration
You can also take advantage of a little bit of down time to make some more vacation plans. Relax in your villa or at a café while signing up for a Tennis Clinic or Pickleball lesson! Arrange some private golf instruction for when the sun comes out, plan your next bike route, or read up on the fish of Palmetto Dunes Lagoon. You’ll be ready to make the most of your Hilton Head trip as soon as the clouds part.

Heritage Week around Hilton Head Island and the world-renowned Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is one of the most popular times of the year.
While PGA Tour players and fans are flocking to the island, Palmetto Dunes is enjoying a number of guest-friendly events. For starters, in celebration of Heritage Week, when you buy a dozen Chrome or Supersoft Callaway golf balls, you get a sleeve for free at the Robert Trent Jones pro shop located in Palmetto Dunes.
Former PGA Tour player and longtime Palmetto Dunes Director of Instruction Doug Weaver kicked off the week Monday afternoon with a free golf exhibition at the Robert Trent Jones Course, where participants experienced Weaver’s effective and entertaining style. Tuesday is Travis Mathew Day, meaning customers receive 20 percent off all Travis Mathew products in the Robert Trent Jones pro shop, plus a free koozie, insulated bag and Travis Mathew hat with purchase.
Next, it’s time to turn to golf equipment. On Tuesday, SwingFit instructors will conduct a “Beat Your Driver” event at the Robert Trent Jones Course, where golfers bring their driver and in 10 minutes, a Palmetto Dunes representative will beat their driver distance or consistency. If not, customers receive a $10 gift certificate to SwingFit. Wednesday afternoon from 1-4 pm will be an Edel Single Length Fitting Demonstration by SwingFit at the Robert Trent Jones Course.
SwingFit is headed by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” SwingFit’s approach includes more than 20,000 total club and shaft combinations, including Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Mizuno, Edel, Fujikura, Matrix, Aerotec Steelfiber, Nipon, KBS, TrueTemper, Accra, Paderson and others — using a data-driven process to improve performance by identifying the ideal combination of club, shaft and build specifications for each golfer.
Enjoy Heritage Week … and before you head down to the tournament or after your fun day of viewing, stop by the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and enjoy all there is to offer.

Originally opened in 1977, Alexander’s Restaurant has been mainstay of the Hilton Head Island dining scene for decades. We’re thrilled to be able to reintroduce our neighbors and guests to the new Alexander’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, a classic Hilton Head Island restaurant that we’re sure you’re going to fall in love with all over again.
We’ve completely redesigned the space overlooking Palmetto Dunes lagoon and reimagined the seafood-based menu, with the help of executive chef Don Reinheardt and Chef de Cuisine Sean Carroll, to include locally-sourced produce and seafood. The result is an elegant dining room with well-crafted dishes, creative cocktails and good old-fashioned Southern hospitality.
Whether it’s an old favorite or a new entrée, here are five dishes we can’t wait to try from Alexander’s new menu:
The oysters on the half shell at Alexander’s are a seminal favorite and we’ve also added Oysters Alexander’s to the oh-so-appealing appetizer menu. Topped with bacon, horseradish cheddar and crab, it’s a tasty start to your meal and a perfect example of the bold flavors Chef Reinheardt and his team have created.
Palmetto Dunes Pimento Cheese
The perfect starter for your party, this cheesy dip with kick comes served with grilled flatbreads and cornichons.
Shrimp and Grits
What would a trip to the Lowcountry be without shrimp and grits? Alexander’s makes theirs with decadent sausage gravy and fresh golden tomatoes. We locally source the grits from Geechie Boy Mill on Edisto Island, S.C. Heirloom corn is used in the antique gristmills, which preserve the natural oils and flavors of the corn resulting in the most flavorful grits. This delicious twist on a Southern classic will have you coming back to Alexander’s again and again.
Fresh, Local Catch
Chef Reinheardt and his team are experts at seafood, and ordering their catch of the day is a brilliant way to experience their culinary creativity and taste the flavors of Hilton Head Island, including local fish such as grouper, flounder, and blue crabs.
