Foursome from Black Marlin Bayside Grill captures 14th annual event. This year’s shoot-out winner was the team from Southern Eagle Distributors.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (February 2018) — For the past 14 years, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront has conducted a golf tournament for the local food and beverage establishments. Needless to say, in a place such as Hilton Head — where the number of world-class restaurants is matched only by the number of world-class golf courses — the tournament has attracted plenty of excitement and interest.
“This is a local event just to say thanks to the food and beverage staffs and restaurants in our area for sending us some business,” said Samm Wolfe, longtime General Manager and Head Golf Professional at The Hills Course and Membership Director for Palmetto Dunes. “It has always been well received. They send us some business; we have a tournament for them.”
Wolfe said there is a nominal fee to play and the tournament field size has ranged from as many as 36 teams to as few as 17. This year there were 24 teams participating. All three of Palmetto Dunes’ award-winning golf courses have hosted the tournament throughout the years.
Contested this year on the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes, the 2018 event was captured by the foursome from the Black Marlin Bayside Grill, made up of Ryan Kelly, Adam Rosica, Ben Neil and Mac DeRose.
The winning and runner-up teams receive gift cards back to the resort. At the end of the tournament competition, there is a shoot-out event from about 120 yards — with the closest to the pin taking home all the money collected from the sale of mulligans.
This year’s shoot-out winner was the tournament sponsor, Southern Eagle Distributors, when their player knocked his shot 32 inches from the hole.
“Like I said, everyone seems to have a great time and we look forward to having this event each year,” Wolfe said. “We just want to show our appreciation to the food and beverage people with a local tournament.”
