HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Nearly 60,000 visitors will flock to Hilton Head Island this summer to attend the Southern summer phenomenon known as HarbourFest. The popular festival, now in its 27th year, returns to Shelter Cove Harbour with music from the beloved Shannon Tanner, weekly Tuesday night fireworks and family-friendly entertainment. HarbourFest, which was named a 2014 Top 20 Event by the Southeastern Tourism Society and a Best of Southern Fests by The South magazine, kicks off Saturday, May 23 and runs all summer through Sunday, September 6, 2015.
Shannon Tanner kicks off the event May 23 and 24 with two shows each day at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Beginning Memorial Day, May 25, Tanner will perform two shows regularly Monday-Friday at 6:30 and 8 p.m. at the pavilion at Shelter Cove Harbour. Fan-favorite Tanner is known for catchy, sing-along songs like “My Hair Had a Party Last Night” and “Flying Purple People Eater.” His entertaining, multi-generational show gets the crowd involved through energetic and animated singing and dancing. Many parents who attended his shows as children return yearly with their own families. Last summer, a soldier and father surprised his family at HarbourFest with a homecoming with the help of Tanner.
Tanner, who’s known for his trademark baseball hat with propeller, loves to write inspirational notes on kids’ beanie hats, signing a new panel every year. “We’re in the business of creating memories every night at HarbourFest for vacationing families,” says Tanner.
On Thursday evenings June 18-August 13, HarbourFest will turn into a Caribbean paradise with a special Parrot Palooza event with Shannon Tanner and his Jimmy Buffet tribute band, the Oyster Reefers. The group will perform two shows Thursdays at 6:30 and 8 p.m., playing island-inspired tunes as part of this Caribbean sunset celebration.
HarbourFest includes weekly fireworks over Broad Creek on select Tuesday evenings, as well as the largest fireworks display on the Island July 4. This year’s fireworks are scheduled for June 16, 23 and 30; July 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28; and August 4 and 11. Fireworks begin at dusk, weather permitting for the set-up and launch. Guided kayak tours and boat cruises leave from Shelter Cove Harbour for a view of the fireworks from the water.
In addition to the music and fireworks, attendees can join in family-friendly activities and entertainment at Shelter Cove Harbour during HarbourFest, like Cappy the Clown who will be in attendance Monday-Friday from 6-9 p.m. May 25-September 6, as well as face painting, bounce houses, balloon animals, arts & crafts, practice putting and a variety of interactive games and activities.