Alexander's Wiener Schnitzel
While Alexander's is known for its seafood, we had to include this dish from their Land & Air Entrée menu! An Alexander's tradition, the wiener schnitzel is classically prepared and served on decadent whipped potatoes with a red wine demi-glace, capers, and seasonal vegetables.
What menu item has caught your eye? Tell us in the comments! Alexander’s Restaurant & Wine Bar is open daily from 5–10 pm. 1. Myth: You go on golf trips to get away from your family.
Fact: You don’t go on golf trips to get away from your family. And if you did, you wouldn’t dare say it out loud. No, the more diplomatic approach involves talking about bonding time with your friends, badly needed relaxation (and exercise!) on the golf course and a healthy dose of culture away from the course. And for all that … Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has got you well covered. Three award-winning golf courses designed by a trio of the game’s legends: Robert Trent Jones golf course, Arthur Hills golf course and George Fazio course. And plenty of culture including the Mediterranean-style Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina that features premium waterfront shopping and dining — everything from upscale clothing boutiques to fine art galleries, elegant restaurants and casual pubs overlooking the marina and waterfront — and is home to a wide variety of charters including nature cruises, dolphin tours, sport crabbing and fishing.
2. Myth: On a golf trip, all you will have time for is hitting the links, eating (and drinking), and sleeping.
Fact: At Palmetto Dunes, we know this isn’t the case. Our three courses are so conveniently located and there are sooo many other things to enjoy around here. Named to the top 25 World’s Best Family Getaways by Travel + Leisure, the resort features not only a trio of world-class golf courses, but also an award-winning tennis center, an 11-mile inland salt-water lagoon system for kayaking and fishing, and Hilton Head Outfitters for bike rentals, canoes, kayaks, fishing and much more. Play More. Do More. Get More. That’s the promise Palmetto Dunes fulfills every day for thousands of vacationers, golfers, tennis players, beach lovers, groups and nature lovers.
3. Myth: On a golf trip, the comfort of your accommodations isn’t all that important.
Fact: Wrong. With all you’re going to be doing at Palmetto Dunes, you’ll want nothing more when you hit the hay than to enjoy a comfortable, peaceful night’s sleep. For short-term and long-term accommodations, Palmetto Dunes proudly offers the island’s premier selection of vacation rental properties from oceanfront hotel rooms to spacious villas overlooking the harbour, lagoon, fairways or beach.
4. Myth: You go on a golf trip to play golf, not get lessons.
Fact: Well, at Palmetto Dunes you can do both. Former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver has served 13 years as Palmetto Dunes’ highly respected Director of Golf Instruction. One of the resort's popular attractions is the complimentary Monday golf exhibition and clinic, where participants experience Weaver’s effective and entertaining style. The weekly event is hands on, interactive and prizes are given. Last year, his colleagues voted Weaver as Golf Digest magazine’s No. 2 Instructor in South Carolina and he was named the Hilton Head Island PGA chapter's “Teacher of the Year.” At Hilton Head Family Golf School, Weaver and his team present a holistic, keep-it-simple approach to learning golf. The resort atmosphere is service oriented, classy and relaxed. The coaching style is the same, making many students much better golfers. Private lessons at PD include take-home video analysis, emailed notes and practice before and after.
5. Myth: People take golf trips to remote locales such as Bandon Dunes and Pinehurst because there’s nothing else to do other than play golf … and that’s the way it should be.
Fact: We happen to think that’s NOT the way it should be. Palmetto Dunes is nestled in the heart of Hilton Head Island and surrounded by most anything and everything fun you can think of to do during the day AND at night. Hilton Head Island has long been renowned as a family friendly destination. The readers of Travel + Leisure magazine agree, naming Hilton Head as 2016’s “No. 1 Island in the U.S.” in the magazine’s annual “World’s Best” survey.
6. Myth: On a golf trip, you need to “dance with the one who brought you” … in other words, bring your own golf clubs, no matter how old and outdated they are, because they’re what you’re accustomed to playing.
Fact: Well, maybe some places, but not Palmetto Dunes. Don’t want to lug your golf clubs on your trip? The Palmetto Dunes Rental Club Program is a far cry from the worn-out, no name sets available elsewhere. Only full sets of the very latest clubs from top brands Taylor Made, Nike, and Cobra are offered to visiting golfers in need of equipment. Or, if you’ve been giving thought to a new set of sticks, Palmetto Dunes now offers the expertise of SwingFit, headed by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” SwingFit’s approach includes more than 20,000 total club and shaft combinations, including Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade, Nike, Ping, Mizuno, Edel, Fujikura, Matrix, Aerotec Steelfiber, Nipon, KBS, TrueTemper, Accra, Paderson and others — using a data-driven process to improve performance by identifying the ideal combination of club, shaft and build specifications for each golfer. Another important feature of the new service at Palmetto Dunes: With on-site inventory and a team of skilled builders, many clubs can be delivered within 48 hours.
7. Myth: Golf trips are fun, but they tend to be very expensive, too.
Fact: Not necessarily. At Palmetto Dunes, the arrival of spring allows golfers to begin scheduling their next golf getaway while also saving money through the resort’s numerous, attractive golf stay-and-play packages. For guests who booked their accommodations directly through Palmetto Dunes Resort Reservations, additional packages and specials are available. In addition if you’re with your family, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate.
Spring has sprung in Hilton Head Island, and that means it's time for another season of Music & Taste! To help you get as excited as we are for the ninth season of this annual event, we’re giving you the lowdown on all of the action that will be happening at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina every Thursday night.
This year's Music & Taste events feature some of the most popular bands in the area, each playing in the lovely, Lowcountry air at our outdoor performance space at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina.
The Headliners is arguably one of Hilton Head Island’s most popular bands. Featuring five talented musicians on vocals, horns, keyboards, bass, guitar, and drums, The Headliners know how to get a party started and keep it going into the night. Not only are their harmonies and vocals impressive, their repertoire is incredibly varied. You could hear anything from Big Band hits, 60s funk rock, 70s disco, to 90s alternative when The Headliners are on stage.
Deas-Guyz has been wowing crowds with their mix of Motown, Reggae, R&B, and popular dance hits since 2000. This six-piece band performs across South Carolina and Georgia and if you’re looking for a beat to tap your toes to, you won’t want to miss a high-energy performance by Deas-Guyz.
Target is a seasoned musical trio that rocks everything from disco classics to soulful ballads to current Top 40 hits. Helmed by the powerful vocals of lead singer Michelle, Target puts on a show that will have you dancing in the aisles and dying to sing along.
Not only is Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina the place to be on Thursday nights for great music, our restaurants at Shelter Cove will be offering tasty treats and delicious drinks for all to enjoy.
The best part of Music & Taste is that you don't have to miss out on any of the action! Each week, our featured restaurants set up tents in the square, so you can dine and dance in the open, South Carolina air. We love seeing the special appetizers and drinks that our Shelter Cove favorites come up with for this outdoor event.
This year look for food by Bistro 17, ELA's Blue Water Grille, Bucci's Italian Cuisine, Mediterranean Harbour Bar & Grill, San Miguel's, Scott's Fish Market, and Hilton Head Social Bakery!
While you’re at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina, check out the onsite shopping, and enjoy a stroll along the marina’s boardwalk. Then dance the night away, or bring a chair to relax, while enjoying a beautiful Hilton Head sunset. We can’t think of a better way to spend a Thursday night! Best of all, Music & Taste is free!
Here are some tips to get the most out of Music & Taste:
• The event takes place outdoors at the iconic Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and is weather permitting.
• Arrive early, and bring a fold-up chair with you! Seating is limited.
• While admission is free, we are collecting canned goods for Deep Well Project.
• Music & Taste runs from 6–9 pm every Thursday night from March 30 – May 18.
So join us Thursday evenings this spring for some Southern charm, food, and fun at Music & Taste! To view schedule of events or more info go here.
